A few weeks ago, I set out to seek advice on selecting a fast-growing, shade tree. Cindy gave me tons of information (consistent with an earlier discussion with my arborist) about trees that would meet my needs, including expectations, routine care/watering, and a health regimen. I was very impressed with Cindy's knowledge, and her passion for plants and trees was evident. Every nursery would benefit from having such an expert on staff. Many thanks, Cindy! Also, I love that I can get TRAILING vinca at this nursery. This is the only place I've found this plant. Home Depot had some vinca labeled as trailing habit, but it did not grow in that fashion. I'll continue to use Elgin for these plants which survive our summer heat so well. read more

After visiting a Lowes and 2 other large nurseries I was able to find a jacaranda tree at a reasonable price. The tree was healthy and strong. The staff were very helpful in selecting and loading the tree for the drive home. read more

Great selection of plants and such but if you're looking for any sense of good customer service go elsewhere . I went in (hoping to support a local business rather then Lowe's) ..confused and not knowing anything about different types of soils for certain plants because I'm new to gardening . While walking around obviously extremely confused and two kids that wouldn't sit still , two employees at the counter closest to me just watched as I was losing my mind with my kids . Not once asked me if I needed help finding anything or if needed advice . Just stared at me , obviously annoyed . I had to go up to the counter and ask for help . I learned two things that day don't bring kids where you need to concentrate and don't return to this nursery . read more

We bought six trees from Elgins. We also had them plant these trees. We also warned them that it is a VERY hard dig since they had to blast to get our pool in. They came and they dug and dug and dug a bit more, they never complained or tried to charge us more for having to take much longer than they had anticipated. All of the trees survived well and so did a lot of our other plantings with advice from them on how to take care of and remedy any current worries. I only spent a little over two hundred dollars on two citrus trees, two trumpet vines, and some supplies. In exchange I have received information that is priceless in the form of telephone support, advice on what and what not to plant, and best of all incredibly healthy plants that survived the winter while I was away in the South Pacific despite no protective covering for the two worst weeks. Literally following the advice given has resulted in my Improved Meyer Lemon tree setting fruit after blossoming, and the same for my Arizona Sweet Orange tree also purchased from Elgin. I wish to note that when I initially decided to plant citrus last fall the "Citrus Specialist" at a large valley nursery chain informed me that "I've had an Improved Meyer Lemon for four years and never gotten a single lemon off the tree." Not only was the advice at Elgin better, but so were the trees being sold and for a better price to boot. Had it not been for Elgin's superior knowledge and ethics, this neophyte to citrus and the Valley might have had a much more dismal experience. I would not go anywhere else in AZ for plants, period. read more

Been coming here for almost 2years. In the past I have picked up a number heirloom seeds; different types beans Sweet Corn Tomato (I recommend Purple Tomatillo) lettuce Cantaloupe Cucumber (I recommend Space Monsters) My recent purchases; Chocolate Mint Sweet Bell Peppers Pak Choi Anaheim Pepper, Broccoli Cauliflower Everything is growing great and is delicious. Not the biggest nursery in town, not the biggest selection but what they have is nice. Their prices are comparable or better than other nurseries. It is always a pleasant visit. Dog friendly too. read more

This is where I like to go to get my plants. Sure you can go to Home Depot or lowes and the plants might be a little cheaper. But here I can find very nice plants, that have been well taken care of. The staff is also very knowledgeable and will spend as much time as you need answering questions and giving you advice. That is what makes it my top choice. I can never find anyone to ask questions to at the big box stores and if I do, they really don't know much. I also like the plant selection here. They have a great variety and plants I have never seen before. Please check them out for your gardening needs. Support your local business! read more

This place is AWESOME. The people working there are "down home" friendly and just good people. They go out of their way to help you and there are no sleazy sales tactics. Most important is that they have GORGEOUS trees and bushes here at the very BEST prices! Do not go to Moon Valley where they are deceptive and rip you off. The customer service at this place is terrible! Having a contractor's license allows you to buy plants at wholesale cost. I normally buy from other wholesale nurseries around the valley but decided to spend my money on a west side business. What a mistake that was! I had called and asked pricing on a few items, but was told I could also stop by and order/pick up if I chose to. I ran by today to grab the ~$500-$1000 in plants and was met by the most arrogant asshole lady I've ever met in the green industry! She was probably 55-60, grayish hair, and had the most smug and holier than thou attitude as I was asking questions on which plants I wanted to buy. I tired of her attitude quickly and decided to take my business elsewhere! Don't spend your money at this dump unless you want to be belittled by this lady! read more

Not a good place. Sold me dwarf oleanders when I made it CLEAR what I was trying for in my backyard. They don't care about anything except for the $. Lowe's and Home Depot Warranty their plants with or without a receipt. Their system can track back. This company is a risk. be willing to buy and be doen whether it dies or they sell you the wrong thing. They will NOT fix their problems ever. So disappointed. Really bought the whole spiel of how great they are. Also they said the OWNER NEVER gets involved so they are trained as gatekeepers. Buyer beware. read more

I needed a bunch of herb plants to make into a planter. Also I bought a cement cat to tuck into a corner where my cat liked to hide. I also bought a plant to fill in a corner. Elgin's staff gave some hints to help me be more successful. I also love their selection of tin sculptures and the little stone and wire ant sculptures. read more

