My new obsession. The banana bread syrup is the best I've ever had and you can tell it's made in house because it tastes like real bananas not like a laffy taffy. Their bagel sandwiches are also amazing and they have a really spicy habanero sauce that goes with it. The shop is small but has a decent amount of seating, I have trouble getting work done inside because they get so much foot traffic and I'm easily distracted. Also parking can be a hit or miss because it shares the lot with the train commuters and I wish they were open later because sometimes I crave the BBL at 4pm BUT even with all that said I still give this place 5 stars because I enjoy their food/service that much. Horrible. My husband got a regular coffee with oat milk and said it tasted acid'y or like the machine had soap in it and got in the coffee. I got a latte with oat milk, cardamom, and maple syrup which covered up the acidity but made me sick. Not sure if it's the coffee, the milk, or the flavors that did it but neither of us had consumed anything before this. Service and ambiance were fine. Pastries seemed picked over. Definitely could be improved by getting better coffee and having higher standards overall. read more

One of our favorite local spots in Glenside. They have excellent pastries, delicious breakfast options, yummy coffee and my toddlers favorite... smoothies! It has become a nice weekend ritual to walk to the cafe with our littles to get our breakfast treats. My favorite is their Deluxe breakfast sandwich with bacon, egg, avocado, cheddar, tomato, spinach, chipotle mayo on a bagel--it's just the best around. We also love picking up giant bags of Valley Green Coffee Co whole beans for the days we make our own coffee. We like dark coffee so Devils Pool is one of our favorite roasts! When I was commuting into the city for work, there literally could not be a better option for coffee on the go or last minute food when running late. It is really cozy inside and there are tables outside, which is perfect for kids who love to run around and also wave hello at the trains. In non-pandemic times, it's nice to sit inside but definitely a bit too tight for working on a laptop (and not guaranteed to be near a spot with an outlet). read more

Love the coffee! Sandwiches are nice, but don't always come with a pickle, you must ask and then sometimes it still doesn't come with a pickle. The pickles are amazing. I've gotten the tuna salad sandwich a couple times and I find it extremely salty. Just don't know why they have to put all that salt in there! The chicken salad sandwich is so delicious. read more

Live blogging from Elcy's Coffee House: I'm having a hard time with this one, because I really, really want to like it. The owner and staff are so nice, and the coffee and food are great. And it's kinda cute that it's at the train station, so you can hear the whistle whenever it pulls out of the station (I'm a sucker for stuff like that). However, it smells like bacon and they are blasting country music. Random, right? The seating is not comfy (think train station benches) and there is a serious lack of outlets. Some of the tables are even in the same room where you buy your SEPTA tickets. Hmmm...I can't decide whether this is charming or just plain weird. We really like it here! Super cute and quaint. Servers are always super friendly. Vegan options like almond milk lattes and hummus spread instead of cream cheese. Music is always great. Local art decorates the walls and is for sale. I love that! It does get crowded so that would be my only complaint is that I feel I am in people's way sometimes. They have smoothies and self serve coffee. The soups look good too. We make this and a stop by the farmer's market right outside on Saturdays our regular thing. They do have a few tables outside. Kiddos love it because they get to watch the trains ride by. We always bump into people we know and that seems to be the case for most other people as well. Super cute train station cafe. Elcy's had been on my radar ever since I moved to the 'burbs, and I finally had a free afternoon to come by and check it out. It's a cozy little place right at the Glenside train station. Their soy chai was fine, nothing particularly special but also not bad. But the flies ... The flies made it a pretty uncomfortable experience. Granted, I overheard the barista explaining to another customer that the owner was working on the problem. But the constant in-your-faceness of the flying critters made me leave not long after I sat down. Hope this issue is fixed now that we're in the colder months. I'm not sure I would come back, though, unless I were taking the train or in the area. read more

