So, I don't have remotely complicated or strong opinions on getting my hair cut - I'd just always gone to the cheapest chain haircut place that happened to be near me, when I moved to downtown Long Beach a decade ago, that was Fantastic Sam's. They always did a perfectly good job... until they closed a couple years ago. Now spoiled on being able to get my hair cut without having to drive across town, last year I looked around for a local alternative. While I do miss paying ~$10 less for a haircut (a basic men's cut, last time I was here, was $35), it is also nice feeling that I'm supporting a local business instead of a multinational one, and that doesn't feel like an unreasonable price for the personal attention you get. Everyone there's always super friendly, and I do always get great results (not that I could tell the difference, as long as it was short enough - but my wife can, and she says it's been great). And it is definitely a chiller, less sterile-feeling environment than that Fantastic Sam's. Less irritating music than a Fantastic Sam's, too. I was sad the first time I showed up though, having seen one review from 2022 where a customer was offered Oban... the most recent time I got my hair cut here, I was not offered any alcoholic beverages while I was waiting. The first time I showed up here, I was offered a can of Budweiser or some equivalent macro beer, which is admittedly more than you'd ever be offered at Fantastic Sam's or Supercuts, but still, definitely not Oban. (Not dinging them for that, obviously - while a barbershop that also had a scotch menu sounds like a great business model, they certainly didn't promise me any :D. Just commenting, that one review from 2022 is not indicative of the average experience.) read more

Artie is my Go To Barber at Electric Empire. I've been following Artie from Garden Grove and Santa Ana. He's definitely one of the best barbers. Artie is very hospitable with his clients. Although he specializes in Traditional Men's cuts he's very adaptable to new cuts as well. I also think that Artie invests a good amount of time insuring that your cut will exceed your expectations. He has great attention to detail and really the end product shows when he hands you the mirror. If you're looking for a new barber in Long Beach, Ca I'd highly recommend Artie. A good barber is very hard to find nowadays. Give him a shot and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Worst thing that can happen is your hair grows back and you don't visit him again. LOL. Apparently the owner (Jesse, i think?) use to be some kind of artist which is evident when you visit (very rockabilly), tunes were excellent, friendly conversation and barbers on staff were very welcoming and friendly. Best barber in the LBC and all of LA County. Found Drew when my normal barber bailed on an appointment and man did I get lucky. Perfect shave and cut each time. Whether it takes an hour or more Drew doesn't rush through anyone. He's a true artist and loves what he does. Plus the shop is retro with a big screen and great tunes playing. Got a couple cuts from Evan in the past. First was solid. Second I had to even out when I got home. But the real reason that I won't be going back is because the last time I was in the shop, every guy there - both barbers and the three or four dudes who were just sitting around drinking beer - stopped what they were doing to catcall two teenaged girls who were just walking down the sidewalk minding their own business.
