Came in on a Wednesday evening for dinner, there was no wait to be seated. Everything came quickly - chips and salsa, drink (water), and my meal. I went with the Alambre Tapatio which is chicken with tomatoes, onions, bacon, pineapple, and cheese. It comes with a side plate of beans and rice, sour cream, pico de gallo, lettuce, and guacamole. As is often the case the amount of guacamole and pico and sour cream are somewhat sparse. The meal itself was very good! It also has some tortillas (only 3 which is never enough) to wrap it all up and shove it down your gullet. I had a couple questions about the menu in general and this dish in particular and the waiter was very helpful and informative. This was our first visit to El Rodeo Number 9 located on State Road 67. We were greeted and seated immediately in a booth. The decor is a neutral color scheme instead of the colorful decor of most Mexican restaurants. The menu offers Appetizers, Burritos, Enchiladas, Quesadillas, Fajitas, Tacos and Speciality Dinners. As soon as we sat down chips and salsa was delivered to the table. The mild salsa was good and the chips were average. Our server arrived quickly and took excellent care of us. My husband ordered a tall Dos Equis and I had a 27 oz. Texas Margarita. We love the large sizes and great drink prices. For lunch, my husband ordered the Hot and Spicy Burrito with a flour tortilla filled with chicken, beef, beans and rice, then covered with beef tips, salsa ranchero but minus the cheese and sour cream. He was disappointed with the 4 tiny beef tips toppings when it said covered and it really wasn't spicy. Perfectly fine Burrito just the description doesn't accurately describe the Burrito. I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas with 3 cheese Enchiladas topped with Pork and chili verde and served with rice and beans. The Enchiladas were good and I had a nice amount of toppings on them. The Flan was a little thick for me but I still snarfed it down. Our server was efficient, checked on us often and cleared dirty dishes quickly. Pretty okay spot for Mexican food if you want to stay in the Mooresville area! This is my 2nd time visiting this location. I ordered a sangarita and it was delicious! Although it is very sweet. For my entree, I ordered enchiladas rancheras, one of my go to meals. I will say there was a LOT of sauce on top of them, and it was supposed to come with guacamole, but didn't. The fajitas were good but the sides of lettuce, sour cream, beans, etc was so small. We ran out of sides before we ran out of the chicken and steak. The margaritas were huge and nicely mixed. My family came in about an hour before close on Dec. 23rd. The food ended up being very good, even though I wish they had chimichangas on the menu (I might have missed it but didn't see it.) They we're very obviously setting up for a employee Christmas party, however they were very welcoming and helpful, even towards the end of our meal as it was nearing closing time. We ate here on a Friday night with a group of 9 people, so getting seated right away wasn't expected. The restaurant was packed, and for good reason, the food and service was wonderful. WAIT TIME: This is the only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars. When we arrived, we were told it would be about 15-20 minute wait. Many people coming and going to dine in and pick up to-go orders. SERVICE: I can't remember our server's name, but he was great. He was patient with our large group because we to were chatty and didn't make up our minds on food right away. FOOD: Super yummy! I ordered a 32oz frozen strawberry margarita (I was thirsty and it was a long day!), and it tasted like the red section of a firecracker popsicle! My food order was a shrimp chimichanga, which was very good. Boyfriend ordered the diablo chicken, and loved it. His only gripe about it was that it was a whole piece of chicken that he had to cut up. He was expecting chicken that was cut up similar to pollo con arroz. PARKING: The lot was large with lots of spaces, so I was a little deceiving because the restaurant was so packed. Yay for carpooling! OVERALL: A good restaurant! We used to go to this El Rodeo all the time, and our recent visit reminded me why we stopped. My margarita was good, but overall it was just meh. No one finished their food (or took it home). My carne asada tacos weren't anything special, and my husband said his carnitas were bland. Our friend enjoyed his dish (a burrito), and may have finished it if the portion wasn't so huge. So I guess that's a plus. The service was spotty- we waited about 20 minutes for our drinks, and there was a strange rule about beer on the patio. Terrible? I've seen some negative reviews about this restaurant, but let me tell you what I like about it. My wife and I live close by and this has become our "go to" for nights when we don't feel like cooking and want something that we know is consistently satisfying. This is the one restaurant where I always order the same thing. I always order the tacos carne asada. It comes with 3 small soft shell taco shells wrapped around some delicious small bite pieces of beef that are seared for flavor. If you like beef flavor, then this is the meal to choose. I always request that lettuce and cheese be added (there is no extra charge for this). It also comes with small bowls of pico de galo and of a spicy sauce that adds even more flavor, but not too much heat. The meal also comes with a side of Mexican rice and refried beans. It is always enough to fill me up, especially after eating the free salsa and chips. My wife loves to eat the Chimichanga. Gets it every time. Service is always fast. Even though there isn't much interaction with the staff who mostly speak in Spanish to each other, there is enough understanding of English that we always get our order correctly and quickly. I can't speak to all the other dishes. We found something we really like the flavors of and at a price that is reasonable. And it tastes like real food, not like fast food. Food was below average. Asked for a high chair twice and never got one. No refill throughout the meal and no refill on chips when asked. Had a $62 bill and left $12 cash, which I believed to be generous given the service. I paid with my card upon checkout, so I didn't tip on my card. The employee who cashed me out was very sarcastic when I didn't tip on my card and said "thank you for your generous tip." I told her I tipped cash on the table, but she just laughed. The good: the ambiance is nice, the place is clean, and the menu is full, the salsa was pretty good. The bad: hostess was rude, the food was bland (but there was LOTS of it), the bill was much higher than expected (especially for the quality). The ugly: if your business is Mexican food, you ought to be able to turn out the basics (burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, etc) like a champ. This place failed on two of those three for our meal. We recently moved to Camby and this was the second time to try Mexican food around Indianapolis. I don't have high expectations for Mexican food here, but this restaurant should not pretend that what they serve is Mexican food. I spent a year in Beijing, China and the Mexican restaurants there serve much better Mexican food than El Rodeo. This restaurant does not even deserve one star. My family and I dine here frequently. I regularly order the fajita Cozumel which is always sizzling hot. The portion size is so generous I have never been able to finish the dish. I have dined in many Mexican restaurants in my life and this establishment ranks near the top. It is authentic Mexican food not served up like some other national restaurant chains.
