I say kids because we were the Medicare raft! Dex was our guide - he is nice, polite and very, very helpful. It was our first time rafting and we never felt intimidated or scared. He took great care of us. Schaffer was hysterical and had us all at ease immediately, laughing and joking along the way. The local beer and chips at the end hit the spot for us! So much fun! Me and my two adult kids went down the slaughterhouse... 14 class IV rapids... beautiful scenery, exhilarating, incredible every minute. Shafer was the absolute best guide ever! I was afraid at first, but Shafer took care of me as if I was his grandma! Which is what I asked him to do! Lang was the kayaking scout in front of us, and he was so much fun. The other two guides were amazing as well. We just had a fabulous crew! And we can't forget Erica, who was awesome as our driver! She took the best photos ever going over the rapids. Was the highlight of our trip! Not to mention the snacks and beverages at the very end. And the bonus was that all the photos are free. We had a group of 4 with skills ranging from true beginner to experienced fly fisher and they accommodated us all. Wow! What a great experience from start to finish. My Type-A husband that requires detailed planning said he had zero feedback for them. He said the whole experience was perfectly planned with zero room for improvement! I've never heard him say that in the 14 years I've known him. Booking our trip was easy to do online. We were looking for a rafting trip so that's all I was shopping, but they do offer other excursions. On their website rafting excursions are broken into Class I & II(mild), Class III (moderate), and Class IV (adventurous). From those classes were several options, some being labeled as popular. This made it easy for me to choose our excursion as a first timer. Since it was our first time, but we also wanted some excitement we went with Upper Roaring Fork which is considered moderate. Seeing that children as young as five years old are permitted made me feel comfortable booking this as first timers. Time, duration, dates, pricing, and level of difficulty were all clearly laid out on the booking page. Booking online also offers a 10% discount. The morning after I booked I received an email from the company asking where we were staying with an offer to pick us up from our hotel and asking if I had any questions. How nice! In the booking confirmation all the information I needed about what to bring was included. The day of the excursion Vicky and Evan picked us up, arriving even a few minutes ahead of schedule. Evan safely drove us about 15 minutes away to our starting point while Vicky chatted with us and went over some information. We were told we could leave valuables in the van since Evan stays with the vehicle the entire time. Before dropping the raft in the water Vicky gave thorough safety instructions and a how to on rafting. We even practiced what we learned a few times before starting the trip. Vicky was our guide and she was friendly and competent. I felt safe during the trip. She was on top of letting us know when rapids were coming as well as warning us about upcoming instructions. While going through rapids she gave clear instructions in a cheerful voice. At one point we saw other companies struggling with a rough patch, but Vicky handled it well so we didn't get stuck. From start to finish the Upper Roaring Fork excursion was about four hours. This included the drive to and from the starting point and the actual trip. Upper Roaring Fork provided a nice combination of float and level III rapids. The mountain and nature views along the way were beautiful. Did it even happen if there isn't a photo? No fear! Photos were taken before and during the trip by Evan. He appeared several times on the side of our route to take photos. By that evening Elk Mountain emailed the photos to me. The best part is that the photos are included in the cost! This isn't a cruise or amusement park where they take a bunch of good photos and ask $20 per photo. Once we were off the water we were greeted with snacks, beer, soda, and water. Extra points for the beer being local. Like the photos, this is all included in the cost too. After a 15 minute drive we were returned to our hotel. THE BEST! We just took a class 3 rapids tour (upper roaring fork) 2 weeks ago with Curtis as our guide and it was truly phenomenal. We had kids to seniors (age ranges from 9 to 70')s and it was amazing for each of us. Curtis is an EXPERT and I felt so comfortable with him as our guide. I was able to have just a fun time without fear because I completely trusted him and his abilities. I loved the fact that they also had another person take photos of us going through the rapids and getting drenched. :) I have rafted before, but this was by far my best experience anywhere. Even though it was snowmelt, we all felt warm because of the wetsuits and booties. The gear was also brand new and smelled "clean" - no funk whatsoever. I talked to other guides (some of whom have even worked for other companies) and every local and guide all recommended this company. The Ritz-Carlton Aspen also said they consistently hear only amazing things about this company. I give my highest recommendation and can't wait to be back.
