Some of the best texmex I have ever eaten! And I am a native Texan, raised on texmex. We had beef enchiladas, taco, rice & beans, and a chalupa with guacamole on top. Excellent. Real white mexican cheese, not that yellow stuff - yum. The salsa was very flavorful too. My new favorite restaurant. Definitely going to be a regular place to eat, I can't wait to try everything else on the menu! We got there early - about 6:30 - 7:00 no problem being seated. There was a small wait when we left, but it is Fri night. I'd say it's worth a wait. read more

Wouldn't come here again if it were the cure to my fatal cancer. I have always found really amazing Tex mex spots in small towns but this made me question how this place is still even open. We've been 3 times in the past month. The food is hot and delicious...the service excellent. The menu is huge and includes the usual fare, but also many other items not always found in most TexMex. We love to try something different each time. The margaritas are strong & cheap....some are super sized...the small ones work for us. The chips & salsa are okay. There's never been a wait even at dinner time on weekends. Try it out. It's a great new addition to Denison dining. read more

I am a foodie this place is CHEAP and Very Good! They use cheese thats not from a CAN! Their Chili Relenos are great! Chips and salsa is very good just dont eat to many save room for the food.Service is great the bar is great te food is great the price is the GREATEST! They actually cook their food in an oven! My husband and i usually love this place !!! Food is great service is fast ! Last night tho we went in to sit at the bar to grab 2 margaritas. They have happy hour mom-Thur 3pm-9pm with $2 draft beer and $3.99 margaritas. We go sit at the bar the waitress takes our order , as we are looking At the $3.99 happy hour sign , and my husband gets 2 margaritas on the rocks . When he asks for our tab 15 mins later the waitress somehow heard "another round " and brings 2 more drinks which not a big deal we decided to sit and drink them. Then we ask for the "check" this time . The drinks have been rang up at $4.75 , so i question this bc the sign says $3.99. The waitress tells us that those are the basic margarita, the ones we got were the special . She never even gave us an option or let us know there were different types , and i told her this , granted it wasn't that much more money but it's the principle , when we ordered the drinks she said ok and grabbed the glasses never asked which type we wanted . Our tab was $20 so i put $25 down . She takes it and takes the customers tab next to me , when she hands him his check back i look at her waiting for my receipt and change . She kind of just looks at me and then says "ohhh you need change ??" She was just going to keep the $5 . I normally will tip that amount but after her not telling us about the drink types and prices and then just assuming that was her $5 , wasn't happening . Extremely disappointed. Food was a tortilla with some ground meat rolled in it and a little thin sauce on top. Taco was meat, lettuce and a little cheese...no tomato. We had to ask someone to take our order. Had to ask for silverware and napkins. Once our food arrived we were never offered more drink, chips or salsa. Salsa was watery. We had to get up and go to checkout and ask for our check when we were done. This was our first visit and will be our last. There are better Mexican restaurants in this area. read more

This was our second time at El Tapatio. While our first try was decent although service was a bit spotty the last visit was awful! I'm not sure if our waiter was new or just overwhelmed with tables but his service was, shall we say, lacking. We were seated and looking at the menus for several minutes, not an unreasonable amount of time, when he finally came to the table to take our drink order. After taking our drink order the waiter went about his business while we waited for our drinks to arrive and checked out the menu. After another 10 minutes the waiter brought our drinks to the table, telling us he'd be back in a few minutes to take our drink order. The few minutes turned to 15 minutes as he seemed to center his attention on the table behind us who were asking for to-go boxes, etc. Being the patient types we sat and waited, watching the waiter walk by us repeatedly, even setting a tray on the table next to us making us think that he'd be right back to take out order. After another 10 minutes he finally came back, apologizing for taking so long. He took our order of carne asada and Camarones Jalisco, both with double beans (refried since they seem to not be aware of Borracho or black beans at El Tapatio). After leaving with our order in hand we waited (and waited and waited) another 20 minutes untilhe came by the table and said our order was about to be ready. After another five minutes he finally brought my plate of carne asada out and sat it down. We figured he was going back to the kitchen for the shrimp dish but he walked out and checked on other tables. In the meantime, a couple who arrived after us were finishing their meals and getting ready to pay before the waiter came back by telling us that the cooks was making sure the bacon was cooked on the shrimp dish. I felt strange eating while my dining partner was foodless so I sat and allowed my plate to get cold before the waiter finally arrived with the second dish. The second dish had double rice with no beans and he forgot to bring corn tortillas. Going back to the kitchen he retrieved the corn tortillas which ended up being tough and chewy. The carne asada was fatty and chewy although flavored well and the beans were soupy and nondescript. The "jumbo shrimp" were popcorn-sized and were chewy from being overcooked. We were able to eat but the food was less than we'd hoped. After eating we waited again until we were finally able to get the check. Paying with a credit card the waiter took it after apologizing for the less than spectacular dining experience which my dining partner told him about.He offered to get the manager but we told him we didn't want to get him in trouble, only offered our complaint constructively for his benefit. He returned with the check and card and said it had been declined which was impossible.We told him to run it again which he did, bringing the card and check back and apologizing again. Long story short - if you'll be happy with slow, substandard service and serviceable but unmemorable Mexican food this is the place for you! You'll find much better in the Sherman-Denison area. read more

I eat here almost three times a week for lunch and I always enjoy it. The lunch portions are great especially for the price, the meat is seasoned well, chicken and beef, and my orders are always correct. I dine in and they keep your chips and salsa and drinks full and when I order take out It's always ready in 15 minutes. The place isn't much to look at but don't let that distract you from giving it a try! read more
