This is actually my third time visiting this establishment. I must say each time I have went my experience was a great one. The customer service was on point and the ambience of the restaurant was good for the type of business they have. Plenty of seating and great customer service and bar. On this trip I did a to go order for the Birria torta with everything on it. I was very excited to try it as I love Birria anything. The flavor of the meat was amazing by itself but when you add in the consommé (9.5/10) it takes the sandwich to another level. I also ordered some chips, queso, rice and beans which were all good (8/10). They did have drink specials however, I was doing a to go order so I passed this time. My daughter had the Elote and the arroz con Pollo (ACP). I sampled both, and the elote was one of the best I tasted (9/10) and the ACP was good 7/10. Overall, another great experience. Decent Mexican food for an ok price. There are many mexican options in Shelby, but I like to give everyone a try. I wasn't wowed by the meal but it was like the rating says, 3 star. The Birria tacos were one of the better options in town for sure though! Maybe it was just the day we went that it wasn't vibing for us. Dissatisfied with our service. Server did not provide a drink for one person in our party; brought me the wrong order and when I pointed out it was wrong, tried to argue with me before then putting in the correct order. I had to get my food to go because it took so long, our party had finished eating, and I needed to return to work. Be aware that you will also be charged a gratuity for a group (ours was 6), despite the lack of service we had, which shocked me given the experience I had. There was no offer to comp the incorrect meal or reduce the expense. While the food itself tastes fine, I cannot get past the service. UPDATE: The new manager spoke with me on the phone and has said he would correct the situation. I appreciate this effort and his desire to maintain a strong business. I'm hopeful this service problem will improve. UPDATE one week later: The manager promised me a reimbursement for the overcharge; I never received it, even after calling back a second time. read more

Honestly, this is an amazing Mexican restaurant. I have never been in there when I have not been the only Hispanic being served that should indicate by itself, but the food is definitely good Mexican. It's always busy but service is never slow. The menus not real extensive but everything I had has been excellent. I will be going back. That's now my go to Mexican restaurant even though there's a closer one here in town where I live. Only reason I didn't give them five stars is because it's not what I would consider upscale but then what Mexican restaurant is. These folks are amazing. read more

One of my absolute favorite places in town. The birria tacos are by far the best that I've had, and the mixed drinks are also a 10/10. One of the best restaurants I've ever been to. After living in Arizona, good Mexican food is a pretty high bar. El Sol Guerrerense has AMAZING food. Their Birria tacos are phenomenal, the chilaquiles is out of this world, the green chili enchiladas are some of the best I've ever tried, their green salsa to go with chips is spicy & flavorful, and their margaritas are absolutely delightful. Shelby is not what I'd call a Mecca of food, but this restaurant alone is worth a pilgrimage. Go here. read more

We stopped through here on our way home from the mountains and what a great stop it was. My husband was so impressed with the food and the welcoming friendly staff that he got the rest of us out of the car to join him while we waited for food. I give it a three because I enjoyed my Birria taco and my waitress was really nice. My kids had a good time. I enjoyed seeing my wife nearly throw up. However, on a serious note. The fried fish didn't have flavor. The street tacos were not good at all. Avoid the one with pork skin it's not fried... so it was kind of like being force to eat chicken skin with no crisp and soggy. It belongs in hell or in a prison. My Mexican American students recommended this restaurant to me as an authentic Mexican restaurant. It absolutely did not disappoint! We were welcomed like family by one of the owners who explained some of the dishes and brought us samples of lingua (beef tongue- extremely tasty and tender) and one of their traditional pork dishes (also tender and the perfect amount of spice). We ordered the street tacos (beef, chicken, pork) and they were served the traditional way with cilantro and onion. The tortillas were handmade and perfect. Oh my goodness this place is a must try! My boyfriend and i were craving birria tacos and they were so, so good. Probably the best i've ever tried. I ordered a sope de asada and a gordita de al pastor for my boyfriend to try out. They were both delicious and the al pastor was marinated perfectly - made me want another one just for the meat. I also had one of their Aguas Frescas- the pineapple one- and our server told us they're all natural (i think she also said they're made in house but i could have heard her wrong) but i had 2 huge glasses and another one to go i couldn't get enough!!! It was so good. I hope this place is getting the attention they deserve because everything they serve was absolutely top tier and nothing was mediocre. Reminded me of my summers in Mexico growing up and that's no joke. Even their complementary chips and salsa were amazing- the chips were crispy and not too thin and the salsa was a little chunky so flavorful and not too spicy. I'm definitely coming back here. They are a liiiiittle on the pricier side but it's so totally worth it. In my personal opinion, there's no other Mexican place around that can compare to this one for MILES. read more

3 stars for the Birria tacos which was the only good thing. we felt very unwanted in the restaurant. our server kept asking us "is that all?". we were never "checked" on or asked for another drink/refill. the side of rice and beans was almost $5 which is fine but they we're definitely put in the microwave... our bill came out to $50 & we don't think the food, & definitely not the service, was $50 quality. We stopped here on the way through Shelby and couldn't have been happier! I had the chicken verde enchiladas and my husband had the carnitas mexicanas. We loved both! Also don't be afraid to ask for hotter salsa to eat with the chips. We did and both options they brought us did NOT disappoint. We noticed on their sign they had fresh tamales that day. We enjoyed our food so much, that after a great talk with the owners, we decided to get orders of them to go for lunch the next day. Sooo good!! We're only disappointed that we live so far away. Undeniable and unpleasant sulphur like smell upon entering which I discovered was the rice which tasted as bad as it looked and smelled similar to kerosene. The food was delicious. My husband had the Hawaiian fajitas, and I had a custom variation of the taco salad. We didn't realize they had Mexican street corn or we would have ordered it. Next time! I thought the food was excellent. Most of the Mexican food in our part of NC is the same boring texmex fare. I have even had cheese enchiladas made with Velveeta at an "authentic" Mexican restaurant--full disclosure, my mother in law was from Chihuahua and nobody made better enchiladas than her, except that one place in New Mexico.... The food here was really good, the service was excellent, and the presentation was even beautiful, not just plopped on your plate. Their mole btw, was excellent. this is totally our go to restaurant for post covid19. the food here has completely helped to heal our bodies and minds after two weeks of not being able to taste, or smell food, at all!the authenticity and that goes into the preparation of this food, is immeasurable! we haven't eaten so well or felt so well since before the holiday's. from the albondigas (meatball cheese) soup, to the freshest guacamole , and the lunch we had yesterday, spicy pork braised short ribs and homemade tortillas, ........ if you have not eaten at this wonderful loving appetite pleasing, body and mind healing, post covid19 infection restaurant (i lost 12 pounds in two weeks from not eating), please make time, do yourself a huge favor...... and go today, and eat!!!!! thank you, luis and eric, and mama, for feeding us! read more

Although our adult kids like to eat here, I have never had a great experience at this restaurant, but today was the worst. We went in around 11:30 am and ordered lunch. The four individuals I was with received their food fairly quickly, I did not. Twenty minutes after my family was eating, the server was "trying to find out" what happed to my food. Finally, my meal came to the table and I asked the server to box it up to go, that we were leaving. The server did not come back with the food or the check, I had to find her to ask her for the check, and since the "to go food" had been sitting somewhere (turned out it was at the front register), I asked for that meal to be removed from the bill, that I was not taking the food, it was cold by then. We had to get into a heated discussion with the manager, finally she did what was right and removed the item from the bill after we reminded her our family eats here fairly regularly and she would want that $50 plus worth of business again in the future. read more
