Ordered a Chile relleno expecting a full Chile but there was barely any Chile that I could see . Had dinner here tonight, but was actually craving another local restaurant. Was very busy dinner crowd--every table was full w/ more waiting to be seated. Our service was okay--forgot a drink order for most of the dinner and got a different dinner plate than what I originally ordered, but they were extremely busy and possibly understaffed, but it won't stop me from dining here in the future. Our favorite Mexican restaurant in Jackson. Great food. Great chips & salsa. Separate bar where you can have dinner away from the main dining room. Adolfo (a member of the family that owns the place) may be the best Mexican restaurant bartender in the world. He seems to be able to anticipate what you want as you are thinking it. I love the chips and Salsa but I'm used to better service. We went in to order are food to go because we had to get back to two babys and they said it would be 15 to 20 mintues and I admit it took us a little longer to order because they have alot to choose from but when we place our order before the couple that comes in before us and they get there first isn't normal the even had a larger order then us then it take 35 mintues to get us the food and it was super cold. I don't like cold food epically when we're paying almost 35 dollars. . We've been a couple times but sadly won't go back because of the service we recived. They have okay food but definitely overpriced for what you get and they like to overcharge you too. They will charge you for a single Al a carte item with no rice or beans as almost same price as a combo meal with two items rice and beans and the menu and waiters are not clear in what they offer. When I 1st visit a Mexican Restaurant I start the reviewing by observing the crowd. We arrived at 11:56 and there was only one table occupied. I was a bit concerned that by noon it was empty. We were seated and soon the chips and salsa arrived, we each ordered a cold draft beer. The waitress came back and said our drinks were coming from the bar soon. We placed our orders. We each ordered our favorite, Huevos Rancheros. When I try out a New Mexican place I always order the same meal so I can compare them to all the other Mexican restaurants. I will say the chips and salsa were very good. They have a flour tortilla chip as an alternative to regular corn chips. They were very unique. As a few diners arrived they were seated by an 8 year old child. What is that about? Where in California is an 8 year old allowed to work? He was serving chips and salsa to diners. This is the second Mexican restaurant that I have seen a child working in. Where are the FDA Inspectors when you need one? Back to the food, it did not have any flavor or spice at all. It was typical refries and Spanish rice along with the Huevos Rancheros. I do not like when a restaurant brings out steaming hot plates of food and the beans have a skin and the main course has a skin from either a microwave or a salamander. This means the food is not freshly made and it was evident in our meals. We eat this particular meal everywhere we go and this was not worth eating, neither of us finished our tasteless meal. read more

This has become a favorite, casual place to go at the last minute - especially on Thursday nights. I'd love to say its because they have the best Mexican food ever. This was my second meal at the establishment and my last. I've gone to this place on my way to the local casino. Casinos are noted for having crappy food but in this case the casino would have been a better choice. I don't remember much about my first visit other than to say it must not have been bad, hence my second trip. This time was horrid. Bland , less than "Taco Bell" quality. My partner ordered beef taco and enchilada combo plate. I ordered the "Steak Ranchero". After about 25 minutes our food came. The combo plate was chicken. They kindly took the plate away and in less than 2 minutes had the "beef" combo at our table. Clearly the plate had been microwaved as it had that rubberized coating on the top. The beef was shredded though the menu did not indicate that as it did on the other beef choices. Their comment was " we don't offer ground beef". What? That wasn't the question. We were expecting anything but shredded or ground. Cubed maybe? Strip steak? My plate was maybe a half dozen pieces of cubed beef in a bowl of hot red sauce with onions and peppers. A small scoop of rice and beans. $9 for that. I will eat the casino food over this place during my next visit to Jackson. read more

Have been eating at this restaurant for 15 years, and just ate there for the last time. Hadn't been in for almost 4 months, I had been traveling, and, when I went in they didn't even ask where I had been. In-fact they were almost , unfriendly. It is safe to assume that anywhere near a German speaking country, there would be a lot of German food restaurants. This phenomenon is true of anywhere you go in California when it comes to Mexican food. It's everywhere ...kind of like unemployment these days. Nevertheless El Torero turns out better than average Mexican food and the people working there care enough to be friendly. Consider ordering whole beans as an option. Frijoles are such a staple that it's not such a bad idea to change it up here. The adjacent cantina has an impressive selection of tequilas, which is fine unless you've ever in your life had a tequila hangover and then all you want to see there is just a bunch of pretty bottles. Which is what I see. The cervesa selection is ample. Some of what I originally imbibed in Mexico eventually found its way here and that made me happy.
