This was my first and last time ordering takeout from here. I placed my order at 4:22 PM and was told it would take 10 minutes however I arrived at 5:08 PM due to lane closures (road work) only to find my food sitting on the counter cold. When I asked if the bag was mine and how the food is kept warm, the employee simply shrugged. When asking for a manager I was told there was not one in , so I went to the car and called and was told to call back at 5:30pm for a manager . So I basically just paid $27 for cold food with no resolution. Really disappointing experience. read more

I eat here often. I've never had a bad meal and the service is always good. They have great drink specials on Thursdays if you're looking for spot to get a drink. Music gets a little loud at times. Servers are always friendly. Recommend if you're into Tex-Mex cuisine. read more

Attempted to have dinner. The service or lack of, was horrible. Waited over 10 minutes for server to even greet us. Then he came back with drinks and then he said "oh hey I'm going on break so I'll have someone else take your order". Which another server showed up almost 10 more minutes later with a drink order we never ordered, We already had drinks. So we decided to pay bill and leave. The place was empty. Best choice for dine in eating on this stretch of S. Limestone. Not always as fast as some other El Toro locations, but definitely your best option in the area, if you're not in the mood for fast food. This is an often "overlooked" El Toro location (at least for us...) and it's a bit more "worn around the edges," but its convenient location, close to Interstate 70 and nearby motels, makes it a great choice if you're in the area. All the El Toro locations have the same menu, so it's really just a question of how well you're treated when you walk in the door (fine!) and the service you get before, during and after your meal (consistently good!!). No complaints, no surprises, just consistently good, well-made Mex/American food. I sometimes wish El Toro would branch off a bit, make some changes, or offer up some more "typical" Mexican cuisine, but it is what it is, good, standard, consistent food, iwith service and prices to match. Meh....it was ok but nothing special. The chips and salsa were fresh and very good! I ordered a #1 which included 2 enchiladas (beef was my choice). They were very bland and no flavor at all. It also came with a hard shell taco and I'll add that it was fantastic! I love the fact that they use white cheese. The Mexican rice was very traditional and seasoned just right. It reminded me of the rice I've had numerous times in Mexico. I also ordered a Margarita on the rocks! A+++ for this! It definitely hit the spot and much better than other restaurants. Man oh man. My partner and I each work 10-12 hour shifts, 5 days a week. On top of that, we're home schooling, my partner is in nursing school full time, alongside his full time job.... and we're just flat out tired. Today (11/20/20 at 2:15pm), my partner placed an order for us to pick up at 6pm. The lady at the counter told me she didn't have an order. She didn't see his name anywhere, and the man who took the order at 2:15 did not give my partner a confirmation number. A $50 order, and nothing was actually placed to order. My coworkers and I travel all over the country and love trying local places, leave good reviews, and especially love trying the locals' version of amazing Mexican food. I know the farther you get from the South/Southwest that Mexican food really isn't Mexican anymore.. but good Lawd. Google image search Quesadilla. Do it. You won't find anything like this. This was a lightly toasted tortilla shell full of mushy onions, peppers, grilled chicken and what could only be the contents of the grease trap from the night before. This wasn't a Quesadilla. This was an invitation to a date night with the porcelain throne and a side of colon cleanse. I can only imagine that the cook saw the order for Grilled Chicken Quesadilla come through and thought "As little as effort as possible." If you're looking for anything remotely, esthetically or cosmetically close to a quesadilla in this town - go to Taco Bell. Or just wrap some spam in a quesadilla. If you want a colon cleanse, dine at this fine establishment. Also, the service was seriously top notch. Your staff is super nice. El Toro has been our go to Mexican food since we moved here to Springfield, 4 years ago. But recently something has changed. I personally can't handle spicy food and I usually get Arroz con Carne with 2 sets of tortillas and a side of queso. But lately it has been so spicy I can't eat the food from El Toro. Their queso has gotten so spicy and it's not just one restaurant it's both of them. My daughter-in-law came down from Northwest Ohio and they've been to El Toro in the past and they loved it but a couple months ago they were down visiting, and she's like oh my gosh this is so spicy and she couldn't eat her food. I couldn't eat my food either, it went in the garbage. I don't know if they've changed where they got their queso from as much as I love El Toro our family has had to stop coming to their store. I can't handle the spicy food and so we've had to switch to another Mexican restaurant that isn't such spicy food. When you look at their menu, they have a red jalapeño next to the food that is spicy. My meal and the queso do not have the red pepper. It makes me really sad because we have a huge family with nine kids and myself and my husband plus we have some kids that are married so when our kids come down we've always ordered or went into the restaurant and eaten and even our kids noticed that something had changed. It's just really sad because they have excellent service and we used to love the food. If the food Hatten turn spicy, I would've given him five stars. read more

