El Tequila is my go to Mexican restaurant in southern Minnesota! I have been a fan for many years and to many reasons. #1 their salsa is absolutely positively the best!!!! Their staff is also incredible. If you are looking for affordable and delicious Mexican food in the town of Owatonna, new Prague or faribault this is the place. Their newest move in Owatonna to a larger space is awesome, too! Super cute decorations and I know a few people that do volleyball their on weeknights in the summer! Well Arrived On 6/25 at 5pm Beautiful decor very inviting.... Only 1 table that was there so nice it wasn't to busy. Cant remember her name she was a heavier white gal she never introduced herself seemed she was in a hurry must of been training in a young white skinny gal. Never stopped n asked if I needed another refill. Asked her for specials I guess they had none. She never gave any suggestions either. I still left a $10 tip I hope she shares w the young gal w her. I had Super Nachos(soggy n greasy) Nxt time i will order more tomatoes n lettuce kinda skimpy my son had chimichangas. The white Queso dip was good she put on the side. Unfortunately will not be going back to El tequila any time soon.... Not only do that add an automatic service fee but a credit card fee on top of that... I would normally blow that off but what I order led queso to go it's 5.99 for the queso AND 5.99 for the chips?!? Are you kidding?? So if I order your queso from DoorDash for 6.88 would there be no chips?? I feel gouged. I'm always a little disappointed when I see someone say they were surprised to find decent Mexican food in the Midwest. Who do they think own and operate these restaurants? Kind old Swedish couples? OK now the review .. I've eaten here many times and I've never been disappointed, but to be honest I haven't explored the menu very much. Once I tried their pork burritos I was hooked. For me, ordering anything else would be a missed opportunity to have them.The meat is tender and delicious and their salsa verde is the perfect accent. The rice and beans are as you'd expect. The complimentary chips are nothing special, but the salsa served with them is wonderful. It's located in a strip mall. The interior is dark but bright murals line the north and south walls. This restaurant is so underrated! After moving to N.C. Three years ago I have yet to find a Mexican restaurant that compares. Every year on our visit we stop to pick up this AMAZING salsa to take home (if it even lasts the drive). My picky toddler finishes her plate every time and even drinks the salsa! For years El Tequila Owatonna was my favorite Mex. place to eat. I have not been going out for a while and was happy to go there last night. We were greeted by a very personable, friendly wait staff that I have come to take for granted. Unfortunately, the food just didn't have the freshness I was used to. I had a pork tostada and it looked like a pork stew on a soggy flour tortilla. There was a glob of sour cream and guacamole piled on top. It was on a small plate. Where was the lettuce? The crunchy vegetables? My husband ordered the chili Verdi, and it looked like chow-mein. What happened El Teqila??!! read more

Knowing that I had to go to Owatonna yesterday I was also looking forward to eating at El Tequila after having been there many enjoyable times. Found their new location which is nice. The hostess told us it would be a 10 minute wait. No problem. We didn't feel like sitting in the waiting area but she kept insisting that we sit. 'No, thank you!' We get to our booth finally to find many booths open. We place an order for our drinks. We wait and wait, watching others who had been seated after us getting their drinks. We placed our food order before getting our drinks. I went to the bar to see if our drinks were sitting there melting. They weren't. The hostess was there asking why I was there. I told her and she insisted that I had only been seated 5 minutes before then. Not true. Even if I had been wrong, and I wasn't, a better response was to get our drinks there soon. After I flagged our waitress, who was working hard, she brought our drinks. Then the food arrived. The food was great but the rice and beans hinted of being the top layer of burnt rice and beans at the bottom of the pan. I didn't even want to go there. We told our waitress that the hostess was very rude and she said she was the owner. I had never seen her at the old location, only her husband, who is very nice. I am completely flabbergasted by these other reviews. I can say that, without a doubt, this is one of the best restaurants in Southern Minnesota. I have never had anything but amazing food and service. The chips and salsa they have there are perfect every time. I have managed multiple restaurants, and lived in many towns and yet I always compare any Mexican food I taste to that of El Tequila and nothing comes close. I was driving through town and feeling hungry. I spotted this place and man am I glad I did. The food is fantastic! Seriously, I don't think you can find better tasting Mexican food. The chips and salsa were superb. Correct amount of heat and flavor. The chips were crunchy perfection. The food was hot and plentiful. This place is straight garbage if your looking for something authentic. I read the reviews and figured I'd give it a shot... Bad idea. Their "Famous Margaritas", were the start to a bad experience. They were very watered down and over priced. Next was an appetizer, the ceviche. This was the next mistake. Not fresh at all and again overpriced. Then I ordered the Diabla shrimp, also a mistake. They were cooked in a tomato sauce that tasted like hunts sauce. If you want authentic Mexican,food in the area save the trouble and just go to Don Juans across town. When I opened the menu, I was pleasantly surprised... It appeared to have a good variety of selections including authentic and americanized options. Looking for a more authentic taste, I ordered the ceviche and a "famous" margarita. I have no idea how this margarita obtained it's "famous" status and the ceviche was the worst I have ever had. It would have helped if it wasn't served on a bed of the same pico (not freshly made) which appeared on each of my friends' plates. We just left the Owatonna location. My nephew ordered the chicken enchilada by mistake as he meant to order the ground beef one. When the food arrived, we promptly notified the server of the error. He took the chicken one back in the kitchen and brought a ground beef one to the table. When I got the bill, I noticed I was charged for both enchiladas. I said I thought he forgot to take the chicken one off, he said. "No." I was shocked. What kind of customer service is that? Horrible.
