3.5 stars. Certainly an above-average restaurant of it's type (strip mall Mexican). Food was slightly inventive and just a cut above the standard fare at this type of establishment. The queso and choriso starter is a vat of melted cheese with delicious sausage floating in it and would qualify as a tasty meal in itself. I have no complaints from my visit to El Salto, but there's nothing that sets it apart from other Mexican places. I have been eating here for almost 10 years. Definitely some good food here. If I want authentic Mexican cuisine I come here because this is as authentic as it gets around here. I'm going to be a little bit biased, in part because I loved coming to El Salto as a kid, but sadly stopped going after my aunt stopped working nearby. I came back here recently with the boyfriend. It has not changed a bit. The food is still the same great food and the service is still pretty good. I love El Salto's cheese and crave it so much sometimes. I don't exactly know what kind of cheese it is, but it is one of the best cheeses I've ever had. My personal favorite is the Enchilada platter that comes with a bean enchilada, a beef enchilada, a chicken enchilada, and a cheese enchilada. You get the best of all the different worlds and it isn't so filling that you have to be rolled out of the place. read more

As authentic of an environment that you can get in the area. The food was well priced, good portions, and tasted good compared to most Mexican places around. The horchata tasted like coconut. Close to my heart. I've been coming here LITERALLY since I could eat solids LOL. My entire family goes here, and usually this is where we go for family dinners because, well, 1 it's the only good restaurant in Brooklyn Park and 2 because it's nostalgic and I'm serious the food really is delicious. This was my third time coming to El Salto... and let's just say so much for third times the charm. Prior to this time, I've always gotten good food from El Salto. This time was very different. I ordered the #4 combination plate which is 1 enchilada, 2 tacos, and chili con queso. Maybe, I am mistaken about what enchiladas should look like, but the enchilada that i was served looked and tasted disgusting. I couldn't finish it, and then the chili con quest was beef sitting on a tostada with shredded cheese sprinkled on top. I definitely did not eat that. The only thing I ate were my two tacos, so it was basically a waste of money. I'm sorry but I will not be returning back to El Salto. read more

I enjoy this place for it's simplicity and straight fowardness. It's not the best Mexican food I've EVER tasted, but it's certainly at the top of my list for Mexican food in the area. The chips and salsa are good and complimentary. I can usually take my family here and spend under $60.00 bucks. The service here is also good. Lackluster at best. Perhaps I was just expecting more from all the enthusiastic yelps on here, but being from Texas I was very disappointed. The guacamole was like the goo you buy in the dip section of your local grocery store. How hard is it really to make fresh guac? I got a margarita, which I think tasted fine, but the rim wasn't salted, and I didn't get a choice between on-the-rocks or frozen. Apparently they only came frozen... We have tried several Mexican restaurants around the area from Federal Hill to Timonium and this is one of our favorites and lucky that its in our neighborhood. The service is fast and friendly. Worst "Mexican" Restaurant ever! We had high hopes after reading the reviews, and seeing the packed parking lot. Margarita was served in a milkshake-type glass? Ok, I still gave it a chance - and it tasted awful! Way too sweet. Tasted like all sweet and sour mix. Really El Salto? Worst margarita I have ever had. Ordered the carne asada, medium rare. It came out Well Done. I don't think she even listened to how I wanted it cooked? Awful! Horrible! I was so disapointed. I can't say enough about how bad the food was. The server was very rude and unattentive as well, to top it off. If you like good Mexican food, avoid this place at all costs! I know Baltimore is severly lacking in Mexican joints, but how this is highly rated is beyond me. Service was abismal, and choices were limiting, and quality was poor. This is my first review so please enjoy. I just got back from eating at this restaurant and our waitress was very nice and the building was pretty nice looking. The food is ok. I got the taco salad dinner and I think it tasted good, probably 3 or 4 stars. But the salsa, one of the best parts of Mexican cuisine, was just cocktail sauce, and that didn't go very well with not the greatest food. But in a positive note their nachos were very good. But overall I've had better Mexican and I've had worse. I wouldn't go there again because the food wasn't that great. read more

If im "home" and craving some Mexican cuisine but don not want to fully drive to Baltimore to go to Nacho Mamas or want to avoid the Disneyland style wait time. Ill do Some El Salto, 2 locations one in Towson and the other in Brooklyn Park. Traditional style Mexican food, soccer on all the TV's (DUH!) and some of the best waitstaff anywhere. The chips are always fresh, free and plentiful. The food is extremely cheap, but delicious. I have had many, many meals in El Salto and have really developed my Pallet here. The Waiters even put up with my wishy-washy Spanish! I forgot my Paycheck on the table after my last meal in El Salto thankfully I realized this before I traveled to far to go back, I called and made sure it was there and sure enough they had it safe and sound! thats a rare thing at most places, more so in Brooklyn Park! read more

I can't understand why this place gets so many great reviews. The guacamole is not homemade, it has that fake plastic taste, like Spread has to Butter. The Salsa taste like ketchup with hot Sauce in it. I just had to rate this place to bring the avg rating down. Just go to chipotle, spend less money, get home made salsa, and guacamole. read more

El Salto seemed to be slipping to me in both quality and quanity. the chile relleno was still top notch but most everything else seemed off. the complimentary salsa which came with the chips tasted like ketchup with jalapeno juice mixed in. the guacamole was too whipped and rather tasteless. my fajitas came piping hot but was too greasy. i had far more onions and peppers in relationship to the beef chicken and shrimp than on previous visits when i got the fajitas. Margi got a combo platter which had the before mentioned relleno, a beef taco, and a beef enchilada, she was not overly impressed. we would go back and give them another try, hopefully this was an off night read more
