Oh man the Elkhorn saloon. I have many memories in this place. When I grew up I spent summers in Sumpter Oregon. Finally I was old enough to go into the Elkhorn and it was so much fun. This is definitely the locals hangout as that was in fact how I found out about this place. A guy in the grocery store down the street recommended it to me. The food was pretty decent and it appeared they had a full bar. Clearly there are nights where they have a live band playing as well. The locals and the bartender didn't seem overly friendly to this outsider, but weren't rude either. There is a dining area on the side of the building, with the front area being a non kid friendly bar. I had a blue cheese burger with fries. The fries were excellent and the burger was pretty decent. I'd feel confident in saying it started out as a frozen patty prior to my arrival and came with that frozen patty texture. This is not a bad stop if in the area and yes, I'd go back. Just not until having tried the competition across the street. read more

We were camping up the road, and had heard about the burgers here, so we stopped in for an early dinner on a Saturday night (4:30PMish). Walked in the front door, which is the bar area. It was packed, but one of patrons pointed us in the right direction. Only a few people in the restaurant area, but it was early. We had a friendly waitress, who went over the specials, which sounded great, but we had already made our minds up. We each ordered the Cowboy burger; one with French fries and one with onion rings. The burgers were great, big, tasty, and with plenty of toppings; just as expected. The fries and onion rings complemented well. The portions were big enough that we took some back to camp to finish later. Anyway, great little place, good prices, and friendly service. We will be back, for sure. read more

Dive bar with dive bar service, lack luster, and cold shoulder ambiance. We added a dollar to the collection that was nice, stif good drinks for a good price. If you don't mind a dive bar, check it out. Was told the burgers were good here but everyone else was offing pizza (looked too greasy for me). Stopped in and ordered the Taco Tuesday special. I haven't had such a poor meal in many, many years. The tacos were straight out of box and not warmed in the oven which gave them an unpleasant taste and texture. Ordered a side of fries too and they came pale, soft and lukewarm. Interesting, the photos of the tacos on this site is NOT what you get. Maybe it's under new ownership /management. The place is clean and staff friendly but my experience left me with the thought we'll never come back. read more

I'm giving this place one star. I've been here many times. Always over the memorial day weekend. I come through town just like everyone else looking for the good stuff during the flea market. Let's start several years prior to this weekend (2017 memorial day weekend) The bartender was very cranky. Almost as if she s isn't like all the drunks in the bar paying way too much money for dog shit drinks. A lot of the people were there to get drunk. Meaning they intended on drinking as much as they could before passing out or finding some local to shack up with. I say local and by that I mean probably the cranky bitch of a bartender. Fast forward to this year. The sign out front says it for sale. Well no kidding. Poor service from past years. Now there is an older guy behind the bar and he is struggling to keep people satisfied with new drink orders and regular bar activities. Not impressed. Little do the grouchy people of Sumpter know but if it wasn't for the people who come visit for memorial day weekend, the fourth of July, or labor day the town would dry up and blow away. You'd think they would give a shit. But apparently they are just not smart enough. I'll probably be back and they'll probably all be in he same pricks. But hey, at least you have my two cents. Highly highly recommend this amazing dinner spot! The food was absolutely amazing, and the service was even better if that's possible! With a full bar and a pool table! Once you walk in, the smoke smell is so potent. Also it's not a good spot for a group of 8 or more. We sat down and moved some tables together. After starting to order our drinks some of our group devoted to go to the place across the street. If u want the best of both worlds with service and better air quality go across the street. If u just want a beer and nothing more. Than I recommend this place. Definitely needs an update. read more

Great service and awesome food. The staff is very personable. We were a large group of 20 to 25 people and they handled all of us really well. Everyone should try the hamburger with the peanut butter and marshmallow cream. Sounds weird but it was incredibly decadent. read more

The food itself was excellent, however the waiter was extremely rude asked what came on a salad and it was such an imposition to him to answer without out be rude "The usual stuff" as i quote. Never came to ask how food was or if we needed refills. I waited for 15 minutes or more at the counter to get my bill to pay to leave. read more

Tucked away in this small town, I happened across the biggest selection of burger options I've ever seen. The food was tasty, the bartender was great to talk to, and the animated locals jabbering away at the bar only contributed to the small town atmosphere. We were very pleasantly surprised on a Sunday afternoon, in Sumpter, Oregon as we were looking for someplace to have lunch at a reasonable price. We entered the Elkhorn Saloon and were greeted by a friendly man. We chose to have hamburgers which came with French fries or salad for $7.00. I hesitantly ordered a salad but that is what I wanted with my hamburger. Usually salads are made with ice berg lettuce, maybe grated carrots and a few croutons, when ordered with a hamburger. I do not like ice berg lettuce. But, was I pleasantly surprised when my salad was delivered to the table. It covered the whole salad plate and had diced tomatoes, a little diced onion, sliced olives, croutons and Fresh LEAF Lettuce, YUM! The rest of my group ordered the French fries and said they were hot and fresh. The burger was tasty and included leaf lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. I highly recommend the Elkhorn Saloon when you need a lunch in Sumpter! read more
