Having lived in the North for almost ten years, I have not yet found a Mexican Food restaurant that reminds me of home (Texas). Today, I found just that. El Vaquero Mexicano. Five stars and a call home to family and friends.

On our last day in the area, we decided to have lunch at El Vaquero before heading home. We got the Chorizo con Huevo which was a Mexican sausage sauteed with onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, and three eggs. It was also served with rice and beans and tortillas. This dish was actually quite good and I wished I had order this. I've never seen a dish like this made in any of the Mexican restaurants in my area. The sausage was like ground and mixed with the eggs. It had a nice flavor. I got the chicken quesadilla which didn't seem to have enough cheese. There was little flavor in the chicken. It tasted like shredded plain white meat without any seasoning. It was edible but definitely lacking flavor. Great service.

Chips and salsa for the table.

A very nice little Mexican restaurant right in central Ligonier. The space was decorated with a some amount of kitch, which give it a lot of character. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the food was all very good. Most of the items on the menu were standard items that you would find at any Mexican restaurant in Pennsylvania, presented in much the same way you would expect (i.e., with rice, refried beans, lettuce, etc.). Some items on the menu were a little less typical (e.g., papas con huevo). Everything was very nicely presented, and the vegetables were all very fresh and crisp. All told, this was a nice low-key place to grab some good food without too much fanfare.

Stopped in for lunch after hiking this morning. They had a Cowboy Bean Soup listed as a special so I tried it. Delicious, and felt very healthy with several varieties of beans plus chunks of tomato, celery and carrots all in a savory broth. They served it with a huge chunk of cornbread which was moist and topped with melted cheese. Mmm! My daughter had the Watermelon Water which was especially refreshing after our hike. She also chose a chicken nacho as her lunch. It was huge! I guess it's an appetizer meant to share. She managed to eat half and took home the rest for later. Always great authentic food and pleasant service here. So nice to have good Mexican food close to home!

Enjoyed lunch here last weekend. Great atmosphere and tasty food. The service was a bit slow but other than that, great experience!

By far the best homemade Mexican food we've had in while that's not a chain!!! Love this place! Taquitos and tamales are the best!!!

Drinks - I started my meal with a skinny marg, which typically just means less or no simple. This marg was SO sweet, but had an off taste, almost like they used fake sugar typically used in diet sodas. I'm not usually super picky, but this drink was undrinkable. I switched it for a tap beer which was much, much better. TLDR; go beer, not cocktails. Food - I ordered the fajita burrito, which came topped in some sort of enchilada red sauce. This made the top of the burrito soggy, and I really did not care for the sauce. I started to eat the filling but woof, it was just not good. The chicken pieces were tiiiiiny and there were barely any fajita veggies. My boyfriend said his enchiladas were fine, and the rest of the table were pretty meh on their food. Note - My friend ordered the same thing as me, and said he got sick during the night (he suspects it's from the food). Service - Nice waitstaff that were attentive. No complaint here. I'd personally give the food a 1 star, but bc the service was solid and some folks at the table thought the food was (barely) passable I upped it to 2. Also, they have a tv and had the game on, which was nice, but we will not be returning.

No A/C. Margarita's were super watered down. Guacamole had no flavor and salsa either. Will not…read morebe going back.

We all remembered it so we decided to go back while visiting her again. Of course, we ordered the same margarita tower (which holds 80 oz of margarita). While we were enjoying it, a lady from another table came up to us, pointed at the tower and asked, "WHAT IS THIS!?" We explained what it was and she seemed fascinated by it. Maybe she'll order one the next time she visits. LOL. Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling well that day so I couldn't drink much. That just meant more for my husband and our aunt and they certainly didn't complain. All the food we ordered was delicious and we had a wonderful time catching up. There were lots of laughs and great conversation which made the experience even better.

Thoroughly disappointed…read more The beef in the beef fajitas was cut so small that I have honestly had McDonald's French fries that were larger. The "premium" margarita was the exact same house premixed margarita mix with a splash of slightly better tequila added to it. Nothing about it felt premium. Service was disappointing as well. Our waiter barely checked on the food and never really checked to see if we needed refills. Then came the churros. We ordered churros to go. The picture showed churros on a plate with chocolate on the side. What we received was completely covered in chocolate, canned whipped cream, and some kind of strawberry or cherry syrup. Honestly, I have no idea what it was because the red color looked completely unnatural. I asked the waiter for plain churros instead--not the overly Americanized, bastardized version we had just received. Apparently, "plain" meant SERIOUSLY plain. No sugar. No cinnamon. Nothing. At that point, we were done and headed up to pay, only to find out that paying with a card adds almost another $4 as an "admin fee." I sincerely hope that fee is being split with the staff, because believe me, no additional tip was left after this experience. This is not a place I will ever return to.
