For being in a small town, you could not find better Mexican food any place. We had chicken fajitas with all the fixing, and it was great.

This is a fantastic local restaurant with a wonderful menu. Plenty of tasty options. If you like spicy, be sure to ask for their hot chili. Otherwise, you'll be served the standard tomato based non-spicy salsa. Great flavors come out of their kitchen, accompanied by fast & friendly service. Highly recommend El Tapatio. read more

Impressive, above average, for a small town OkieMex restaurant. El Tapatio appears to be a member of the El Tapatio restaurant cartel/syndicate, with restaurants in small towns, scattered across Oklahoma. Sometimes it is necessary to ask the readers to not be too judgmental and try to overlook the appearance (inside or outside) of small restaurants in order to enjoy the great food. In this case I have to ask the readers to overlook the appearance of the town, Nowata. It is one of those little Oklahoma towns that would improve tourism drastically, if it had a by-pass built around it. If you will tolerate the town's rough charm you will find some mouthwatering food. El Tapatio! When we arrived, the staff was hustling; cleaning the restaurant from the top of the icemaker to far dark corners under the booths. Mops and rags were in motion. I like what I see. The place is spotless, attractive, and maintained. Nice clean restrooms, with modern upgrades. A hand dryer with ultraviolet sanitization. Very unusual for a small town establishment. The salsas were superb. Prompt service by the owner. The menu is enormous. We are off to a good start. I had the Beef Steak Tampiqueña; a ribeye steak with fresh vegetables on the side. Very different, fresh vegetables instead of grilled. The beans and rice perfectly seasoned. Back to the steak. This was not a USDA Grade No. 1 cut of beef. It was delicious though. It was just under a half inch thick. Cooked perfectly. Excellent chargrilled sear on both sides yet medium rare on the inside. Someone in the kitchen is a steak master. Cooking a thin steak that perfectly takes talent. The flavor of the steak with the fresh vegetables and salsa was fabulous. My wife went with a perfect plate of Enchiladas Verde. Another example of El Tapatio's fine food. Same superb beans and rice with three perfectly spiced, juicy, pulled chicken filled enchiladas, covered in flavorful green salsa. A winner. If you are passing through on Hwy 60 or 169 and have the hankering for good Mexican food, El Tapatio is a fine little restaurant. My family went here for dinner after we went and visited the bowling ball yard art just down the road in Nowata. This is a cute place, and I love the imagination of the decor here. Bright colors and we'll painted carvings and scenes. Truly reminiscent of Mexican designs. The service here was fairly good, but there were some waiters/waitresses who were constantly busy, and some who were kind of just hanging around not doing much. Our waiter was nice, and fairly attentive. It didn't take that long to get my food, but only half of our food arrived at the same time, so while I had my meal, my brother didn't have his, and my mother only had half of hers, which wasn't explained to her before he left to get the second half, so she ended up thinking she had the wrong dish for a good five minutes, which was a very unhappy 5 minutes. When we finally did all get our meals, they were pretty good. This is where me and my mother disagree though. My mother views the food as one of the best Mexican places she's eaten at. For me, I'd say, Speedy's in Glenpool beats them hands down, no contest. In my opinion, the food is okay. Mine (Pollo Fajita) had a bit too much sauce. Not enough chicken, and way, way too much beans, rice, misc sides in comparison. Also no sour cream for whatever reason. The meal was still more than enough to feed me though, so no complaints on portion size. The pay process reminds me a lot of Speedy's too with going up to the counter, but the difference being that Speedy's also does some bills with the wait staff, versus at this restaurant where all bills go through the counter. In our situation where we wanted to each pay for our own, and then another family wanted to leave at the same time, it created a bit of a line. So an update in their billing system might be in order. All in all, I'm fairly pleased with the experience, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there again. read more

Amazing food, affordable, clean and pretty locale and very friendly staff! I enjoyed the steak dish I got, it was recommended by the waiter. It reminded me of a steak for fajitas but covered with amazing white melted cheese sauce and caramelized onion... Excellent! My boyfriend had the fish tacos. They were good too. It's pretty good food. They put in a drive-thru during covid and have kept that, so that's very convenient. The staff is friendly. The seafood chimichanga is delicious. However, fajitas are a miss there, so just avoid those. They're just very watery for some reason and the beef is rubbery. If they change that one thing they'll be just about perfect. My family enjoys ordering from them and taking it home, but if you eat in they usually have some type of margarita on special. read more

Salsa and chips-- chips warm and salsa with the right amount of heat and cilantro Lunch specials were very good value with huge portions Chicken fajitas rivaled our favorite restaurant in Wichita Falls Tx and that's saying a lot! Flavorful, plentiful and would definitely order again Beef chimichanga had the lightest flakiest flour tortilla I've ever had on a chimichanga. Cheese sauce was thin and didn't overpower the flavor or spread around the plate like so many other places. Sides of pico de gallo, guacamole, salad, rice and beans all very satisfying. I used to like this place. The first time we went there my wife and I loved it and said we couldn't wait to return. The next time we went it was nowhere near as good as the first time but we figured it was because they were busy since it was Cinco de Mayo. Well, we returned yesterday afternoon to try it again, and after this time we will not be returning. First of all, let me mention that whenever I go to any Mexican restaurant I always ask for their hotter salsa because I don't like mild. This was no different. By the end of the meal I was still waiting for the hotter salsa. To his credit, the server came and apologized for not ever getting it to me because he was busy and hadn't had a chance, and I respect that. However, considering that I asked for the hotter salsa no less than SIX TIMES (possibly seven) during my visit and made the request of THREE different employees and still never got it, his apology only covers his own mistake. Second, the manager/owner needs to know that the blatant false advertising in their menu is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I ordered a dinner and specified to the server that I cannot eat pork and asked for a substitution which he said was not a problem. A few minutes later, however, he came back and informed me that all of their beans were made with pork and wanted to know if I wanted them to substitute extra rice in place of the beans. Now there's nothing legally wrong with a restaurant using pork/lard to make their retried beans. Lots of Mexican restaurants still do that. However, when the menu has a section specifically listed as vegetarian and those items contain beans, then legally speaking those beans cannot be made with pork/lard because then they are not vegetarian. Every single person who's ever eaten at this restaurant and ordered from the vegetarian section of the menu and gotten beans would have the legal right to sue the restaurant for false advertising at the very least since their meal was advertised as being vegetarian when it was not. Either change the menu or change the beans because you cannot legally have it both ways. read more
