This was our first visit to this rustic tasting room, and we had a nice experience. It was a Friday, right after opening, and we had the whole place to ourselves. The service was friendly, and my wife and I shared a traditional and custom flight. We thought that the wines were decent, some better suited to our palates than others, but well-made, nonetheless. We were fortunate to meet and speak with the owner who happened to be bringing in supplies and got a little more detail on the wines, than we did from our "winerista". He also mentioned that his niece opened a winery in Los Olivos (Story of Soil), which focused on wine styles a little out of our wheelhouse, but we thought we'd give that a try as well, and it turned out to be a fantastic recommendation. Costa De Oro is a nice place with wine varietals for everyone's tastes. I recommend you stop in and give them a try when you're passing through the area.

It's located at the easterly end of town, rather than in the center of town where most of the other wineries are located. Kevin Law, owner/winemaker, is making some of the best wines anywhere in the area. I say this with my usual disclaimer that what my palate loves, yours may not, so check them out for yourselves. Will, the assistant winemaker, happened to be pouring during our recent visit. He's a wonderful host and always takes care of us. We tasted the following: '19 Blanc de Blancs Sparkling (100% Chardonnay), '24 Aligoté (Santa Barbara), '19 Chardonnay (La Rinconada), '22 Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills), '21 Pinot Noir (Sanford & Benedict), and a '19 "Derive" Bordeaux blend (48% Napa & 52% Santa Ynez Valley). As usual, we loved everything! I honestly can't tell you what they charge for a tasting, as we've always purchased 6 or more bottles, and they've waived the fee. I am a huge horror fan so I was beyond excited to check them out over the weekend! The inside and vibe was all I could hope for and more! We were immediately greeted when we arrived and found a table to sit at and enjoy our time. There were only a few tables plus bar seating available so it was nice and cozy. I loved seeing all of the horror memorabilia, decor and merchandise throughout including the killer Ghostface mask and Halloween pinball machine. My husband ordered a glass of their Cab which he loved and I ordered a Vamperol Spritz - they were even kind enough to make our daughter a mocktail. They even brought her over a Nightmare Before Christmas activity kit to keep busy and we bought a Michael Myers sticker as well as a Nightmare Before Christmas hair clip to take home. I'm kicking myself now for not buying a t-shirt! Kids are very welcome at this winery which was a huge plus for us! Staff were personable and made our visit very enjoyable! Stephan, the owner/winemaker, poured for us and provided us with his winemaking history. We tasted three wines, a '20 Chardonnay, a '22 Grenache, and a '22 Tempranillo, with revisits of our favorites. All were good, and we left with a couple bottles to add to our home cellar. He also had a couple friends visiting that brought their guitars and had a little folk music jam session, which created a very relaxing and fun ambiance. The week before our visit, they participated in the annual Mushroom Festival where they poured the same wines, however they had a food menu with several mushroom based items which really caught my eye. I tried all of the wines on their tasting flight, and it's nice to see that the college grows so many different varietals. Some of my favorites were the Albariño (bonus points for growing this varietal on site), Chardonnay, 2015 Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Malbec (the only non-estate offering). I ended up taking a bottle of the pinot home. The service is great! We had a first-year student helping us who was very knowledgeable about the wines and the enology and viticulture program at AHC. For reference, this was on August 17 around 3 pm, so whoever that was, major props to you!
