I almost skipped Elsy's because of threatening Septa, "no parking" signs everywhere! But alas! I found two hour parking across the tracks as I stumbled my way all the way back to this train stop nook! The interior is classy, bright, open, it almost feels European. It's fun watching the train fly while pondering the fantastical book selection, but you might skip it on your way to the outside seating. Went there with my Jewish girlfriend, was an awesome place with a great atmosphere it almost made me want to be a local in glenside so I could commute just so I had a place like that to sit in and wait for my train. The food was great and the coffee also was AMAZING!!!! The only downside to this AMAZING place was the large painting by the bathroom. From a distance it looked like a beautiful piece of abstract work but upon further inspection, you can notice a plethora of what appears to be SWASTIKAS!! All in all 9.9 out of 10. Cute location. Really cute. Went on a Saturday morning, and it was very busy. It's a bit disorganized inside. Wasn't sure if we needed to order food or sit down and have a server come to us. I was told if we sat down a server would come. We waited for five minutes with no one coming. I had to go grab a server. I wanted to order coffee and once the server came, she was like - you have to get up and get your own. They should have two separate stations during their busy rush - one inside the dining area and another for those grabbing to go. It was a bit inconvenient. on to the food: the croissant egg/cheese sandwich with sausage was very good. my friend got bacon, egg, cheese, tomato and spinach on a sesame seed bagel - that looked amazing. the menu is simple. it's a very cute location and has it's own charm inside. the owners are very friendly. i'd definitely come back again for breakfast. a girl can hope that one day they'll offer some sides with their egg sandwiches (roasted potatoes...yum). read more

Having never eaten here in the past but a true believer that Glenside consistently pulls off the "place the locals eat" tag line, I tried Elcy's out. It is snuggly nestled in the Glenside Train station and largely prepped for the commuter coffee crowd with afternoon lunch for those of us who are pre-tired. The best coffee around! Charming and cozy spot tucked inside the Glenside train station. They make delicious breakfast options and baked goods. A great place to go if you are a tired parent with a kid who loves trains :) Coffee and trains is a win win! I have enjoyed meals at Elcy's for a number of years. It has a nice overall embiance and a good staff running the kitchen. The variety of menu selections is better than most similar small cafes I have been to offer. Like some other reviewers, I also feel that the coffee could be better, and the music selection and decor could use improving. My most recent visit started out well. I enjoyed a cold beverage, appetizer and sandwich then waited several minutes to get a coffee order to my waitress. After waiting even longer to get my check, I went to the register, where I had to recite to the young lady there everything I had ordered to settle up my bill. Renovations look great. The station building used to be old and decrepit, and these folks came in around 2000 and juved it up with local artwork and paraphernalia. The coffee is great, food menu is innovative, and self-service is offered as well as a fully prepared lunch but you never have to pay through the nose to refill your think tank on the way into the city. They've also got a FREE WIFI hotspot so you can yelp over your tea and cookies. And this isn't one of those snobby cafe's that asks you to buy something before you may use the wifi or the bathroom, although, how can you really resist? When I mention the innovative menu, I'm talking about a wide range of food, drink and dessert selections, which is always inspired by local recipes. A different sandwich or soup special every day is offered. Save room for the jewish apple cake or the zucchini bread and many other fine assortments for dessert! I don't see how it could be any better, but the staff is always striving any which way to improve upon a great concept. Regular customers and new customers alike are served like family. For Peter who complained about slow wait service, you should understand that the seating area is in the lobby of a still operational train station with three trains an hour in each direction. A train leaves Glenside almost every 15 minutes. Therefore, 60% of the people sitting at tables may be non-customers on a given Friday morning when the place is not especially busy. Maybe you should identify yourself as a potential late breakfast or early lunch customer and don't be so hesitant to send yourself up to the counter, instead of making your kid ask for a waitress and a menu if you're not spotted right away. If I were actually a hungry paying customer, I wouldn't wait 20 minutes to get myself noticed, and it's not the kind of place that should let you. This is the reason I sometimes make the extra commute to the Glenside Station! In addition to more departures...there is Elcy's!! They have wonderful Valley Green coffee, The "Mighty Muffin" that keeps you going all morning, and be sure to try a breakfast sandwich, I tried an egg and bacon on LeBus sourdough bread. It was such a great start to my day! I've yet to do lunch, but it's on my list as their menu selection is fresh, local, and inventive. I've been to Elcy's many times over the years. It was great when it first opened. Then with some changes it slipped. I'm happy to say Elcy's is back! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Servers couldn't be more helpful and attentive. They have done a great job transforming this once drab space into a vibrant respite for travelers and locals alike. The food on my most recent visit was delicious. They took a basic turkey sandwich put it on multigrain bread added avocado and sprouts and suddenly it's a hit. The roast beef with cheese and vegetables on sourdough served warm was delicious. The ice tea/lemonade is always a favorite. All food is made to order, despite this our lunch came quickly. This was one of my favorite local spots to grab breakfast / lunch. The slogan of "eat fresh" rang true, fresh turkey, chicken, and tuna were available on a number of options. Today I paid a visit to find out that the options for lunch are now pre packaged sandwiches. Today at 10:45 there was one pre made sandwich available because they were delivered the previous day. Elcy's Coffeehouse and Cafe is now under new ownership by a lovely local couple who bring a sense of community to Glenside. If you've never been, Elcy's is a tiny niche carved into the Glenside train station that serves up fresh and locally roasted coffee as well as homemade bites that satisfy your sweet and savory breakfast and lunch cravings. New owners Al and Amy Chapman brew their locally roasted Valley Green coffee and the unique flavors vary seasonally. Smoothies, blended coffee drinks, tea, and hot chocolate (with house made Belgian chocolate syrup) are also available. The daily lunch specials are creative but never pretentious and make use of fresh, local ingredients like hand-carved turkey and seasonal produce. Al and Amy actually smoke some of their own meats and have a hand in food prep as well. Amy supplies the shop's deliciously moist and flavorful scones. The menu is short and sweet but their offerings are top-notch and I heartily recommend the California sandwich with turkey, sprouts, avocado, red onion, spinach, and fresh toasted bread. The Southwestern Breakfast Burrito is another favorite and will keep you full straight through lunch. Elcy's actually packs in quite a few seats for such a tiny space and patrons are encouraged to share with one another - a welcome departure from those who monopolize whole tables at Starbucks. Keep in mind, though, that this is still a working train station with passengers coming and going regularly. The SEPTA ticket booth resides at the rear of the coffeeshop, so I don't advise attempting to study for your exams here. There are places where you go to be alone and then there are places where you go to be with people. Elcy's is a lively community place with first Friday events, open mics, and children's story hour. It's a place where people come to engage, to meet their neighbors and friends - not a place to hide in a wingback chair for hours while your laptop drains the shop's power supply. If it's a lovely day, Elcy's is surely busy! With the Glenside Farmer's Market picking up speed, Elcy's will certainly be a place to see and be seen on a Saturday morning. read more