We found El Toro by accident and decided to chance it. How bad could it be? We were pleasantly surprised it was quite good. The chips and salsa were delivered promptly to the table. Our drinks arrived in like two minutes. The menu looked traditional mexican fare, so I went for the fajitas. They were quite delicious. They came out sizzling the veggie were done al dente and the chicken was yummy. The rice was flavorful and fluffy the beans were slow-roasted and delicious. I only wish you got more than two tortillas and if they were homemade that was would that much better. My friend ordered the chilaquiles which were good but covered in too much cheese it detracted from the flavor of the sauce. But if you like cheese you're in luck. Love the chips and Salsa - often stop on my way through to grab some for my family. 3 weeks ago - two large chips and two large salsa (salsa in large plastic soda cups with straw lids so beware of leakage = $15. - excellent deal even with the leakage. Today - one large chips and one large salsa (in a smaller plastic cup than before) = $10 = screw job. (note - this is the stuff they give you for free when you order an entree and $10 is more than most of their entrees.....) Small angry fella in red shirt black pants who took the order and apparently made up the price, hands me the bag with the medium plastic glass laying on it's side in the bag leaking salsa juice all over and gives me a dirty look on the way out. We thought we'd struck road-trip gold when we pulled off the interstate to fill up and discovered a restaurant with a full parking lot (always a good sign) right off the exit. Turns out it was more like striking coal. The food was mediocre, but at least we didn't have to wait too long for it. The real bummer came after we ate. Our server never returned... in fact, he never made eye contact with me again (and believe me, I tried). After 15 minutes of waiting for to-go boxes and the check, I gave up and left my table to talk to him. He handed me the check in the middle of the restaurant with no "sorry" or "thank you"... just "pay at the front". Oh, and they cleared our leftovers in the 30 seconds I was away from the table. So we didn't need to-go boxes after all... which was probably for the best as the food wasn't very good. I don't know what other options there are for Mexican food in this area, but I would not eat here again unless I was desperate. read more

A Great Find We were driving west on I-70 between Columbus, OH and Portland, IN when we realized we were hungry, and we needed to stop for something to eat. We saw the billboard for El Toro Bar & Grill, in Springfield (home of the Simpson's?), OH. We pulled off of the freeway on Exit 54, drove a short distance down Limestone St, and pulled into El Toro. The to-go menu indicated that this was a small chain of restaurants in the area. We were seated in a booth by a very friendly hostess, to the sounds of pleasant cantina music. We were immediately brought large bowls of very tasty chips and salsa. We looked over the menus and started with a VERY cold Dos Equis in a bottle with a wedge of lime, and a regular-size Margarita Texanas. We really appreciate when restaurants keep the beer frosty cold. The margarita was really good, although perhaps a bit heavy on the Gran Marnier. It was still a very good margarita. I ordered a cheese enchilada, bean burrito, rice, and beans from the Vegetarian section of the menu. The sauce on the cheese enchilada was very complex and delicious, and I detected a hint of cinnamon in it. It was really good and I would definitely order it again. My husband ordered Pollo Colorado, with rice and beans. He thought that it was excellent. It had large chunks of perfectly cooked chicken in a wonderful sauce, although it was slightly too salty. Overall it was really good, though. The service was excellent, being friendly and attentive without being intrusive. I would definitely recommend El Toro to locals as well as road-weary travelers. This our Friday night dinner spot, we all love it! The food is great, always hot and never a long wait (even on busy nights). I regret coming here. The short version: mediocre food, so-so service, and unresponsive management. The salsa was basically a tomato puree with scant flecks of cilantro. The pollo loco - one of my favorite dishes at Mexican restaurants - looked unappetizing and had a taste to match. Bland chicken, yet a little greasy, with bland beans and chorizo on top. I have never tasted bland chorizo, but now I can't say that. The rice wasn't bad - the flavor was ok, but it was dry like it had been sitting around a while. There were no peppers or veggies in it - just rice - which is ok. All of that might not have prompted me to take the time to write a review. I almost always only post good reviews. I checked their website before I went and saw that the Sunday specials included the dish that I ordered. The restaurant didn't have it as a special and I was told that "they don't update the website.". I was already set on having that meal, so I said I would order it anyway, but asked to talk with the manager He didn't come see me. Instead, he just had the server come back and repeat what she had told me already. I asked to see him again. He did come, but said there was nothing he could do. He said that the special was good at all other locations except two. I said that I was disappointed that they weren't honoring an advertised price, bit moreso that he didn't come talk to me himself in the first place. I asked if there was someone to contact to provide feedback, but he said there wasn't. He ended up saying he would honor the price. He rang me up personally, and guess what:. he charged full price. I just paid it. The issue wasn't the $3.00 that I could have saved - it was the poor customer service. It made the food less enjoyable than it already was. I should have known from the time I walked into the restaurant. That same manager greeted staff behind the counter after he got off the phone before greeting me as I stood there waiting. read more
