We came here for a local road trip as flying anywhere would have been a nightmare with TSA on sick out. The DayTripper show from local PBS station featured the food and location. All good. See photos of inside and food. We got small soup and two different 1/2 sandwiches which save room for their BIG cookie. Back in the early 1980s we lived nearby in Sherman TX so see Denison upgrade their downtown area is most impressive. As a vegetarian, I always get The Hippie sandwich which has avocado, baby spinach leaves and cucumber on their fresh baked bread. Awesome cafe in old downtown Denison. The decorations were beautiful and peaceful. Stopped in for breakfast after hiking around Waterloo lake and taking the cave trail. I had the avocado toast. The avocado was perfect. It was great but If I ordered it again I would try to get it with an egg to add protein. My son had a turkey sandwich that he wolfed down. As we we re leaving they were taking the chocolate chip walnut cookies off of the baking pan. I couldn't resist the ooey gooey cookie. They were pricey at $12 for 2 cookies but they are giant sized. On the outside, this is the perfect addition to Denison's ever-growing Main Street. And on the inside, this beautiful, quaint cafe has a lot of potential. It reminds me of a spot on McKinney's eclectic town square. However, I just don't think Denison is ready for the inflated prices on Cafe Blackbird's menu. And maybe I'm wrong... as the line was almost out the door when we arrived. My half sandwich/cup of soup and small half slice of orange was not worth the $9.50. The bread was a nice artisan bread (which I'd return to buy a loaf of for morning toast), but the chicken salad and tomato basil soup were just okay. I didn't get to eat the orange as my plate was whisked away while I was pretty much finishing up. I felt rushed and not very welcome the entire time. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, though; this could be because they've been busy with their grand opening and staff training. Also, the cookie I ordered was forgotten when my food was delivered to the table, and when I went to inquire about it, I was told they were baking more and that it would be about 12 minutes until they were ready. At $3.75 a piece, you know I was waiting for this cookie. Fast forward about 30 minutes and (feeling like a complete B) I had to ask again. Not sure when/if I'll return. Employees (and most patrons) weren't wearing masks and six-feet distances were not being enforced. The visit as a whole just didn't feel comfortable. I wish them well, though. Denison needs growth, especially on Main, and businesses such as this will definitely help. read more

Blackbird is the kind of spot that makes me happy to call this town my home. There is clearly so much love and care put into to every aspect from the interior design and seating to the food and coffee. I've been into the cafe a handful of times since moving back and I'm always greeted like I'm their favorite customer. The last time I was in I had the iced caramel latte and the breakfast sandwich. Both were excellent. The avocado on the sandwich was so fresh and flavorful and the bacon was cooked to perfection. Almost no one gets bacon right, it's either so chewy the entire piece falls off in one bite, or it's so over cooked it's hard enough to chip a tooth on. Getting to take my breakfast on their quaint little patio always makes me feel like I'm in some boutique town in Colorado or Utah, not little ol'Denison Texas. My quest to find really good restaurants in the Sherman/Denison area was, unfortunately, made to believe to be an easy task. Why? Because when I first started looking in this area, it was easy to become enamored with the historic Downtown area. It's gorgeous and filled with interesting places. That was why the appeal of Cafe Blackbird was so instant. It's local. It's classy. It's modern. It's consistent. And it's smack dab in the middle of historic downtown Denison. On top of that, it's insanely delicious. The soup, the sandwiches, the insanely good desserts. Amazing!! It's got to be eaten to be understood as such. I've tried multiple sandwiches, but the turkey and avocado sandwich on scrumptious sourdough bread is ridiculously good, especially with the perfect tomato soup. Consuming them in the industrially attractive all-brick restaurant makes for a very pleasant experience. I even love the piped in music. The owner is talented and classy too (not to mention beautiful). It's truly a family affair with her daughter working there as well most of the time. The food is of the highest quality and extremely consistent. I could literally eat there every day, but generally only am able to make it on Saturdays. They've recently begun operating in the evening sometimes too, which has already extended my patronage. I hope they stick around. While traveling through I decided to pop in for an early lunch. I had walked by here about a year earlier And could tell that they did an amazing job transforming the building. As I walked in I was greeted by a warm smile and friendly face. I ordered an ice tea and chicken sandwich. The ice tea was stellar. Perfectly brewed with floral notes. Seriously might have been might favorite glass of ice tea...ever. The sandwich was good. You could tell the brea was fresh key make and had the right texture. Let me just start with saying, this place is beautiful. There is so much potential for excellence, and it could go really far! That said, their portion sizes are not up to par with the pricing for this market. The biscuit and gravy only came with enough gravy for one biscuit even though we ordered two portions. The tiny sausage cup was also only one patty and not enough for two biscuits. In my experience so far, their espresso drinks are vastly inconsistent. Some days they are good, and some days, they leave something to be desired. We have been to Café Blackbird a couple times. I have tried the chicken salad which is very good. I absolutely love the atmosphere and the patio is great for sitting and chatting on a pretty day. Today we went for breakfast and I enjoyed a quiche. Husband had a couple small breakfast burritos. We both liked our meals. I especially loved the toast with butter and jelly which I didn't expect, but really hit the spot and went well with the quiche. Beautiful space where I immediately felt cozy. Order at the counter and they'll bring it out to you. I had the 1/2 combo and I chose the adult grilled cheese (cheese, Anaheim pepper, pears, and bacon) and Greek salad. They were both soooo good! My son went healthy and ordered the berry lemon cake (he's 5 so that's healthy in his mind) and he ate every bite of it. I also ordered the creme brûlée and holy smokes was it good. I've wanted to support this local family-owned and operated cafe and today I finally had the opportunity. A beautifully quaint ambiance welcomes you. The lunch menu was exactly what I was hoping for. Out of the tasty choices I finally decided on the 1/2 sandwich & 1/2 salad combo. I ordered at the counter and they brought the freshly made Turkey "Cranwich" and the delightful strawberry & spinach salad with homemade strawberry vinaigrette to my table. The half sandwich was delicious with smoked turkey, blue cheese crumbles and a cranberry-apricot chutney. The flavors of all three were a perfect combination. The salad was perfection (see picture) but I could have used a bit more salad dressing. I wanted to order all the desserts on display because they looked sooo good. But I was being good. I live in Dallas and frequently visit friends in the Sherman area. I saw Cafe Blackbird when I was driving through Denison several months ago and finally got to try it this weekend! It is a very cute café on the inside and out, a very nice cozy atmosphere. My friend and I had the same thing, the Hippie veggie sandwich with turkey added, some chips and a glass of iced tea. The sandwich was very good and on toasted sourdough bread. It was a very large sandwich and we both ate only half and took the other half home for later! A person could definitely split the sandwich and be just fine. We also purchased a slice of chocolate cake, a slice of toffee cake, three pieces of buttermilk pie and a loaf of the pumpkin bread, to go. ( don't judge) My mother makes buttermilk pie so I wanted to try this out on other family members and I hate to say this, but their buttermilk pie was better than my moms! The hint of lemon really set it apart, a bit like a lemon chess pie. Chocolate cake , And the toffee cake we're also very delicious! Light and fluffy and not overloaded on icing. And this morning we all had a piece of the pumpkin bread with our morning coffee, it was also very good and moist. Everyone approved! Next time I am in the Denison area, I will definitely stop in and try out the other menu items. And some coffee, too! read more
