Varicose veins showed up on my legs during my first pregnancy. They became subsequently worse with the following pregnancy. I became more and more self-conscious, always trying to cover them up, but they became so bad that the bulges eventually showed through my clothes. Soon enough, varicose veins were present on my lower legs too so I started looking for help to try to control them. I was sent by my primary care doctor to a specialist (who I won't name). The experience with this specialist was so impersonal. After his ultrasound tech very quickly scanned my legs, he came in and just started talking about what insurance might and might not pay for, how expensive it would be, and told me that because of my weight, varicose would likely just pop up again. I left the appointment feeling hopeless and ashamed, like I deserved to live with these veins because of my weight. But the truth is, I am active in sport and live a healthy lifestyle and have experienced weight shame with doctors since puberty. Yesterday I went in for what I thought would be a treatment for my spider veins. I had gotten a Groupon. I have had sclerotherapy before and thought I would know what to expect. When I got to the parking lot, I noticed I did not have my purse and I took a minute to look all the way through my car to make sure it wasn't there. Realizing I had probably dropped it on the street and my credit cards and cash were sitting out there for the taking along with my purse was upsetting, but I decided to go up for my appointment anyway. I was a few minutes late and on the way up there, the doctor himself called me and chastised me for being late. I was once a medical professional myself and would never have talked to anyone the way he talked to me on the phone, so I was a bit shaken up. When I came up he continued to lecture me about how they need to make sure their patients are seen on time and that my being late could affect that...on & on nagging even after I told him I lost my purse and I was quite upset by it and I also apologized for being late. Once I got in the room with him things did not get any better. I have had hypothermia and I have cold injuries so I asked for the room to be no lower than 65°. He asked me how the temperature was in a very sarcastic tone and later started interrogating me about my injuries, not taking into consideration that he has already scolded me for one thing and now he is basically only evaluating his liability and not even acting like a decent human being, let alone a health provider. It's not fun to have cold injuries and it's really unfortunate that he could not stop navel gazing long enough to realize that I might be traumatized both by losing my purse and now having to recount why I have cold injuries (almost died in the ocean). Almost the entire time he spoke to me he had his back turned to me and spoke down to me as if I were ignorant and beneath him. He almost never made eye contact with me and the look on his face was of disgust. I do believe that he has a lot of knowledge on the subject of veins and I actually did learn a couple of things but I have had enough of white men who have a lot of money talking to me like I am a piece of crap to last me a lifetime. If I had a penny for each time I had an experience with a white male "medical professional" who talked down to me or belittled me I would be a very rich woman. As a retired medical professional, it saddens me how far some medical folks have come from taking the Hippocratic oath and actually practicing healing medicine rather than actually harming a patient. I was not physically harmed but I was definitely emotionally slapped around and degraded. The beautiful thing is that when I came home, my purse ironically was still there and it had all of my stuff still in it. I did not have a lot of spider veins but prefer to be proactive and so I searched around and Dr Hyde seemed the most experienced - the only other one or two people I considered had retired a few months ago. I gathered you needed a doctor who needed to make sure you didn't have any underlying vascular issues and also a doctor who understood feeder veins (I think That's what they're called) to know the best course and application of treatment. Anyway, I was explained in great detail what to expect, and one was to expect around an 80% improvement in my legs - that's about exactly the results I could see (you must wait a few months to see results) and I'm very happy. The sides of my thighs are almost totally clear and the bigger green vein I had behind the back of my leg is almost totally gone (if not totally gone - still some bruising). Dr Hyde is very efficient and punctual but I wasn't hassled when I came 5min late or so thankfully, since it's just over an hour drive for me. I also found Dr Hyde very kind with good bedside manner but also very efficient with his time, so appointments were brisk in a good way. I went to this place and I was somewhat happy with the service. I never expected for the doctor to be RUDE and compare me to a child. I had missed an appointment (not intentionally) and apologized. As I checked out with the receptionist for my last visit (procedure) the receptionist told me, "okay your balance is $100. I asked what this was for