This place is terrible. The food is not "Mexican," it's supposedly "Tex-Mex," but in fact, it's neither. It's what results when poor ingredients are prepared badly in an unclean kitchen by, er, non-local persons who are not currently employed in their home country (is that a PC way of saying it?) who don't really care about what they are doing, all for owners who really don't care about anything as long as enough local redneck hicks (as they see them) and stray tourists keep the money flowing. There are now at least 3 of these now, and to be fair, we tried all 3. None were anything more than VERY weak Tex-Mex, and while the other two weren't as bad as the original(?) one in Ocean Springs, all 3 were pretty nasty. I'd eat Old El Paso canned stuff before going back. And I won't eat Old El Paso canned stuff - Id rather eat the cans than the contents. There are very few authentic Mexican restaurants on the coast, but there is now getting to be more than a few decent Tex-Mex places on the coast. Unfortunately, El Saltillo isn't either of them. Tourist Tips - if you're a tourist looking for "Mexican," i.e., "Tex-Mex" - fajitas, crispy taco and enchilada plates with refried beans and rice, etc., there really aren't a lot of good ones on the coast yet, but there are a few. Hey, you're literally on the water here - try some local seafood! If you must have "Mexican," in the Ocean Springs/Gautier/D'Iberville area, there are a few. One is Vega's in Ocean Springs - standard decent Tex--Mex, with a decent little lunch buffet. Then, there is La Fiesta Brava, at Singing River Mall in Gautier - it's clean, Anglo high-schooler types as most of the waitstaff, and good "Tex-Mex." It's the unnecessarily nervous tourist's choice (or the not-quite-sure local's choice), but it's pretty good, too. The other is El Bosque in D'Iberville, which is more of your "traditional, clean hole-in-the-wall family-owned-and-operated Mexican place." And for those actually looking for _Mexican_, there are a few northern Mexico/border region dishes available here. All the Tex-Mex is good. Skip it. Skip it, hard. Salsa was runny, chips were cold, food tasted like it came out of a can, and fruit flies dive bombed us throughout the meal. Having seen so many El Saltillos around the coast, my husband and I finally decided to try this "local institution." WOW were all the online reviews wrong. I don't know what people consider Mexican around here. First, the waitress didn't know what "mole" is--I asked if any recipes had mole--what waitress at any Mexican restaurant doesn't know what mole is? Idiot. Second, the food was horrible. Canned-tasting, too salted yet somehow flavorless. We had the enchilada burrito and the enchiladas supreme. Each enchilada was barely filled with anything, the enchilada sauce was runny, the tomatoes and lettuce were STRAIGHT from a bag, and the service was terrible despite the fact it was EMPTY at NOON. Third, we had to hunt down a busboy at the far end of the restaurant to find anyone to give us our check. Couldn't get out of that restaurant fast enough. read more

First time I went here I went with a large group for work and they forgot most of our orders and barely had waiters/ waitresses come to our tables, 2nd time was a couples weeks ago and they again like forgot we were there? So needless to say we don't go back there, now I work really close to this restaurant and in their back area it's VERY dirty, there's so many gross boxes and can lids and trash all over outside their restaurant. You could only guess that if their out side area is like this, what could their kitchen look like? Someone also told me their dishes were not clean whenever they went. & there's a lady that walks in the kitchen area with bare feet & she brings her kids to walk up to the kitchen randomly with also bare feet. Like at least once a week. Maybe someone that works there is related to her? So unsanititary anyways & disgusting. So yeah , I would not ever eat at this location again. read more

This place is not "Mexican," it's (supposedly) Tex-Mex, which is about all you'll find on the Coast, but it's not even decent Tex-Mex. Food-wise, it's somewhere between Pancho's Mexican Buffet and Taco Bell, and about as clean as the bathroom floors at either. These same bozos own several restaurants on the Coast and they are all just as bad. If they weren't on the Coast, but in say, Texas or west of Texas, they'd have been out of business in a week. There are a _few_ good "Mexican" places (really, most are Tex-Mex) spread out across the area, but this is not one of them. If you're a tourist, get some local cuisine, if you're a local, you can make better at home with cans of Old El Paso, Wal-Mart salsa, and Velveeta, and you can make 100 times better with fresh ingredients. read more

OK, this is the MS coast, so "real Mexican" needs to be considered in context. Even with that, this place is pretty weak. Every reviewer thus far, except for the first...hmmm...gives this small chain of "Mexican" restaurants a so-so at best review. I won't even go that far. I'd prefer Taco Bell for "real Mexican." And no, I don't consider Taco Bell real Mexican, but it would taste better and be a whole bunch cheaper. Will it kill you? No, probably not, but there are numerous better "Tex-Mex" places on the coast and there is at least one of them close to all of the El Saltillos. My Mother and I were traveling from Georgia to Texas and wanted a good mexican meal. So when we saw the sign that said "Authentic" Mexican restaraunt. We thought this was the place. WRONG!! This was the worst place we have ever ate in our lives. Even the salsa and chips were rancid and runny. I ordered the Taco Salad, how does a taco salad get ruined. I dont know but it was horrible too!!! I would highly recommend this place to get different cooks and different recipes. It was the worst we have ever eaten. Please save yourself and dont eat here. This place needs to be closed down!! read more
