I love writing reviews with complete honesty cause that's how people get informed properly. Nell's is usually a bit of a waiting game. That being said if you drive bye and see a line on both sides of the building I suggest you just keep driving. Now Nell's used to have a very tasty simple steak burger. They got the sauce just right so to speak. Then like all good things it had to fade away. Still love your mozzarella sticks though. Just can't swallow that dry tasteless patty topped with the bitter thought of its former glory. Staff is usually on the friendly side. So there's that. read more

Decent place for a quick bite. It's a drive thru restaurant and they offer burgers, salads and different types of sandwiches. They have a variety of shake flavors and other drinks. Service was good, I believe I only waited 10 min. The price for the food was also good. I paid $11 for a burger, fries and shake. read more

my early morning ham and cheese croissant was a fading memory, same for the hot bean water as I pulled off the interstate and went to town in search of local fare. I was running out of options when I happened upon an odd little shack with an odd little name claiming a long - and probably storied - past (since 1955!!) wasn't sure how the food-for-moneys exchange took place so I parked off to the side and tried to figure out the menu for a few minutes... some of it made sense and some didn't even try; wouldn't dare guess about a Bobby Burger... went with the namesakes Nells plus fries and a really big cup o' water. since everything is prepared to order a fella can expect to wait a spell for victuals and waiting and spelling is just what you'll do. about fifteen minutes worth. and you pay cash money up front for this privilege too :-) but when the food comes out you get your nickles' worth; nothing fancy but a respectable burger with a pile o' fixings to make a mess out of wherever you're eating... lettuce, pickle, tomato, mustard, ketchup and about a bazillion curly fries. my heart hurts a little just thinking about it :-) read more

I hope you like curly fries because the small order is enough for 2-3 people. We had the bacon cheeseburgers, an oreo milkshake, tots, sweet potato fries, and curly fries. The burgers were good size and made fresh. There were a ton of curly fries but the tots and sweet potato fries were a more normal size. The shake was delicious. They have an extensive drink menu that I'm curious to try. The service was great and they folks were super friendly. read more

A pretty darn good drive-in for little La Grande. The fries were fresh and fantastic and the chocolate malts were perfect. It takes a minute (be patient) as everything is made to order. I'll be back every time I'm in LG. read more

this place is horrible i waited 40+mins just for trash food. when i got to the window apparently the chef went on a break? if i already didn't pay i wouldve drove off, there was 2 long hairs in my "hot dog" and the hot dog was even a hot dog. it was in a hamburger bun and cut up like a hamburger? i also got onion rings and there was also hair in there, i got fries and it was just 2 blocks of fries fused together. read more

First time here on 10-13-23. Ordered two Nell's burgers and sweet potato fries. Employees Danika and Allie were super friendly and efficient. Burgers were excellent but the fries were soggy and tasted fishy. Deep fryer probably needed to be cleaned. Sweet potato fries were cut thick like steak fries which can often make them soggy. A cute little building with 2 drive thru areas. Such a popular spot, they could use 2 more! Very large menu and we didn't know what to order. Luckily, a young lady answered our questions and helped us make our selection. The burgers and fries were great! Two patties of something hamburger like, bad tomatoes, add some lettuce and mayo, stuff it all in a marginal bun with a couple slices of bacon and voila. Cherry coke that was sweet syrup mixed with flat soda, not sure it was coke, hard to tell. The stuff in the can at big Wally's is better and that's not saying much. I'd tell ya all about the tater tots I paid for but they weren't in the bag. Maybe the Johnson brothers work here. A long wait, bad food, incomplete order in the bag, what's left to say? "Well these are the choices I'm giving you" Nell's was one of the only places in town I hadn't tried yet. I ordered my food in the drive-through, paid, and left. Burger and a milkshake. Simple, right? Well something happened with the milkshake, and I was given an incorrect flavor. Sometimes this happens, and most businesses are willing to fix the mistake and remake the shake. Nell's? Nope. I circle back around and go back to let them know there was a mistake and to hopefully get the one I was trying to in the first place. I was told that they could either dump a bit more flavor into it, or I could pay full price and order a new milkshake. I told them that all I want is the correct flavor, and asked if they could just fix it for me. Nope! Lady at the drive through obviously didn't want to do that. I was polite, and yet I was told in a condescending tone "well these are the choices I'm giving you." Do yourself a favor, please, and drive a bit further down the road to eat somewhere else. Normally small mom and pop businesses have a pleasant and polite charm to it, but I firmly believe that due to the condescending and rude way I was treated, Nell's thinks otherwise. By the time we finally made it out of a ridiculously long doctor appointment (consisting of approximately 7 minutes of face time and 1 hour 14 minutes of wait time) my boyfriend and I were starving. On our way in we had passed Nell's and agreed that was the night's dinner spot of choice. So off we went. First things first: THEY DO NOT ACCEPT DEBIT OR CREDIT CARDS. We found this out the hard way. Fortunately, our bank was only a few blocks away. This is a drive up burger joint, but it's not your average McDonald's. Everything here is handmade to order, so 'fast food' is an overstatement. You get what you wait for though, and the wait is worth it. The menu itself is large, especially the specialty drink menu. If I hadn't had a serious hankering for a chocolate malt, I would have loved to experiment with a "Little Mermaid" or a "Spiderman". Both of our orders consisted of burgers and fries. I ordered the standard "bacon cheeseburger" and my boyfriend ordered the "fire burger", his was one of the famous steak burgers, and mine was your standard ground beef patty. I wish I had known this, although I should have suspected from the much lower cost of my burger. His looked huge and juicy, mine was seriously lacking in the belly filling department. Next time I'll go with a double, or just get one of the steak burgers. Both were big on flavor and really hit the spot. Our fries were of the hand cut, curly variety. I'm not actually a fan of the hand cut type, preferring a good old fashioned, machine processed, steak fry. Hunger makes for the best flavoring however. I downed my fries so fast I didn't even notice how salty they were until I was almost done. I handed over the last bit and was surprised to hear that my salt-loving boyfriend agreed that they were too salty even for his taste. (Apparently his had been salted differently, or had been under mine when the salt shaker hit the orders, because his were just perfect) Pretty pleased with Nell's overall. I stopped in yesterday yesexpecting a nice old fashioned meal of fries and finger steaks, or fritters and fries as they're called on the menu. After giving me someone else's order and having to wait another 15 minutes or so, I got my much anticipated order. I opened it up and was treated to cold, very greasy curly fries and some weird little steak fingers. Fries were so greasy and bad I couldn't eat more than a bite. The steak fingers were slightly better, I ate about three of them before giving up. Gross dinner altogether, my dogs wouldn't even eat it. We stopped here on the way to the Wallowas for backpacking with the llamas! There were 12 of us! It took awhile, but once we ordered the orders came out pretty quickly. Most ate burgers, but I don't eat beef and or chicken if I don't know where it is sourced. So, I ate a tuna sandwich. One of the few things not fried. It isn't food I would normally eat, but the group had decided to go there, so ok. It had a nice picnic table area under apple trees which was nice. If you wanted a special energy drink too, this is your place!! An astonishing list of drinks you could get. It was worth the stop, but not sure I'd go here again if on my own. read more
