What a gem, a special little find! This is a newly owned, small boutique winery with a focus on creating a high quality, low tannin craft wine at a reasonable price. The Chardonnay was my favorite. Monarch Grove Winery Tasting Room is a tiny, dog friendly tasting room that is located right at the train station, with it's own (free) parking. My husband, our little girl dog and I came by here on Monday afternoon, around 1:45 pm. We came here thinking that the wine tasting was only $6 for 6 tastings. However the price jumped up at $10 for 6 tastings. When asked the owners inside about that, they seemed a little annoyed by that question on the price since I had seen a photo from last month on Yelp that the price was $6. Anyways, we ended up paying for 1 tasting since I told both owners that I really only like dessert wines and they do not have many dessert wines on their list to choose from. I think that may have left a bad taste in one of the owner's mouths when he hosted us, because we felt rushed during our tasting and I felt from his conversation and the vibe of our tasting that he didn't want to put too much effort into this tasting, assuming that we would not buy anything. Anyways, I did try some of the tastings that my husband tried. In the end, my husband ended up purchasing 2 bottles of Gernache, $19.99 per bottle. In the end, my husband ended up paying over $50 for the 2 bottles, one wine tasting and tax. I don't see myself coming back here. Please note that there is one unisex restroom available for customers. Seating is very small in here. They do serve pretzels with your tasting. But you an also purchase a cheese plate to go with your tasting if you wish. read more

I came to this winery on 12/16/2018 with my date. We had trouble finding this hidden winery and decided to grab a bite to eat and come back to find it. Anywho this winery is literally right next to the Grover Beach train station. Which is pretty cool as you can wait for your train and try out some delicious wine. When we walked in we were instantly greeted by the Owners husband and wife such a beautiful couple with their love for making good wine! They actually educated us on their wine and the reason behind their name which is named after the Monarch butterfly which is a gorgeous little critter. We got to sample several wines and my favorite was the two pictured. This was my first time wine tasting and I did not know that it would be so personal and intimate! The inside is so cute and adorable, they also shared their upcoming future plans with us which I am ultimately happy to see them expand their horizons. The husband was very knowledgeable as I can tell he is the mastermind behind the crafts and his wife is the icing on the cake as she was very sweet and warm. My date gifted me two bottles of wine that I liked the most when I came back from the ladies room as it was all wrapped up. My wife and I first found Monarch Grove on a trip to Pismo Beach searching for local wineries. We found their Groupon deal and paid a visit, which we were utterly charmed by. We love the proximity to the Amtrak station, the delicious, fruit-forward flavor of their wine, and how they are a small, local operation. We soon joined their membership club and ordered their wine all the way back to Los Angeles for our wedding, which our guests absolutely loved. We'd absolutely recommend Monarch Grove. read more

Don't get intimidated by the fact that it is located at the train stop. Anyone can stop by and enjoy a tasting. The owner was very knowledgable of the wines and didn't word vomit and overwhelm us with too much info. All the wines were delicious, but my favorite was the Monarch nectar. Not too sweet, but nice and smooth for a summer day. Literally called the patio sipper this is a wine you can sip with some friends during the day. I'm more of a red fan so the Malbec was the runner up here for me. All great wines so jump on groupon, taste some wines, and fall in love with one and take it home. read more

We tasted 6 wines and all were good. The rose and the She Said red blend were our favorites, but the Chard, the He Said red blend, and Petite Sirahs were also good. What was really nice is that 6 tastings were $12 in an area where every other winery in the area is $20 or more for as little as 4 tastings, most are $25 or more. I have a very hard time understanding why tastings are so high when most tastings equal about a glass, some a little more, some a little less. So we visit far fewer tasting rooms and are exposed to far fewer wines and thus buy far fewer wines at wineries. The wine is great and the way they pair the cheeses with each wine are great. They make you feel like family with a warm welcoming. We were in Pismo Beach for our anniversary and we stopped by the tasting room. Nice environment with plenty of natural light flooding in through the large windows while we sat at the wine tasting bar. The woman managing the bar was cordial, and engaging with conversation while we savored a couple of glasses of red wine. Ended up buying a bottle for our wine rack at home. Great way to spend an hour just sipping wine and enjoying the conversation. Looking forward to going back. read more

We recently moved to the area from Southern California and Monarch was our first weekend winery that we visited after moving. We have been back many times since our first visit and we enjoy it each time even more than the last. My husband and I even brought my parents to Monarch when they came to visit. It is a cute and quaint tasting room and many of the wines are lovely and delicious. The best part however are the owners-Cheri and Joe. They are kind, down to earth and funny. Quaint little place. Right next to the train station parking lot. We did a Groupon wine tasting here and I must say that all of the wines we tried were very good, not to strong, not to dry, perfect. I recommend bringing a few people along but calling first if they can accommodate your party because this place is very small and I feel like we were ignored a bit when a bigger party came in after us. I love this winery if but for its great wines and charm. And by charm I mean the winery is nestled in a small building next to a railroad station. Our tastings were done with the owner, Joe. He was excellent is making us feel welcome and was an amazing host. Very down to earth and friendly. Also of note was his pet, Buster the dog. Many pettings were given. If anything, we all come to do wine tastings, but I would definitely recommend going for the wine tasting with cheese & crackers. It makes the experience all the better. Again, this place has charm. Beyond the wine and cozy seating area, there's also numerous wine related/themed stuff to look at and purchase. Best of all, the wines are great and not wallet busters. If you love a more quiet winery and personal approach from the server(s), then this is definitely your place to visit. read more

I love the wine they produce in general, so they get a star for that. The tasting room is in an odd place, by the amtrak train station. But overall it was not a terrible experience, but not great either. I felt a bit rushed through the tasting which was not waived when I bought bottles (this always irks me, as other wineries do waive the fee, but you can't have everything!) and I also was annoyed that I was not even told the type of wine being poured, but was expected to read the labels on the bottles displayed. Personally, I like to hear about the specific wine from the server, and if it's not overly busy, please make the effort! I love learning about the process and tasting notes. I was their only customer. O_o So I ended up buying two bottles on sale, 2 for $20 and let me tell you, this wine should NOT have been sold to the public. It had an off flavor, almost carbonated and had written on the bottle "decanter mix" which was suspect and in my opinion, a big problem. I decanted as instructed and was not notified about this until after I decided to purchase. I could not believe the flavor. It was like nothing I've ever tasted. It didn't even taste like wine. I aerated it several times, let it "sit" as instructed, and still, it just didn't taste great. At all. I did take the bottles back, which they were nice about that at least, but it really turned me off to the whole experience. I would not buy the wine on sale again and won't become a member due to this experience. I would also say that putting a limit on wine tasting for members to once per week seems a bit odd. If you are a member, you should be able to come taste every day if you want! I know other wine clubs in the area don't put a limit on that. But they do have limited space. I've never been in there when it's busy. Overall I am pretty disappointed, but this being a very small winery in Grover, I hate to put a negative review. So I gave 2 stars. But I just do not think it's okay (at all) to sell a "decanter mix" wine and charge the customer $20 a bottle for it. I know $20 isn't a lot in the scheme of things, but for me, I get *amazing* bottles at other wineries for this price point. read more
