The one waitress we had was rude and intentionally disrespectful. She sighs while taking orders as if we are wasting her time. Her demeanor is one that should be kept behind the scenes and not associating with the public. She speaks poorly of customers she thinks cannot understand Spanish. Overall pretty good. The chips come warm and are really good with the salsa and coleslaw type mix that they bring with it. The service is friendly, but was a little slow at times (took a while to bring soda, even after we reminded them one time, chips refill was slow). Overall the service was good. We got a variety of different things and everyone liked their food and the food is priced fairly. There is a ton of variety on the menu, so you should be able to get almost anything you would want. The service & atmosphere was fair however, the food was dry, overcooked rice; the enchiladas sauce tasted like "tomato" without any spice.

I really don't know what was better here-- the delicious food or the outstanding service from Dio. I have never ever been treated better at a restaurant. We asked for things constantly and had annoying intricate orders that Dio handled with ease. He was so sweet and honest it made the experience 10x better. The food was exactly like Dio's service. With the chips and salsa you'll also get this mixture of jalapeños, cabbage and tomatoes I think that tasted like pure heaven. I ordered a vegan chimichanga and instead of meat they packed it with extra veggies which made it sooo much better. To drink I had a sangria that was bomb (see attached pic). Great spot to fill up after a day a Bear Valley. My kid and I were STARVING after boarding all day and we walked from our room at Timberline Lodge. We've been here before and food is always tasty and comes out nice and hot. Big platters! We were nervous at first because the Italian place we planned to eat at the night before we cancelled because none of the staff were wearing masks when we walked in. We walked into Vaquero and greeted by masked staff and server, and were offered patio which was perfect on a warm March evening. Great service, great food and very affordable. read more

We've been frequenting El Vaquero since we bought our cabin here in Arnold 2 years ago. Not gonna lie, this place is one of the best Mexican restaurants we've been to and we're from the Bay Area, living near the Mission District which is famous for their Latin cuisine. We love their burrito gigante, chimichanga, taquito, enchiladas, and chips with guac and they are always on point. The staff I've interacted with are always friendly. I have been coming to this restaurant for many years. It is my go to spot when up in the mountains. Great price. Atmosphere. Parking. But last time we ate here it was just not the same. I know foot traffic is hard to come by in Arnold. It is seasonal and Makes it hard for restaurants to survive. But putting that aside, quality can still exist. The quality just didn't match what I have had here before. Felt more like fake cheese being microwaved. Small portions for the salsa which also could be re-invented. Horrible and rude customer service. Went to go eat with some friends, ended up just having a beer instead due to the service. The waiter needs some customer service training ASAP. Asked if they made margaritas and the waiter said yes. Asked if they had a full bar waiter said no. . Where else can you get Mexican food in a ski town? Arnold, California is the place to go. This little sleepy town has a hidden gem hidden away on the main road blink and you will miss it. Tasty and authentic at a more then reasonable price. Watch out the salsa will burn your taste buds right off. The cheese enchiladas are full of flavor. I recommend the red sauce it's hot but much milder than the salsa. But if you want come and smooth go for the green sauce. read more

Wanted to like this place but never got the chance. We were outside for about five minutes looking at the menu and then when we went inside to order they said they were closed even though it was only 8 o'clock. Their open sign was on, their front door was not locked, we just saw another customer come out while we were looking at the menu, and their closing time is listed as 8:30 PM. It would've been helpful if they had turned off their open sign when they decided they were closing early for the evening... If you're planning on going in the evening, I would suggest that you call ahead and make sure that they are open! read more

I think this is the only Mexican food place in town and thankfully, it's a good one! We've been going to this place for many years and at first bite, we thought it was mediocre. We gave it another try and another try and now we love it! We always call in our order for take out so I suppose we were dining covid style before covid was a thing. The food usually always takes "20 minutes" which is enough time to grab a beanie and head down the hill. Unfortunately, no tequila based margaritas but you can get a wine based margarita. Lately we've been all about the breakfast burritos at 11am, right at opening. Parking is usually not bad but it is up a steep hill which can be slippery during winter. Customer service is excellent. In fact, that's what prompted me to write this review. We got all the way home and noticed that one of our burritos was "dry" when requested to be "wet". They ended up remaking the burrito and apologized profusely. We will be back, maybe tomorrow! PS - it was a veggie burrito, wet with green sauce and it was outstanding! read more

This and Arnold Chinese are the only two places I'm willing to eat out in this town. I love being able to sit outside. Had the compuesta for the first time and it was really good. yum.