Elcy's has new ownership and I like the its new direction. From the London Underground inspired logo to the friendly staff, Elcy's has emerged as an asset for Glenside. They now have Valley Green Coffee which is quite good. I like that the varieties have local names such as Wissahickon and Forbidden Drive. There is one called Devil's Pool which sounds like the title of Sienfeld horror movie but is actually strong enough that my wife considers it adequate. That is no small accolade! I once helped myself to some Wissahickon and could only get a half cup before it went dry. I did not want a full cup anyway and offered to pay for half. The woman at the counter told me it was free. Stopped in for a quick bite today. I've heard good things. I ordered a hot chocolate and a breakfast sandwich. The "hot" chocolate was barely warm and the sandwich just wasn't good. I guess it was a microwaved egg patty and I did ask for ketchup & salt/pepper, but there was so much salt it was inedible. When I went to pay at the register I was asked if everything was OK. I stated that the hot chocolate wasn't hot and the sandwich wasn't very good and she said "oh OK that's nine dollars please." Obviously they don't care. For a coffee / sandwich shop built into a train station, they clearly don't understand the importance of getting you your food in time to catch a train. I ordered a sandwich to go 16 minutes before my train came and told them the time the train was coming. Judging from the nonchalant pace at which they were operating, I should have gone up to them earlier to remind them about the need to have them turnaround some meat in between two slices of bread in under 16 minutes. However, I waited until two minutes before the train arrived to check in, and the girl behind the counter hesitantly turned to the two sandwich making dudes to see if they had my sandwich - they hadn't started. As my train pulls up, she's asking me if I can give her my name and they'll note it in case I come back again. Since my name is a total of twelve chapters (not including the space) I decided it was more important to run out and catch my train than spell out my name for her to record on a napkin. That was a waste of $10! read more

I've been to Elcy's a few times now and I've got to say that they've got decent breakfast sandwiches. It's a beyond friendly place to have breakfast; it seems the owners and employees know everyone...or maybe it's just that people come back regularly. Saturdays are the best in the summer when you can eat breakfast and stroll through the Glenside Farmers Market. I'm giving Elcy's a very generous three stars. I completely agree with another reviewer in that I really want to like Elcy's, but the place is too flawed in too many ways. I'll begin with the positives. The owner and staff are great. Lisa et al are some of the friendliest people you could ever hope to meet. As a local businessperson, Lisa has made a great effort to support the Glenside community, and her dedication to the G'Side farmer's market and local artists is really commendable. The food is also quite good; from omelets to wraps to desserts, I've never had a bad meal at Elcy's. This is no easy feat for a small operation like this, and for that I give them props. But the low points of this place are pretty serious. * First, the coffee is NOT good. They typically use One Village Coffee, which is an outfit that seems to focus on social issues rather than a quality product. I suggest that Lisa and crew change over to some 100% Arabica high quality coffee. * The music they play at Elcy's is horrible. They are either playing 1990s pop country (Garth Brooks, Shania Twain) or gyno-centric adult alternative (Indigo Girls?). I realize that Glenside is not a hipster haven, for which I am glad, but a marginally better musical selection would help. * The décor and design of the place is irredeemably cheesy. I think there is an attempt to look retro, but it comes off as ill-conceived, sentimental, and artificial (like the lobby of a Cracker Barrel). A real investment in aesthetics, comfortable seating, functionality, attractive lighting, and color would be really helpful. * Elcy's has very limited hours. The bulk of their business comes from commuters using SEPTA during rush hour, so I think they see no need to stay open in the evenings. Perhaps if they improved the quality of their coffee and physical space, Elcy's could become a destination, and not just a place you happen upon en route to catching the train. I get the impression that the management at Elcy's has no clue about the aforementioned problems with their establishment (most of which could be easily improved). This is really a shame, because this has the potential to be a really awesome coffee shop. Instead, Elcy's will continue to sell bad coffee, play bad music, and offer an unattractive space to undiscerning suburban commuters. read more