and she replied, it is for the missed appointment". I asked her if the office would consider waiving it since I had only missed one appointment and don't make a habit of missing appointments. The doctor came out of the exam room and said to me directly, "will you be paying cash, credit.... Etc. I replied, sorry I didn't bring my purse with me in which he replied in the presence of his receptionist/assistant, " I can't believe you Are behaving like a child", " who doesn't bring their purse or wallet with them", that is childish behavior. I NEVER expected to be treated like this but I do recall reading another woman (potential patient) complaining about the similar demeanor that the doctor had expressed towards her. I realize NOW, a bit late that her post on YELP was a (RED FLAG) since i have NEVER been treated like this by any profesional medical doctor / Surgeon I was dumbfounded and failed to respond to his insult and defamatory remarks against me. For this reason I am writing this experience of mine to alert other "potential patients" to be aware of his rude and unprofessional behavior. Now there does exists "Ethics for doctors of medicine and surgeons. Perhaps he needs to take an entire course in profesional ethics towards patients. If I had known I was going to be treated this way with disrespect I would have gone to another vein specialist as I do have a choice through my insurance and there are plenty of doctors worthy of patients and the business they bring to any medical practice. About a year before seeing Dr. Hyde, I developed a varicose vein on the inside of my lower leg. With exercise, the bulging increased and I was self conscious. I stopped wearing shorts which made running and playing beach volleyball in the summer rather uncomfortable. I'm in the healthcare field and knew the bulging would not go away; the "one-way" valves in the veins were compromised and were no longer preventing back-flow. I felt anxious about the vein getting worse. I'm so glad I found and sought treatment with Dr. Hyde. He did a great job educating me on my issue, the procedure and what to expect. Dr. Hyde is has gone the extra mile so many times I don't know where to start. Anyone who has given him a negative review probably just doesn't understand his approach or has unrealistic expectations. He is very straight forward and doesn't gloss things over or make unrealistic promises...but he does sincerely care about his patients and has proven that to me time and time again. I came to him last year because my greater saphenous vein (the major superficial vein of the leg and thigh) was failing and causing me pain. I was also wanting to get pregnant soon and had heard horror stories from a friend who had the same vein issue and was in so much pain while she was pregnant that she had to be on bed rest for over 3 months!!! I wanted to get the procedure done fast so I could use it with that years insurance deductible-- and get my veins ready for pregnancy (you make 40% more blood!) I was amazed at how fast his team reached out to my insurance to get it approved. These things don't usually happen fast but they were able to get the procedure cleared by insurance and get me on the schedule in less than 24 hours! Leading up to the procedure Dr Hyde provided much more detail than most doctors do, from the expected outcome to risks and issues that may come up. I am one who researches these things and has a lot of questions. But if you just patiently listen, most every question will be answered before you even have the chance to ask. Love this level of detail. Knowing I wanted to get pregnant he was very clear to make sure that I gave myself enough recovery time so that I didn't add more risk. As an added bonus, he knew I sang jazz and so every time I would come in he would have it playing for me to help me relax. But it was after the procedure that I realized that he really cared. I have never had a doctor who takes time after hours to call and check up on you. But he did every time. I was blown away to have this kind of support. He also made himself available via phone or text after hours in case I experienced any issues or had any questions. When I did have a question, he always responded very quickly. This put my mind at ease. Not only does he know what he is doing (and does it well), he helps you understand it as well too. Update: I am now 2.5 weeks away from having our little girl and have to say that I have not had much pain at all. I have had many veins appear during pregnancy (which Dr. Hyde said would happen) but most of these should clear up after pregnancy. While I do have to sit and rest often the past few days, I was just talking to another girl who said she could barely stand for more than a minute the last month and a half. **I had posted the previous rating, and for some reason it was deleted on yelp, so here it is again: 12/4/2012 I had a procedure done in July for Varicose Veins, since then I have gone back for follow up draining. I can confidently say that most of the comments are true. Dr. Hyde is incredibly knowledgeable and will happily discuss his reasons/ intentions for each method and why it is imperative. I'm not going to lie, I also appreciate his dry sense of humor. His staff is super