Not gonna lie, this place is an absolute gem that I didn't even really think to go into since moving to Uptown. My friend and I were walking by and she looked at it for a second and asked if we could go in. We went in and I was impressed. The prices here are insane (in a good way). So many products and even more name brand items that you wouldn't expect to be at phenomenal prices. It seems to be owned by some Korean family and they were nice to us, but based off of some of the reviews I can't speak for other people's experiences. I was pretty disappointed, they are very racist. I think their selection of hair is okay, not amazing but what makes me give them one star is they follow you around and stare at you like you are going to steal something. Also, I have a little anxiety, so the first time I went in, I left after 15 minutes, I felt so uncomfortable. After calming down I tried to go back in a few days later. The same thing, they kept watching and following me, and I spent at least $300.00. Didn't matter. Lastly, I witnessed a fight between the manager and a long-time customer with two cute kids. She was saying they treat her poorly every time and can't defend them any longer. It was really sad. They told us that the store was for women and that we were not welcome there because we made the other real women in the store (all two of them) uncomfortable. I am appalled at their blatant discrimination against the LGBT community and I urge you to not shop at (boycott) a business that practices illegal discrimination like this. When Halloween came aruond this year, I seemed to be unmotivated to get my costume together until....well...October 31st. So, I headed to a couple of those pop-up-shop places in Lincoln Park but they only had wigs left in crazy colors or styles. I really just wanted a long blonde or red wig that looked somewhat like a real hairstyle (the plan was to be either Sookie or Arlene in their Merlotte's get-up). Luckily for me, a girl working at one of these places recommended I go to a wig and beauty shop in Uptown. She did not send me to Elim but a place nearby that was more expensive and had real hair wigs. Not what I had in mind for Halloween. Frankly, real hair wigs kind of freak me out. There's something "it puts the lotion on its skin" about them that I can't handle. But I was strolling up Broadway to head to Border's when I came across this place. Wow. I have never experienced anything quite like it. They have a TON of wigs and clip on hair and tracks and caps and you name it. There are several things that I loved. You can try wigs on before buying them (you have to wear a wig cap of course). Once you get a wig on, they will cut it for you. I found a great red wig with curls and length like I wanted but said I wished it had bangs. "No problem - we will cut it for you!" For reals?!?! Take that, Halloween Hallway! The price was reasonable but not cheap. It was $40 for the wig but I am willing to pay a little more in order to be able to try it on first AND have them cut it to my specifications. I will definitely be heading here for any future fake hair needs. read more

I have been shopping here for years and on Saturday January 23rd myself and 7 other men shopping for wigs were asked to leave. I was really shocked that this happened to us. It was very unfortunate that the manager/owner or whatever her title is decided to handle the situation like she did. One of the two customers in the store felt uncomfortable shopping for wigs with men around. So she told us this store is for women and asked us to leave. So today me and 7 of my friends came in to shop for wigs and other pieces for an upcoming show. Being a drag queen I've come in here quite a few times because the prices are decent. This will be the last time I step foot in this store. I was told by an associate who worked in the store that I had to leave because I was "scaring away" the women in the store who were coming to buy wigs. First of all customers are customers regardless if they are male or female. No one should feel discriminated against in any place of business. Secondly there was only 2 other women in the store who weren't even looking at wigs. I'm not one to sit and write a nasty comment but this really upset me. I was planning on spending a good deal of money in there as were the 7 of my friends. But guess what... I'll take my money where I'll be respected and treated like any other customer. They lost out on a couple hundred dollars for 2 women in the store who most likely didn't even buy anything anyway or cared that we were there....oh but we scared them away. No baby your bad customer service is what scares them away! I would encourage other drag queens and trans women not to shop here. I love merchandise in this crazy store. What I do not love is being followed around the store like I'm about to steal a bunch of $3 cubic zirconia goodies. I know that this particular part of Uptown is known for crazies. Exibit A: I saw a woman peeing next to the store in broad daylight, and anyone familiar with the area knows the shenanigans I'm talking about. No offense to the normal peeps living here, I love the area and lived in Uptown for years. Still an excuse to treat every customer like a criminal. They sell everything, starting with wigs, blinged out fake jewelry, ending with gold leggings and breast pasties. They have a very impressive selection of wigs. I have been to this store twice since Covid and they are always helpful. I usually order my hair from Amazon, but Im tired of getting tricked by inaccurate photos. I order the thinking it's going to look like the photo and it shows up looking different. Some I'm just going to buy my hair from Elim from now on. Shopping here makes me uncomfortable. Not sure what I have to do to not feel like a criminal here.There is always a staff member right behind my back and I've never stolen anything in my life from anywhere. I don't think the staff trailing behind me is personal because I come here about every 3 months and I know they don't even remember me out of all the women they see everyday, I don't stand out one bit( I know this because I cant even distinguish each female staffmember from another). Feels weird being here, like they are not sincere in helping you they just want to make sure you don't steal based off of no previous interaction you've had with them. So What are they judging me based off of then? I recommend installing cameras instead of following people because Elim will lose business from racial and gender discrimination. I come here for beauty supplies--as you may have guessed. Basiclly this is your typical well stocked beauty supply store. They sell everything from rings and stockings to wigs and headbands. Regarding their accessories: they range from cheap headbands, ouchless bands, and duck clips. Standard things at standard prices. Their clips and combs range from 2-3 bucks. In regards to products they carry tried and true crap that is loaded with parbens, silicones, mineral oil and cheap fillers that create the look without the health. They are starting to branch out by caring mixed chicks conditoners, shea butter and a few other lines following the healthy hair trend but their selection is smaller and higher priced than nearby target. I don't buy hair here ( or anywhere) but their prices are high and can be easily beaten by an online vendor. Think of this as beauty accessory dollar and up store: plan to get your plastic stuff and leave. read more

