We recently moved to the area from CA and were looking for a legit taco spot. No hate on Tex Mex, but it's a totally different thing. Anyway, I found this spot on Yelp, and I'm SO glad! It's a grocery with a taqueria inside. We tried it after church on Sunday, and the place was jumpin'! The food was amazing! We couldn't stop talking about it. My son had the leftovers for dinner, and he said they were the best leftovers he's ever had. The seating was very basic, but that was fine with us. La comida esta rica pero la atención al cliente es de lo mas pésimo de parte de las cajeras y los de la taqueria. Hoy fui a comprarles desayunos a mis hijos y antes de que pudiera terminar mi orden se fue y cuando regreso para pedirle mas se empezó a comportar prepotente y a burlarse de mi. Cuando me entregaron mi comida ni siquiera era mi orden! Le dije a la cajera que no me habían atendido bien queriendo reportar el incidente y me respondió con "que quiere que haga quiere o no su comida" no les compré absolutamente nada. No entiendo si no les gusta su trabajo porque están ahi. Esta gente piensa que sigue en su aldea incivilizada, que vergüenza y que mal dejan a los dueños. Awesome local taqueria located inside of a small grocery market. For non-locals here's how its done. Go to the food counter and order your food. I recommend the tacos lengua (beef tongue) and barbacoa tacos with onions and cilantro and the tamales were great too. Once you order wait to pick up your food. If your dinning in go ahead sit down and eat, when your done go back up to the counter and pick up a sticky note with your order on it. You can pay at the register in the store front where you buy groceries. read more

Our go to for fresh produce and great Mexican fare. The meat market has excellent marinated and unseasoned meats, chicken, pork, and beef. There is a cooler with fresh tortillas and you can order tamales too. They're on the hot food line. Whether you're eating in or carrying out food, they have a process. A basic knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not necessary, and don't be scared if you don't speak Spanish. Just point, ask, and the friendly staff will take care of you. Lingua, pastor, carnitas, barbacoa, picadillo, and chicharon are all excellent. Wednesday special is the chili relleno plate. You can add your choice of meat, and plate comes with rice and beans. Grab a Mexican Coke or Jarritos from the cooler to enjoy with your meal. They will give you a chit at the end of the line with what you ordered and you pay the cashier on the way out. The drinks are on the honor system, so don't forget to tell them what you had, they know. You get your salsa, cilantro, onion, and limes at the end too, just ask if you don't get them. Tell them, "Con todo" to get you hooked up "with everything" you need to enjoy your excellent Mexican meal. We're lucky to have this place that represents the Mexican community so well. read more

I've lived the last 32 years of my life in Southern California - San Diego and LA - so I'm familiar with a good taco. I'm also married to a Mexican, so we cook and eat a fair amount of authentic Mexican food in our home. I offer that information as a point of reference when I say the tacos at El Tapatio are very good, but not the best. We haven't lived here long enough to make the claim "THESE ARE THE BEST TACOS IN THE DFW!" but this far north of the border, I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. Everyone will like these tacos - they're good tacos - but I think the reviewers who assert there's nothing better do so from lack of exposure. Four star tacos. Now, the tamales. WOW. I'm not a tamale person myself. I eat them the few times a year they're served on holidays or family parties but it's never been a favorite for me. I rather have ham or a nice roast on Christmas, personally. But WOAH, El Tapatio's pork tamales were good. More meat than a typical tamale and not dry at all. I was honestly a little taken aback by how much I liked it! Five stars tamales. The beans were not great. Three star beans. Barely three stars. Prices are very reasonable. We got 14 tacos, 4 tamales, a large side of beans (32oz?), and a large horchata for $39.14. Not bad!! Looked like a great place to buy meat for grilling - we'll be back for that. $1.69 each for carnitas, pork or chicken tacos and $1.25 for tamales. I thought my tacos were great, I preferred the beef over the chicken, but I enjoyed everything I ate. The meats were grilled with onions and peppers, and served with raw onions, cilantro and limes. The red and green salsas that came with the tacos were so flavorful and enhanced the tacos overall. Liked that this place is a one stop shop for all my grocery needs. It's a very small store, but well stocked and has fresh produce, fresh made tortillas, a variety of raw meats and Mexican favorites like pan dulce and Mexican candies. El Tapatio is a not so secret gem for us gringos. This place has all of the fresh meats to grill or cook inside the kitchen. The vegetables seem to last longer than what you get at the regular grocery stores and the little restaurant inside has a lot to choose from. We do the taco plate at least once a week and never not satisfied! Want to cook fajitas for the family reunion, you can feed a lot of people for a lot less by buying here and it's already marinated and ready for the grill. I have tried my fair share of tacos both in Mexico and Southern and Northern California and the tacos from El tapatio are the closest thing to the tacos back home. The burritos were okay. I personally would not order them again (who puts lettuce in their burritos? Other than Taco Bell? lol). Tamales were good and so was the Chile de árbol salsa. read more

What a great find. Off the beaten path, this market has quite the variety of Mexican grocery products at very fair prices. I only gave a quick browse because I was more interested in the small side cafe that is located at one far end of the grocery. Nestled behind several scattered tables & chairs is a "deli counter" that serves AWESOME Mexican "soul food". What I mean by this is, all traditional dishes are available and prepared on-site with love for the recipes. Street tacos of all varieties, tamales, burros, beans, rice... it's all there. It's like a home cooked meal that you nana made. And wow are the prices super reasonable. I ordered the carne asada and carnitas tacos along with a couple pork tamales. OMG. Everything was absolutely delicious. The tacos were moist, flavorful and a good size. Covered in cojita cheese, minced white onion and cilantro- a true street taco. The house made tamales were equally amazing- tender, tasty and the perfect masa mix, so good! I would absolutely 100% recommend stopping in. It's a simple, honest store full of hard-working people with an absolute GEM of a Mexican restaurant inside. Make sure to walk the aisles to see if anything in the grocery side peaks your interest. I tried this place out yesterday! I ordered steak (I wanted chicken but the had sold out of it) the steak was delicious! It had a great flavor almost like fajita style with the grilled peppers and onions. The tortilla was soft and the sauce complimented the flavor very well! My go to place for pre-marinated fajita meat. Anytime we are going to throw a party I go pick up 5-10 lbs of fajita meat to have ready and cut down on my preep time. Unfortunately, we really didn't find anything to get excited about in regards to the meat- but what we did find inside got us super psyched- the little "restaraunt" inside! With tacos! Real tacos!