Unlike Carrie, I've made many, many visits to Elcy's. I've lived through its evolution since it opened around 2001, and I love the place. As a quintessential community hang-out, it has few peers. Granted, the fact that the owners shoe-horned their tidy little operation into a 19th century train station shouldn't count against them in any way. In fact, it adds to its charm in my estimation. Food wise, I've watched its menu improve over time. Lately, it's rounded out its selections with fresh-made, healthy soups, generous salads, and an astounding array of desserts, which change from day-to-day. I'm a big fan of the wraps here, especially the chicken salad, but they also serve up a wonderful roast-beef hoagie-like sandwich that a buddy of mine orders every time we visit -- which is now weekly. I do wish they had some better items for kids. I love to bring my daughter there (she's four), but aside from the grilled cheese, there's not too much she'll go for. Give her a couple more years. The wifi came only a year or so ago, and yes, the place could use a few more outlets, but when I first visited the place, I could only find one and now it has several. Most of the seating here could hardly be described as plush. Bench, chairs, and tables account for just about all the space. While technically a coffee shop, Elcy's really falls more into the quaint luncheonette category these days, though they still offer a full complement of coffee drinks and the best smoothies you'll find anywhere -- and I've looked. Yes, I do wish they had a little more control over the music selection. Country music does NOT belong in a coffee shop anywhere north of Mississippi, but most of the time, the owners and their employees play some interesting tunes to go along with your meal. The other thing that should be mentioned is that Elcy's serves an amazing Sunday breakfast -- not to be missed if in the area. I live around here, so I can say this with some authority. A truly great breakfast is hard to find in Philly's north suburbs, but Elcy's serves a great one -- even if they only do it on Sundays. read more

1st fri was super busy and fun. BYOB! It was great to see so many people there listening to the band and enjoying themselves. Despite the crowd and minimal wait staff, service was fine. They hustle and smile and really try to do it right. Very much appreciated. We were in no hurry so a little wait did not bother us. They didn't even ask the 3 gabby college girls with empty paper coffee cups taking up a table to move along even though diners were waiting for tables - so everyone is welcome and can feel relaxed. I guess if you were doing the waiting, it might matter, but I've been in places that rush you out as soon as you finish, to seat others. That was not the case here, especially since the girls only had take out coffees. Chicken vegg salad was fab. Full of chicken lightly heated as requested. Fresh ingredients and lots of them. Ronster sanwich, heated = good! Brownie and rasberry crumble w whipped cream was super. I love fresh baked goods and these did not disappoint. Low key, funky interior reminded me of the best bohemian coffee houses and cafes in Brooklyn. Don't drink coffee so can't comment on that but hubby says it's weak, especially if you like Starbucks. La Colombe would be a welcome addition and local. More (and newer) pillows are needed on the benches. It IS an old train station, so the quirkiness is expected and fun but the benches are hard and the minimal pillows don't do much for comfort. My ass was aching when I stood up. Smack me in the head for not coming here until now. I shudder to try & calculate how many smoothies I missed out on. That's about to change. read more

Elcys is a great neighborhood coffee shop with both great coffee drinks (latte, cappuccino, etc) and straight up coffee for purists made from fresh locally roasted beans. The owners also own Valley Green Coffee Co., which supplies Elcys. A large black Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from Elcys remains the best coffee I've had anywhere. Unfortunately, the beans aren't available year-round. Try their breakfast sandwiches on a Saturday and enjoy the unique, intimate and classy atmosphere. For a healthier option, try the yogurt parfait with great homemade granola. read more

Elcy's is a family-run restaurant at Glenside's train station. They have great breakfast and great lunch. For lunch, their sandwiches are very unique and very good. The Reggie, the Ronster, and the GiGi are all good. I have not had any of the others. Also, we started off with the Nosh, which is a good app that will satisfy most groups. Elcy's has great options for Vegetarians. I am not vegetarian, but it is something that my wife and I noticed. Elcy's has great smoothies and an outstanding coffee list! Elcy's gets 4-stars b/c their take-out is painfully slow. It was almost like they forget that people are standing there waiting for their food. Elcy's has limited seating, so if there is a rush, then good luck trying to find a seat. They have a couple tables outside for the nicer weather days. read more

Went there with my Jewish girlfriend, was an awesome place with a great atmosphere it almost made me want to be a local in glenside so I could commute just so I had a place like that to sit in and wait for my train. The food was great and the coffee also was AMAZING!!!! The only downside to this AMAZING place was the large painting by the bathroom. From a distance it looked like a beautiful piece of abstract work but upon further inspection, you can notice a plethora of what appears to be SWASTIKAS!! All in all 9.9 out of 10.
