Went there on 6/13 and it took over 2hrs to get our food. Started with "Were out of prime rib" So we ordered other food. about an hour after we ordered The bartender/server came up to our table ad said our food was coming up next . about 45 mins later he came back and I asked what the deal was and he says "do you want an apron? we have plenty of them" totally rude, cocky and uncalled for any patron let alone the hungry one. Ther were a lot of people waiting for their food like we were. I guess the kitchen was understaffed and so was the servers. I got to say the food was good once we got it . but I probably won't go back to this place, along with the 5 people we were with. read more

This was probably really cool 15 years ago. but it has not aged well. we were set in the very back with a view of the bar staff chatting non-stop. The portions were solid, the prices were normal considering the area has become so touristy. the food was only so so. was almost bland, would have thought they would have spiced it up a bit in a place called the stubborn mule. read more

Eleven of us spent several hours in the Stubborn Mule in Joseph this afternoon. Favorite drinks all around, well except for the DD's. Our server gladly positioned two gathering height six tops together for our party. Conversations were lively, although the music was very loud. Everything from Cod baskets, Beef and Cheddar Sans, Club Sans, Burgers and Salads were ordered and served. Nicole our server was attentive, Gary the Owner and Chief Chef had the kitchen staff hopping, seemed like hardly any time passed and lunch was served. Great food! Great Service! Great Prices! Really enjoyed the simple house salad. Fresh crunch lettuce. They took the time to make us properly. The clam chowder was amazing. Super fresh. You could tell it was scratch made in house. The texture of the carrots & potatoes were spot on. I have the surf & turf special. The steak was perfectly cooked. The shrimp were tasty. I'm a sauce person (no sauce like Demi glaze or hollandaise), but the mushrooms added a nice touch. We took home 2 slices of pie to have with coffee the next morning. We ended up leaving after waiting over 45 minutes and not having our waiter come back to take our order. Watched him bring drinks and water to every other table and then disappeared into the bar. Never took any of their orders either. Apparently, the bar patrons are more important than the restaurant side. The wait staff was nice, the food was decently priced for the portion sizes. For a place with so many cows around, i would have expected better tasting steaks. The steak and the prime rib was mostly fat. However, the ambiance was what really turned me off. If I'd known this place was run by Trump Supporters, I never would have gone there. My wife is a person of color and walking around and seeing the Pro-Trump BS they had on the walls made the place feel very unwelcoming and no amount of polite staffing was going to change that. The service was so rude. Came into the place on a Friday night. The bartender was too busy shoving his face with food. Finally came over to the table to help us. Asked him what kind of beers he had on tap. Instead of giving us a list or attempting to name of a couple, he couldn't and his comment was "we have a lot, what do you want!" Tried to order are food and he said you better make it quick. It was 8:30 kitchen said online open until ten. Constantly had to swat fruit flys above our heads. The food finally came out we ordered a half of a Reuben. It looked rather large for a half. Asked if it was half, and he said " No but that's what you're paying for! 40 years ago, Joseph used to be a sleepy little hole in the wall burb you blew through on your way to Hells Canyon. More recently, Joseph has morphed into a tourist trap for snowflakes from the big city as evidenced by the whiny posts and negative reviews about crybaby complaints by butthurt children. It's no wonder the locals hate us. Well, they hate you, not me because I am more like them than I am like you. This is cattle country. Want a good steak? You'll find it here. Seafood, quiche, rabbit food? Maybe not so much. I've been stopping her forever and this is one of the few restaurants and businesses that predates the transition of Joseph into a tourist destination. A brew (or two) and a prime rib and I am on my way with a smile. Prices are reasonable considering what you get. Wait staff has always been fine although your experience is going to vary depending on how privileged you think you are and what sort of attitude you walk into the place with. If you don't like American flags or the people who fly them, Eastern Oregon probably shouldn't be on your radar as a place to visit. If this describes you, you most likely won't like this place and my take is that your patronage won't be missed if you decide to go elsewhere. I happen to love this place and am always happy when I come by and find that they are still in operation. The locals are great. And the town is very nice. I love going to the Stubborn Mule to eat! The food is enjoyable and there is always plenty of it no matter what you order! The prime rib is fantastic, the steak finger basket is really good and is definitely my go to meal. Whenever we go there, it's always busy and can take some time to get your meals but the staff is great, they give you plenty of refills and the food is awesome! This place is great! Our family has been there a few times. We have eaten out back on the patio and inside on the restaurant side. HUGE menu. Lots of options. We were fortunate to be there for prime rib night this last time and I finally remembered to take pictures to show the huge portions. Family friendly, they have a kids menu and high chairs. I believe they take reservations if you're expecting a large party or plan on being there for prime rib night. In terms of service, it was busy. I ordered a well done prime rib. I think we waited an appropriate amount of time. The prices are reasonable. I don't know about the political views that was mentioned in another post , but we didn't get that vibe. read more