This is a great place to find moderately priced wigs of good quality. This is my second purchase of a wig from Elim Wig & Beauty supply, and I am very pleased with it. As a bonus, they carry a lot of things that could be used for stocking stuffers for $1.00 and up, also really good quality knee high hose for $1-1.99 each. I love this beauty supply. I have a few go to places that I have found around the city and this is one of my favorites. I live on the westside, but I work in lakeview (and lived in the area for a while and I also attended Loyola which is only a few el stops away), and this place was a God-send. They always have what I need, and I must admit I always leave with more than I intended to just because they have so much good stuff! Hair, body, accesories...it's all covered. The prices are good, you can usually find parking on the street, and if you're on public transit the CTA Red Line Wilson stop is right across the street. read more

A different employee walked over and yelled at me saying "this is a store for women, not men!". I was told to leave the store. I bought nothing and I left quietly. I moved up North not too long ago. I really love affordable Frontals but didn't think that any North side neighborhoods had good Beauty Supply stores. I used Google and found Elims Wig. To my surprise they had a very large selection of wigs. Even larger than the Beauty Supply stores in the Urban neighborhoods. I was impressed. They also was very reasonable with their prices and all of the wigs were in good shape and looked of quality. The lady in the wig department was helpful. She was patient and helped me found the perfect wig. It had been a week since my visit and my synthetic wig still looks brand new. I will be a regular here. The only thing I didn't like is the security at front door said Hey to me about 3 times. I guess that was his way of flirting? Idk, lol but other than that I had a great visit. I absolutely love coming here. Not just for the hair products but because they have an extensive selection of costume jewelry for about a dollar! They sell all kinds of make up and eyeliner for cheap. The atmosphere in the store usually feels fun. There's this one guy with a ponytail who has the BEST customer service, he knows so much about black hair care and is always willing to help. I wish I could give no stars. There was very poor customer service and very rude store owners. I bought a couple of tracks to make a wig and the hair matted up by my fluffing it (1-2 times). I've bought a premium blend of wefted hair before and it NEVER did anything like that. They wouldn't even give me an in-store exchange. I left the package of hair there just because I was so angry. They'll probably try to re-package it and sell it. I have never been so disrespected and belittled than when I experienced purchasing merchandise from this store. I went there today to find a wig last minute for a film production I am involved with. The staff was friendly as soon as I walked in the door. The selection of wigs was expansive. I found exactly what I needed and the staff was super friendly. When I left the store, their employee actually shoveled the snow on the sidewalk by my car so I could get in. This place is the shizzz! Came in here looking for some extensions and they have tons! Not the ones I was looking for (since they ran out of my color hair) but they have a huge selection. They have a great selection of wigs, which caters mostly to the black crowd but they do have some for others. Tried one on and loved it! It was fairly cheap too, $45. You have to buy a wig cap first which is 50 cents before you can try on any wigs. There is a lady who will help you try it on. There is a 3 wig try on limit so choose wisely. The gentleman there is very knowledgeable about extensions but be aware, he will try and sell you anything he can, but hey, that's his job right. The girls and I will be back! read more

Is so uncomfortable to shop when you have when of those ladies breathing on your neck althought most of the stuff is censor they still watch u n follow u around the store. I just want to say that I have been in this store shopping with gay men and women as well as trans men and drag queens. Not ONCE did I see anyone who worked for the store treat them any differently than another shopper. As a matter of fact when they are trying on wigs they are laughing and cracking jokes! So do not judge from ONE side of the story. Who knows these shoppers could have been rude, loud, refusing to check bags(you have to leave bags at the register and you get a ticket number once you are ready to leave). Last week I stopped in to see if I could get a wig to match my own hair before I start to lose it to Chemo. It is a short, light brown pixie. When I entered the store I asked the woman behind the counter if they had anything similar to my own hair. She waved her hand towards the back of the store and said maybe back there. Went to the back of the store and asked the woman there and she barely glanced at me and said we have nothing like that and turned her back on me. The girl putting stock up pointed to the top shelf and said maybe those wigs. The woman repeated that they had nothing. Now, maybe they didn't have a wig for me, but I could not believe the rude, dismissive and condescending attitude of the employees. If they were my employees I would fire them and if these women were the owners, shame on them. My money is better spent elsewhere read more

A great place for everyday wigs as they have a lot of them. Prices are good ~$30 for most basic stuff. Most of the inventory they carry is dark hair. They can order another color for you but it seems like a bit of a hassle. The lady there will trim the wig for you (for no extra charge, but tip her!) and she does a great job. read more
