3 reasons I will not return to Electric City: 1. They billed me more than I authorized them to bill. 2. They didn't call me when my turntable was ready. Twice. It was in their shop for a total of 6 weeks and I had to call them both times to ask if it was ready. 3. My turntable was returned to me with a new problem. I dropped my Dual 1019 turntable off in late July because it was a little squeeky and sometimes the motor didn't kick on right away. I suspected it needed a lube job and maybe a new motor. I was asked to authorize up to $120 in repairs (my invoice literally says "customer authorized up to $120 total") and they said "we'll call you if it needs anything beyond that." The sign behind the counter said the estimated repair time for turntables was currently 2 weeks. Three weeks passes and I don't hear anything. After 3.5 weeks, I called and asked for an update. The guy says, "Oh let me look at the shelf here. Yeah, it looks done." Who knows how long it was sitting there waiting for me to pick it up. A simple call or email would have been nice. When I picked it up, they told me it was a total of $180. Listen, I understand that repairing vintage turntables is hard work, and it takes time. And I don't know how to do it myself, so I need to pay someone else. But how are you going to explicitly tell me that you won't charge me more than $120 and then look at me with a straight face and ask for $180? Problem could've been solved by calling and saying, "Hey, it looks like your turntable needs XYZ and it's going to be a little more expensive than expected. Is that okay?" When I took the turntable home, the auto-return wasn't working. This was a brand new problem. The auto-return had never been an issue before I dropped it off with Electric City. So I called them and they told me to drop it off again and "we'll move it to the front of the line." Fast forward two weeks and I haven't heard anything from Electric City. I sent them an email to ask about it. The response: "Yes, we checked that one out pretty good and three of us tested it several times. We did not find any problems with it. It is ready to be picked up any time." Why didn't you call me to tell me it was ready? Do you just assume people will call you and ask? They get a star for at least getting the job done eventually, but everything else about this place was very disappointing. read more

This store is excellent! I called them randomly on a Friday evening after googling "hi fi stores" and they were happy to listen to my audio issues, offered suggestions, and were patient and kind. I visited the next day and got quick, courteous service; I walked out with an impeccable receiver for my 50 yr-old speakers and the whole thing sounds like a dream. 10/10 would recommend. You have to be careful cause many are warped or scratch but I've always look through the bins and found something worth buying for a dollar that really wasn't that bad of shape. I have a unit known as a "compressor" used in pro audio situations. My unit failed one day for unknown reasons. I am somewhat knowledgeable in electronics repair, I can use a multimeter and a soldering iron, read schematics, etc. I had looked around inside my unit but didn't see anything obviously blown or out of place. I figured for the $35 bench charge Electric City has, it was worth it rather than hunt down the right tools. Electric City was pleasant to work with, I have no issue with their phone or customer service. The two weeks I waited would have been fine if they had to order parts, or there was a backlog after they'd looked at it, etc.. The reason for two stars is that my unit was kept for two weeks, and then I got a phone call. I was told that they had gone through the unit thoroughly but simply couldn't find the problem. I was told that if I could find them a schematic, they might have more luck. On the surface, this is true, and many companies keep their maps closely guarded secrets for just this reason - they don't want their gear reverse-engineered. If there were something wrong in the circuitry, without a map and correct values, it could take a LONG time to test and map out the circuits. This would rightfully cost hundreds in repair costs. However, the issue in mine would have been found immediately if they had simply tested voltage in the power supply, probably the first thing anyone would do upon opening the case. The power supply was blown. A bit more difficult (but well within a $35 "bench charge" would be unsoldering one end of a capacitor and testing it once they found that voltage was non-existent on one or more of the power rails. The repair ended up being two power supply capacitors and a voltage regulator. Simple. If I had simply kept my unit and found my multimeter and soldering tools buried in storage, I'd have diagnosed this and fixed it in about 20 minutes. I appreciate that they didn't proceed to tack on more costs in an effort to milk me further. However, I'm wondering how many other people are charged $35 for a "thorough inspection" which doesn't even include the use of a multi-meter, apparently. Not impressed, I'll go elsewhere in the future. read more

I purchased a turntable and a couple of speakers from them a few months ago. After a while, I noticed that the turntable was too fast and it really started to get on my nerves while listening to my records. I took it in, they confirmed that it was definitely going too fast, and they promised to have it done in a couple of days free of charge. When I mentioned that I lived pretty far away, they took it to the back and got it repaired immediately. Excellent customer service and I'll be going back there for all of my electronic needs! Took my sx850 pioneer receiver into electric city and spoke to a young lady who had a pretty good idea what was wrong. After a few minutes an associate of hers came out and confirmed her analysis. They recommended a good cleaning and the main power supply to be rebuilt. The estimated time to repair was two weeks. The estimated cost was 60.00 for cleaning and a additional 90.00 to rebuild power supply. I received my receiver back in 10 days and the cost was what they said. Took a Marshall Amp in for what I thought would be something minor, JTM30 combo amp, they have a history of over heating and mine was getting hot. The amp performed great, sounded awesome, just when it got really hot the over all volume would drop a little...as a whole, not one or the other channels. Also took a sec for the sound to stop after turning it off, or putting on standby. Took the Amp to these guys, took them several days, but they called said amp was done.......picked up amp, they installed a new rectifier and a heat sync, re done some solder around a power tube socket After a few days I plugged in the amp......the volume on the clean channel was normal, sounds good, but the volume on the gain channel was not even half as loud as the clean......this is 30 watts tube, it is fairly loud. So I take it back.....got the could be this, or could be that......couple days go by, I go in and amp is done, rectifier was bad, said they tested everything, all good, volume is going to be a little bit different on each channel(usually not much, pretty easy to balance both channels out).......couple of days after I picked up the amp, we were laying down some tracks, I plugged in the JTM......again, very little volume on the gain channel....clean was clear and loud.....the amp was on well over an hour and got just as hot as it did before I took it in......So I paid these guys to basically install a used heat sync from something else, that did no good, and the amp is not operating as it did when I took it in??? Really? So I talk to them again, I get the classic response....."well there must be something else wrong with it" are you kidding me?? I am upper mgmt in an auto repair shop.....you should of found the problem and fixed it RIGHT the first time, I have to seriously question the ability of this shop......I can understand why people get upset over the auto industry and mechanic that screw them around, because I sure as hell felt like this dealing with these people....the sad part about it is.......they are really nice people. I will not be taking anything else back to them again, and I own a LOT of equipment.....I will not recommend them either......2 stars is beyond being nice. read more
