I picked up my sons dog last week on Tuesday, she had to stay for 10 days, they gave her vaccines so she would be up to date (thats a good thing). I was told when I picked her up that they had given her the "kennel cough" vaccine and the rest of them, I said "okay good now she is up to date on everything". I was handed all the papers and the man that brought her out said "she is good to go". After getting home, I noticed she had a dry hack, didnt think too much about it (I have never had one of my dogs get Kennel cough, so I didnt know) Next day I notice she is really warm., I figured it was because she was vaccinated. Next day, still hot coughing more. I looked through the papers and found that they were giving her 3 meds, and she was supposed to continue taking them. I called them in the morning and they didnt call back until the end of the day. They never told me she got kennel cough, didnt offer me any medication, ask if I had other pets or anything else. I had to take her elsewhere to get her medication, They could have at the very least said "hey your dog needs to see a vet to get medication", I have other dogs. somebody there needs to....... read more

DISABLED CAT - where do i start... the only understandable part ? nina was rehomed due to financial issues, then the woman we gave her to rehome her THEN she got rehomed again. nina is not even older than a year old, rehomed 4 times. the past couple months i've been joking with my spouse " wouldn't be crazy if we got nina back ? " ironically enough, 3 days later i get a call she's in the shelter. my heart absolutely shatters because who would put this poor baby IN A SHELTER ? i feel so guilty she ended up this way, she deserves the world. of course i get in contact with this shelter and i was told i could get her the next day. then i called once more and they misinformed me, it's okay i understand even if it really sucks i really can't do anything. i came to terms with it but i messaged this shelter saying, " please send updates just take care of her. i WILL get her, other people wouldn't understand if they adopted her " basically saying she will end back up where she began. she didn't deserve that at all, i knew i had to take my baby home and because i'm in a very good financial state now it would be very different. i was looking at the reviews during this time and i was fuming. i was asking a lot of questions because i was incredibly worried, the girl contacted me the next day saying that she couldn't update me and the vet was taking very good care of her. a couple days later however i got a call that she was doing very bad and if i could pick her up. of course i went to go get my baby, i was so relieved but disgusted at the same time. they told me she had a uti, dehydrated and wouldn't eat. once i got her she was covered in her poop, everywhere. 2 hour drive back home and she was eating and drinking, very happy to just be home. just disgusted, wouldn't recommend this place. very disappointed AND disgusted with the person who last had nina. make sure you know who you're rehoming your cats to, make sure they're safe. nina is safe with us now and she is in her forever home with us. read more

We have adopted and fostered several animals from here and I have had nothing but positive experiences. They are helpful and supportive even months after adoption if challenges come up. Through fostering I have seen how much the staff there care so deeply for animals, and it's clear these people do this for the love. (Because this work sure isn't easy!!) If you are looking to adopt from here please understand that this is still a business with rules/policies and not an animal free for all. They are extremely busy and often over capacity with trying to care for animals. It can be upsetting, but folks need to be patient and empathetic and understand that shelters often run on very limited funds, staff, and support. For folks being negative I encourage you to volunteer here a couple hours a week and see the pressure people are under trying to care for all these forgotten or mistreated animals. It's not easy! I took in to my home a Boxer who was lost out in the snow on Sunday, 1/19/2023. On Monday, 1/20/2023 I took him to my Vet to have him scanned for a chip. Regrettably he had no chip & no collar. Next I went to Elkhart Co. Humane Society looking for help in finding this beautiful dogs rightful owner. I explained to the male staff member on duty that the animal was NOT CHIPPED. I explained that I needed help in reuniting this beautiful animal with its rightful owner. He assured me that if I left the dog there it would be held for 10 days with his photo posted. If the owner failed to claim him he would have his testicles removed, chipped & put up for adoption on a first come bases. This dogs photo was posted for exactly 26 hours before being taken down. On the ninth day I called in pretending to be looking for a lost boxer. This same male employee spoke with me on the phone. When I told him I was looking for a lost boxer he played dumb, don't know about any boxer last week - we get boxers in all the time, la de da. I came clean and told him I'm the one who brought the animal in and I want to adopt him if he's not been claimed. Next he changes his story to only having to keep the dog for three days and not ten days like he said when I left the dog. He said it's cause the dog wasn't chipped. Starting to get the picture? He knew this animal had no chip in him when I was there because I explicitly told him that. This individual lied to me about the time table know his intent to steal the animal. The only reason I went to them was in seeking help finding the rightful owner. This individual knew already that he had planned to steal this beautiful animal and sell it to a breeder before I ever left the building! This kind of misrepresentation, trickery & theft should not be tolerated by the either Elkhart county police the or management team at the Elkhart Co. Humane Shelter. I lost my dog this past summer but by the grace of GOD was reunited the next day so I know the pain & complete defeated-ness that comes from losing a beloved pet. This animal is house broken, very well behaved ,clean and in perfect health and physically intact for breeding. I imagine this deceptive employee stood to make several thousand dollars from the sale of this animal to his "back door breeder" buddy. This individual is surely sociopathic to some degree lacking any human compassion for the rightful owners pain and suffering and especially any children who may also be suffering the loss of this beloved animal. Shame on him and all others at the Elkhart County Humane Society involved in this deceptive border line criminal activity. and shame on the Elkhart County Sheriff Department for turning a blind eye. read more

If I could give NO Stars I would. Had 2 of ours accidently taken here due to a miscommunication. It was a momma and her baby. They were dropped off just after closing so I wasn't able to call that night. Called first thing in the morning ( they were there overnight ) and they told me I would have to pay $25 to get each one back. That's really crappy and my kids are very upset. My little one cried herself to sleep last night because she was missing her baby kitten. This place sucks. Find somewhere else to take your animals. A**holes. read more

We went today to see about getting a dog. The place was filthy and the staff seemed inconvenienced by our presence. The dogs had no place to lay down besides on cold concrete covered in their own poop! It was disgusting! This is by far one of the worst facilities I have been to! I know we have a high volume of homeless animals and it can be overwhelming. However, these animals deserve better and this facility can provide better if they wanted to! read more

I only put one star because I wasn't able to leave it without any stars or I would have. The lady at the front desk who usually is wearing sunglasses & has brown hair is EXTREMELY disgusting. She has the most demeaning attitude of anyone that I have ever met. We went in to adopt a dog and give it a good life and she made the process extremely difficult and almost impossible. From the moment we walked in she treated us awfully. I don't know if it's because we look "young" or "not established" but little does she know we have an amazing home, salary & life to give an animal. She seems extremely judgmental, she WILL soeak over you and completely disregard anything that you have to say to her. I recommend highly avoiding this b**** as she will make your experience extremely awful. Shame on you Elkhart humane society for hiring such a rude, degrading woman who thinks she's better then everyone. Aren't you guys supposed to be revoking these animals so that they can have a better life? Well, this puppy lost out on what could have been something amazing because of this nasty employee of yours. It will be I year since I adopted my kitty! Her name was originally Mirrah, but her name was changed to Myra. The staff was wonderful, they gave me all the time I needed to get to know her. My mom and my sister-in-law came with me. They even expressed sympathy about my losing my kitty of 15 years the month before. The only thing, they had misrepresented her being spayed. After my mom and I being literally up all night the first night, I took her to my vet only to find out that she had not been spayed. That was an expense I had not planned on. They had to back peddle when my vet called them on it. Other than that, they were very professional and very nice. June 18th will be 1 year! Myra (Mirrah) is my baby and my mom's also!! She is my mom's buddy! Myra is my 2nd kitty I've adopted from them, I would choose them again!! Pam S. read more
