Water quality? Showed up around 7:00 pm on a Tuesday and no one was there - zero customers. After sitting down, a woman took our drink order. Two of us asked for water. Before she left the table she said the water was canned (bottled?). We just wanted tap water but were told no. We asked why we couldn't have tap water and she went to the kitchen. After a few min. a man came out of the kitchen as another man entered the restaurant. The two men had a brief conversation and then the man from the kitchen began taking our order as if the previous interaction hadn't happened. The man's English seemed fine, but when we asked him if something was wrong with the water , his fluency nearly disappeared! He seemed to say the water wasn't good to drink, which prompted us to ask what water was used for washing and cooking (rice was a side with nearly every dish). The man didn't want to explain, so we left scratching our heads, but suspicious about the place. Just as an FYI: The next place we stopped was only a few minutes away. My first time at El Sombrero today. I tried three different sopes. They were all first rate! Great flavor, carefully made, fresh, really satisfying. If you haven't had a sope, it is basically a tostada but instead of a crispy flat fried tortilla on the bottom there is a thicker corn tortilla-like flat cake that is lightly pan fried. Easy to cut with a fork. The salsas that came with it were tasty. Perfect service. Clean comfy little place. Look forward to trying more stuff. read more

We are from Los Angeles and just happened upon this small restaurant because we got off the wrong light rail stop. I ordered the carne burrito and my son had the chicken quesadilla. We found both items satisfying. Most of all, however, we were impressed with the friendliness of the staff and especially with the owner (or manager) of the restaurant. We were in a semi rural area and both of our phones had no power. Our hotel shuttle driver from Windam by Wyndham abandoned us. (One told us to get off the wrong stop and refused to fetch us, and another shouted at my son and drove off as we waited for our food--which we thought was the least we could do considering the owner loaned us his telephone. Also, we were famished.) It was nearly closing time and we asked if he could drive us to our hotel. It was only six minutes away by car but would have taken us much longer on foot. A worker drove us and politely bade us farewell. Kindness prevailed in Baltimore, a city we have mixed feelings about. read more

You go mid-way back along the wall and place you order through a plexiglass panel. They will then deliver the food to your table along with plastic ware. Great, great, great place for tacos and tortas!!! When it comes to a Mexican food, I get very picky and demanding. We ordered to go, had tacos, tortas and a slice of tres leches cake. The tacos were king, did not disappoint. It came with the works (chopped onion and cilantro with a side of radish, cucumber, lime and green onion), just the way we eat it at least in Mexico city The sopes comes in a order of 3, choose your poison of meat , even though stull needs some improvements, it was a good dish and great size seving. The torta... well another amazing delicuos surprise. We got al pastor (pork marinated meat). The bread was perfect and so was everything they add to it. If you really would like to know how it's done, this is the place to try an authentic Mexican torta. Only downfall was... the tres leches, I was open to the idea to be surprised but they let me down with it. I was expecting a real delicious slice and it was only a piece of cake soaked in a mix of milk and condensed milk. Not the best pice I have tried, but will definitely come back to get some more tacos and tortas. read more

BIG MISTAKE. I've been too intimidated by everything written in Spanish outside their doors to try and make the effort to place an order here and I did one night through Grubhub since it was easier to navigate. Everything was DELICIOUS. I ate so slowly to savor this meal longer. I loved it to much, I placed another order for dinner the next week. AND I NEVER EAT OUT. I try to avoid take out as much as possible to save money, but I didn't care. My second visit, I went inside to place my order using a trifold menu at the counter and I just waited at one of the tables. I will come back here again and again! read more

After moving from California 2 years ago I can finally say I found authentic Mexican food. The tacos were flavorful. The fact it came with lime and radishes and grilled onions made my day. The quesadilla was so big and delicious that my daughter was only able to eat half of it. Definitely adding this to the must go to once a month spots. read more

The good things - The chips and salsa were tasty. So was the horchata. That's why the 2 stars. One for the chips and one for the salsa. The bad- I ordered a burrito. The chicken was warm. The rice was room temperature and the beans just came out of the fridge. I told the server that my burrito was cold. She told me that's the way it's served. At first I thought it may have been the lettuce since there was a lot of it in it. So I stuck my fork inside and got some more beans. It was cold. She told me they could put it in the microwave but that would have ruined the lettuce and avocado. I asked her if she eats cold burritos and she said yes. Maybe it's a part of Mexico I don't know about that eats their food cold. I know my family usually heats everything up. I tried to eat what I could with the tasty chips and salsa. It was my first time here ordering through Grubhub and I was very excited to try it. Being Cinco de Mayo, I expected a wait which is not what this post will be about. Upon entering the restaurant, there is a sign on the door that states "Must wear mask upon entering" which is great but apparently does not apply to their employees, specifically the ones cooking the food I was going to feed to my son, grandmother, and mother. To clarify, I was waiting for my order patiently inside the restaurant and something caught my attention...I saw someone (a woman) without a mask who was handling food and then I saw the profile of another employee(also no wearing a mask) and immediately felt weary if I even wanted to continue to wait. I didn't. I left. Whether I get a refund back is up in the air because that is the least of my concerns. Honestly, this is violating health standards so I don't recommend anyone eat here until the employees can abide by health regulations especially with what's going on with the pandemic of COVID 19. read more