You know, I love this place. Some stuff is a little pricey, but for veggie transplants, flowers, etc. They are great and the service is awesome. You can tell these guys are passionate about what they do. Also, I like the selection. I always see plants that are new to me here. It's worth the drive. Did I mention their large trees are quite reasonable as well and they have a nice selection of desert plants. read more

The worst custermer service. Purchase 2 trees and was told transport in my truck, "they will be fine", by the staff. One tree all the leaves wilted by the time I get home, never came back. I live an hour away, so yes they will replace it. Found a tree at my local lowes and checked with them first as to getting a refund and not an exchange and was told yes. So purchased tree at Lowes. Call to send the pic and reciept to get refund and "policy" says they only do exchanges....they won't honor what I was told. So now I have to drive an hour there and back again, to get another tree, which I don't need now. Explained what I was told and they tell me none of there employes recall a converstion like that, how convenient. And "policy" says they only do exchanges...the owner can't change the "policy"?! Horrible custermer service from the day I bought the trees. The owner and the staff only care about getting your money and sending you on your way. read more

I've lived near Tolleson for a year. Been to Moon Valley, Summer Winds, Home Depot and even Walmart. I am not an expert at gardening in zone 9, and in my experimentation to see what works here, I haven't been picky where the plant comes from. Until now. Now, I am a committed customer to Elgin. I was there this weekend on a desperate search for pepper plants. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful - a nice change of pace compared to many local competitors I spoke to - and the plants are well tended. Even better, for as much as I would pay for a plant indifferently cared for at Home Depot, I got two of the same size and quality here. Now, as they've just been planted in their containers, my jalapenos and yolo wonders have a ways to go before I enjoy Elgin's product, but if experience thus far is any indication, Elgin's plants will perform well on the table. Hooray for great nurseries! This one made our landscaping purchase so much easier on us and on our wallet. I brought in a sketch of our yard on a piece of paper and Yvonney helped me design it. He drew pictures of the spots where each plant should go and then toured the nursery for the right "look." I was so grateful for his design skills and making it look amazing. Also, Cindy was the expert of all plants and trees. When we were wanting the right color green and height of plant she took us to the parking lot to see the most perfect tree. We had never seen this type of tree and we're so excited to add it to our yard. Thanks a ton for a great experience, will definitely recommend them. read more

Best nursery I've been to. Great healthy looking plants. I found out they grow their own here in the valley. Nice manageable size nursery, not huge and overwhelming. Employees offer to help you. Stephanie knows how to provide good customer service starting with her welcoming voice on the phone and then helping me pick out the best of the shrubs. Also they have a beautiful selection of pots that I've not seen elsewhere and fountains too. Elgins has a lot of desert plants that are absent at other nurseries. I'm happy to find this place and will be back for sure. read more

Went here after visiting a Moon Valley. The prices here are amazing and the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. We spent 30 minutes trying to find someone to talk to at Moon Valley, showed up at Elgin and within 5 minutes we were discussing our plant needs. We bought 2 palms, a canary island palm and a Mediterranean fan palm. The employee explained how to plant it, how to water it, how to fertilize it and how to care for it. He also stated they had a one year policy on all their plants so if they died we would get new ones. I appreciated all the help! Great place. They had a good selection of local plants, knowledgeable staff and great prices. Thank you!! read more

This is the best nursery by far that I have visited in the Valley. Honest, knowledgeble staff. I especially like the slightly eclectic Jacob. Great variety of plants & trees, all well cared for & healthy. They also run some great deals & offer informative classes. Out of the way for me, but I was curious. The guys there were eager to help but left you alone enough that you can look around. Not as wide of a selection as maybe some of the other nurseries but they had plenty of the things I came in for. The pricing all seems to be about the same whether you go to summerwinds, home depot, elgin, moon valley....you may save a dollar or two on one item but something else will be a little higher. I'd bet it all works out the same. read more

Excellent first impression...amazing service! We were left alone a bit to wander the property & get some ideas...and then approached by employee Nick! Nick listened to what we were looking for, asked fact finding questions to get a feel for what we wanted and asked specific questions about size. He showed us several options & really took into consideration what we were looking for as far as blooms, shedding, overgrowth, non ground cover etc. Can't say enough about the time he spent on us ( in 110' weather!) walking from one end to the other and showing us different aged trees of the same kind. We walked out with 2 trees and 5 bushes and will be back for more this weekend! He also helped load our vehicle and told us how to properly plant our items so they don't go into shock. If I could give more stars I certainly would! :) ps....we visited Moon Valley Surprise and would never go back. They did not want to listen nor take a walk to physically show us items...they did alot of pointing and sitting. Definitely treated like customers are a dime a dozen. Don't waste your time with these people. After securing pricing for a very large order, they would not take a credit card over the phone. Even though the plants were to be delivered to our winter home and our gardener would be accepting them. Time to get a little more progressive Elgin!!! read more

I bought 4" tomato and pepper plants for about 1/2 the price of the Bonney's sold at the big box stores and picked up the Topsey Turvey planters at Dollar Tree to plant them in and WOW! did they take off,picking nice fruit every day. Also bought some Lantanas which are also doing well.Great quality and price and selection too. read more