I came here today, it's such a convenient location and the staff is friendly. I had a Nantucket Nectars lemonade from the cooler and an oatmeal raisin cookie to go. The cookie was moist and tasty but I wish it didn't have so much of a cinnamon taste. It was nice to be able to pay with my debit card! Such a surprise of a little shop. Had to catch the train and in under 10 minutes they were able to make 2 breakfast sandwiches, and iced coffee, and a hot coffee. (The coffee hear is above average). The same could be said for the sandwhiches which were cheesy and delicious. The sausage was flavorful and the bagels were fresh. For something so simple, breakfast sandwiches are usually hit or miss, and more expensive then they need to be. These were good, quick, and at a solid price (2 sandwiches and 2 coffees for 14$ isn't bad). I will be sure to stop in any time I need to catch the train! read more

Let me be frank. I only gave it four stars because I don't have enough of a metric to give it five. That being said, this place is simply great. Food is always very fresh. Service has never been an issue for me. Try getting quality food like theirs at mcdonalds with the kind of smile you get from this morning crew. The people who have written complaints must have either been anomalies or have abnormally high standards. It's almost never crowded and when it is they make it a point to pick up the pace to get you on time for your trains. I had plenty of time for this place to toast and butter a bagel especially seeing as there was no one in front of me and two women standing and chatting behind the counter however apparently a bagel was too much for this place to handle today. Been here a few times for coffee and have been pleased so I decided to try it for lunch. I was not impressed. Small menu with very few vegetarian options. The veggie wrap wasn't anything special and was overpriced- most places would include chips or at least pickles but this was just the wrap on a plate. read more

I've bought breakfast sandwiches a few times from here and it was okay, a tad bit pricey. My issue is that one of the cashiers is rude to me every time I order from here . She places my change/debit card on the counter even when my hand is extended. I watched her do it to two more customers this morning. We sat down and one of the waitresses came to get something from a cabinet, and looked straight at us. We then sat there for twenty minutes, waiting to order. Finally, I sent one of the girls to the front to ask the waitress if we could order, and from then on, it was fine. But it's absolutely ridiculous, on a Friday morning, when the place is not especially busy, to have someone just sit there and wait, particularly with two kids. I am a big fan of Elcy's. Yes, sometimes you get stuck with country music, and sometimes they do get jammed up in the kitchen - but I find it a nice friendly, sometimes relaixng place to have breakfast, lunch or just a coffee and the paper. The owners and staff are super nice, remember names, and joke and chat with anyone they don't know - a small subset of their customers, for sure. I love the sandwiches and wraps, and unlike some of the other reviews - I give the breakfast sandwiches a 4.5 - some of my favorite confort food around. If you want the perfect coffee shop with the perfect hipster music - try elsewhere. If you want a local hangout with friendly food and friends, Elcy's is a good spot. read more

Fun place, farmer's market out front every Saturday. I always get the egg and cheese plus on everything bagel. Egg was overdone today, but still good sandwich. Would be good to have a vegan option (or lactose free cheese, like cheddar). Several good jams, blueberry lime and peach basil were good. Coffee is stronger than I prefer, but not bad. Environment is one of biggest assets. It does get a little loud when lots of people are waiting for the train (esp if it's not nice out), but I still have worked remotely from there - no annoying Wi-Fi cutoff like panera. read more

In an age of Starbucks and Dunkin, I feel lucky to have a place like Elcy's. The young batistas are always polite and cheerful. The staff even remembered me after several months away, asking where I'd been. The coffee is tasty, roasted locally, and always convenient to the train or the Glenside Farmers Market. On Saturdays my husband and I will sometimes get up early to make our way over for an EC Plus on an everything bagel before the morning rush. Even when we can't get ourselves there early, it's worth the wait to support a local business with good eats and friendly faces. read more