The Mexican food here it top notch. It's a great "hole-in-the-wall" with plenty of options. My al pastor burrito was perfectly portioned. Unlike most Mexican restaurants which put the rice and beams on the side, El Sombrero included them inside the burrito. What an excellent choice. I cant wait to go back and try some of the other dishes. I would also point out that our server spoke limited English, so if you don't speak Spanish then you may have some difficulty when it comes to asking questions or ordering "off menu." I ordered the sopas, a trio of bland, thick corn pucks topped with iceberg lettuce, tomato, onion and the runniest refried canned beans ever. I hate to give the "I'm from San Antonio" spiel, but I am. The worst Mexican meal ever to be served in SA could ONLY be better than this one. I have to mention that the red salsa served with the app chips had a strangely fishy taste. I only had a little bit, and I'm totally concerned about my health right now... Update... I AM sick. If you have to give someone a ride to BWI, reward yourself with this place. My wife had a midday cross-country flight on a Sunday out of BWI and she was dreading having to eat at the terminal. So we randomly searched for places near the airport and El Sombrero came up and saw it had good reviews. We arrived around 11:30am on a Sunday and were the first people there. The place is very bright and clean, a TV was on but wasn't blasting noise. Our waiter came over immediately and extremely friendly. He dropped off some homemade tortilla chips with red and green salsa. In the top chips I have had. They were thick and had great bite; the salsas also were fantastic. Tons of bright flavors, with the red having an excellent kick. The menu had a lot of tempting items, but after trying their chips one item stood out for me: chilaquiles. It was still morning so we both ordered chilaquiles con huevos (you could also add meat). I got salsa verde, wife rojo. They also offer a number of fresh juices; and since my wife always copies me we both ordered mango. Food came out quickly (we were still the only ones there) and our eyes bulged. The portions were quite large; half the plated covered with a mountain of tortillas, eggs and wonderful queso blanco. Also rice and black beans. Usually black beans at a Mexican joint are an afterthought, but these were delicious. Obviously homemade with lots of cumin, and not too salty. One big problem with chilaquiles is that the tortillas don't hold up to the eggs and salsa; but my prediction was correct with these. Even with the toppings the chips held for the most part with still lots of bite even on the bottom layer. It was excellent, and the vinegary flavor of the salsa went with the cheese perfectly. Just a wonderful dish. We probably could have shared since it was so large, but before you knew it we both gobbled up our portions. Top notch chilaquiles. Don't sleep on the fresh juices either; it came in a large glass and although mixed with water it actually helped since you should dilute fruit juice since it could be too strong. This way it was definitely refreshing. I loved that I discovered this place, if I'm ever near BWI again I will make a beeline for it. I don't like to give five stars to a place I've only been to once, but I'm sure they would make the grade after my next meal. read more

They'll find a way to nickel and dime you to death. $13 fajitas don't come with sour cream or pico de Gallo. The fajita meat was unbelievably oily from being pan fried with the veggies, only 3 small tortillas provided with the order. The beef quesadilla is really good. Run away from the roach's! Ordered the chile relleno, worst thing i ever ate. So so disappointed, it wasnt even fried, such a mess. I understand that i am from AZ, New Mexico and Texas, my family is Mexican and South American ( this is important info for later) , so i do have high standards on Mexican food but what made the experience worse was the unexcusedable customer service. I kindly let the server after one bite know that it wasnt good and if i could order something else as i was expecting a classic stuffed and fried chile relleno. (What i was given was basically a flat chile in a puddle of soup.). So i ordered the chicken tortilla soup, which wasn't great , but not horrible. While eating the soup i noticed a roach crawling on the wall! The best part of my experience is the bill, which i was charged for the Chile Relleno! I asked her about it and she was Extremely rude and said that there was nothing wrong with it ,thats just how they make it, so they are still charging for it and that i didn't know what a chile relleno should taste like because i am white!!