welcoming, in particular: Jane. Every time I call, she makes me feel like I am taken care of and more than just a chart. Her personality is such that she can remain professional, but you really always remember her warmth afterward. The assistants have a gentle demeanor, but I don't see that as a "stiffness"-- rather, a sensitivity to the range of clients that come in to see this office. I have been very impressed by the dynamic between Dr. Hyde and his assistants. He has high standards for them, which I value because I felt confident when during one drainage appointment Dr. Hyde wasn't even present. Also, there is a lot of hands on, so I asked a lot of questions, and never once did I detect a weakness/ apprehension coming from any of the girls. As far as the procedure: be patient, it's a process. Take walks. Eat healthy. As far as the office: every time you call, they will make time for you, kindly. This past spring I started to receive varicose veins in left leg that were leading to potential blood clots. I have continued to receive treatment from Dr. Hyde. As always, he is direct, intuitive, and communicative with his patients. He has since opened another office in San Francisco thus providing access to his services for individuals working in the city plus SF residents. Dr. Hyde is one of the pioneers of endovenous laser treatment in California which provides an improved strategy for dealing with varicose veins, spider veins, etc. The treatment is minimally invasive and relatively pain free. This is a viable alternative to the stripping method used by many of our HMOs. As a physician I was able to do some serious research on how best to treat my varicose veins. I knew I did not want to repeat the 3 failed surgical strippings my mom had in her forties. He is medical director of Elite Vein Specialists and all they do is nonsurgical vein treatments. I set up a consult and never mentioned I was a physician. I was very impressed that my consult began exactly on time and his staff was very knowledgeable and pleasant. Dr. Hyde spent about an hour with me which included an ultrasound of both my legs. He obviously is very passionate and experienced with these newer minimally invasive vein treatments. He carefully explained my treatment options and answered all my questions. He recommended endovenous laser ablation which he has been performing for about 9 years. Thankfully, he was also able to get my insurance to cover my procedure. I am about 1 month out from my treatment, which took Dr. Hyde about 1/2 an hour. It was painless and all done with just local anesthesia. It was done at his office at 8am, I walked for 30 minutes after procedure and I was back at my office by 9:30 to see my first patient. I could not be happier with my results. I contacted Elite Vein Specialist about a year ago to get treatment for my spider veins. The staff at the office was very friendly and great about giving thorough instructions for the appointment. Dr. Hyde is awesome. He gives great to the point descriptions of the procedure and it's results. He makes you feel comfortable and even makes small talk which is really nice :) The treatment is done with little needles that cause the veins to close and the body reabsorbs them. I have had the treatment done by other doctors in the past and found the treatment painful but Dr. Hyde is super gentle and careful. I feel like he really tries to minimize the pain instead of rushing through it. Once the procedure is done they fit you for stockings and help you put them on. After the treatment, I had to wear the lovely stockings for a week. Even though it's annoying, it's super important to follow the instructions so you get the best results. As to be expected, I was a little bruised but in no time my legs were looking amazing! When I went back for my follow up appointment, Dr Hyde found a couple more that were bothering him so he touched them up for free! What a nice guy :) I am so happy with my results. Dr. Hyde was extremely professional and polite. Not only did he explain the procedure and process thoroughly. He also called and checked up on me passed office hours to make sure I was okay. My follow up appointment was more than I could ask for. He check for anything that was abnormal and was so kind to give me more injections free of charge because they were not noticeable before. I have been a nurse for 23 years and I am on my feet a lot. I have had terrible spider veins since I was 18 years old ( now 47). I have had many many treatments on those veins so I feel somewhat experienced when it comes to the subject. I did my research on Dr Hyde before making my appt for a consult. Not only is he an expert in his specialty but he has treated countless patients. Of course the more patients you treat, the more reviews you will receive both positive and negative. I must say that I am glad I read past the negative reviews ( as the few that were posted seemed like women who had issues in life in general). I was very impressed by Dr Hyde's professionalism and knowledge during my first visit. I decided to go ahead and book my first treatment which was exactly what I had expected. Dr Hyde was friendly, professional and most of all did a fabulous job injecting my veins. I hardly felt a thing!
