    The Bradley Estate 5/2016

In honor of their 125th anniversary, the Trustees hosted a historic open house day, "Home Sweet Home" on May 21 at nine of their properties. I headed over to the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in the afternoon, sadly missing the scheduled guided tours earlier in the day. But I made it just in time for the last cupcake, which I enjoyed while listening to the singing and piano playing performed by students of a local music school. The second floor was closed off, but I took myself around the ground floor for a little self-guided tour. Sizewise, the house is relatively average for today, but for the period it was built, it was large. Generally, the house is closed except for events such as weddings, but the grounds are open to the public, so I might have to come back to visit with Rudy again sometime - the red llama that kept walking back and forth along his wooden fence, frustrating his public who strived to get photos of him and with him. Me, I finally just stayed put and was able to snap a few good shots when he meandered past me once again. The grounds were pretty, but I didn't go too far from the house on this visit. Perhaps another time, I'll tackle their paths with a friend. I saw these large bugs flying about as I walked on the grass, so some bug spray may be warranted.

Went here for Winter Lights. The lights are beautiful (12.5 miles of lights) and there is music playing outside that makes it more festive and fun. There is a short (.5 mile?) trail outside with lights and little reindeer (the tiny, decorative ones made from a log of wood) to find around the outside. There was a fire pit and hot cocoa outside, it was very relaxed. The staff were super nice and friendly despite the fact that some of them had prob been outside in the cold for hours! This historic mansion is a GREAT alt. to crowded zoos where it takes an hour just to get in and out of the parking lot!

This place is a memory factory. A historic Georgian-style mansion on a gorgeous ninety acres, the Bradley Estate is a spectacular setting to please all types of brides. The Party Animal: Throw up a tent on the landscaped lawn as a beer hall, blast some beats in the loggia and boogie the night away. The Hippie: Trek through the wooded area to a sunny glade, holding hands followed by your barefoot loved ones. After the ceremony, romp with the llamas and sheep in their corral. (Dork variation: yell "Tina, eat yer food" while doing so.) The Victorian: Arrange for vows to be exchanged in the impeccably manicured back garden. Pose by the fountain. Reception to follow in the formal dining room. The Alpinist: Marry in January during a fine blizzard. Throw snowballs instead of rice. Wind down by the fireplace to Bach on the baby grand.

Finally getting around to reviewing our wedding vendors, figured I'd start with the venue since that was the jumping off point for everything else. I randomly found the Estate on a list of venues on the magic interweb. It was love at first sight for me, but the hubby was weary of the price. I convinced him to go look at it and again he had initial reservations thinking it was too 'grand'. I set up an appointment for a tour and hoped for the best. The place blew us away. It's obviously a grand 1800's farming estate but inside it feels like a normal home, a large, expensive home, but a home nonetheless. We checked out a few places but nothing matched the Bradley Estate. We actually changed the date of our wedding to match a date that was still available because we loved it so much. The fact that it's owned by the Trustees of Reservations is a huge bonus as well. Beverly-Ann is the main coordinator and was a great help. She kept us focused on a time frame and was great with communicating each step. There was a little misunderstanding about our dog being able to be at the wedding, but in the end it all worked out. Even if you're not having a wedding at the Estate it's still a great place to hang out, the views are amazing, the garden is great for picnics. And there are some hiking trails around the property that offer some low to medium intensity treks through the woods. During the summer there is also a 'farmers market' setup on the property with produce grown on the Estate. It's run on the honor system so you don't have to worry about getting there before they close. The Bradley Estate is a magical place that will always be special to us, I look forward to visiting it for many years to come. In the end I would have gladly paid double the fee to have our wedding there.

We fell in love with her, the house, everything including the murder-by-mail story behind the house from the 1800s. About 2 weeks before the party we called Kaitlyn and told her it was going to turn into our surprise wedding! She continued to be so helpful and excited, giving recommendations for all kinds of vendors we'd need. The day of the party she was professional and hands-on, making sure everything got done on a quick timeline. She calmed nerves and had great suggestions on where things should go to make sure everything flowed just right. Our rental price included some tables and linens she had available, and some glassware too. It was so perfect from the start and we couldn't be happier!!

Beautiful historic building who's tour guides added in a true life murder mystery of the lady of the houses death. This really added to the event as it was so my scene and absolutely fun. They also had a whiskey tasting since she was poisoned with whiskey which is ironically amazing. I would def host an event here because unlike the Newport mansions I could touch things and see things in the midst of being historically preserved since they're still restoring the house. Open Doors RI has found a new regular customer :)

There's a lot of interesting and good information, and I liked the people. But.... The first half of the tour is in an old mini bus. The bus has tiny windows, like 4" square, and no air circulation. No fans. No air conditioning. Today was nearly 90 out by 10 am, when our tour started, and temperatures inside the bus got so hot that stepping out felt cool! You don't travel far, and then they stop for 10 minutes to talk about what's out the window. It's brutal. Ironically, the travel distances are so slim most people could walk it. But, just sitting on the bus in the heat? Yuck. The second half is in an old shed where you learn about harvesting. Again, it could be interesting, but it's a good 10° hotter, even with the fans going, and it makes it hard to focus. Or even listen. Better weather would have helped. But, we had an old lady in our tour group nearly pass out, and the guide indicated that that was not uncommon. Heck, complimentary water would be nice. Waters are a dollar. The tour is fifteen. It's all cash only.