Had high hopes for Stubborn Mule based on Google ratings but it was a disappointment. While the portions are large (overly so, stick to the half size sandwiches or burgers) the food was mediocre. The appetizers, we had boneless wings and the fried cauliflower, were obviously frozen and reheated. The burger was just okay, but way too large. Food is excellent! The 16 and 12oz steaks were well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Even my husband's fish & chips were just lightly battered and he enjoyed the dish. The only negative element was the loooong wait to get our orders! We had to wait an hour for our food. There was only one server in the entire dining area and she was it! I really hate doing this to a small local restaurant, but it was really a disappointing dining experience. We came in at 1:35pm today and sat down. Nobody greeted or even acknowledged us for 20 minutes. One of the two waitresses finally came over, took our drink order and disappeared for another 10 minutes. She came back with our water and a lemonade and took our food order, then was out of sight until our food came out at 2:45. Yep, our food, which was all fried, came out an hour and 10 minutes after we first sat down. The kids loved their wings and that's about the extent of the positive. My wife had fish and chips and I had half a dozen boneless wings. My wings were so-so. They were swimming in buffalo sauce so they got pretty soggy. The fish and chips: the fries were doused in a heavy layer of Cajun seasoning, making them inedible. The fish was breaded well, but tasted like a churro, like it had been breaded or cooked in cinnamon sugar. My wife hesitated to say anything but eventually gave feedback to the waitress. The waitress was passive aggressively apologetic, saying "I'm sorry it wasn't what you thought it would be". To her credit she offered to remove the fish and chips from our bill since my wife barely touched it. All around it was disappointing, and you could see from the looks of other diners around us who were also waiting an unreasonable amount of time for their orders, that they shared the same disappointment as we did read more

Excellent food and service. The plates are all big enough to share. The burgers are unique and very flavorful. Even though they were lacking help, as all restaurants seem to be right now, they did not disappoint. This is our first time here and will plan another visit when we return. After a huge hail storm that took out the power we had zero place for dinner. All the restaurants closed and sent staff home. We got lucky and when power returned Stubborn Mule was open! They were short handed so the wait for food was long but we understood why. It was worth waiting for their food. It was so good. Everything was made fresh, their buns are homemade and delish. I enjoyed a classic French Prime Rib Dip. It was so big I could only eat half. The meat was tender and flavorful. French fries were hot and fresh. Hubby had the chicken fried chicken special and said it was good and the meat was flavored well. Kids had chicken strips and said they were the best! I would definitely return. The service was great but the steak fingers were left in the deep fryer way to long and the breading was hard and not good. The steak pieces had a lot of tough fatty cartilage that wasn't cleaned in prep. Just a bad food choice on my part. If we return we will try something else on the menu. read more

This is our first time at this restaurant the first time in Joseph Oregon. We walked down the street and saw this cute place decided we love the name so we were going to go in. We had a delicious dinner considering that there was only one waiter who was also the bartender and had a full patio of people to take care of. Our guys had prime rib cooked perfectly. If you go in and it looks even remotely busy, skip it. We sat in the lounge at 6:00 and got our food at 7:50. Nearly two hours watching the 3 servers work the restaurant, lounge, patio and bar. On the menu they say "be patient, it's how we do things here" or something to that effect. It's a kitschy way of saying "this is not going to be a good experience, but we warned you so tough." Food was what you'd imagine from the main watering hole in a town of 1,000. Very disappointed in the steaks too. Without exaggeration, the medium rare NY strips came out medium well. Good luck getting that fixed, never mind you just spent $25 on it. Tried to ask if it was reasonable to get it fixed and the waitress brought out a rare steak. Better than well, but still not what was ordered. Felt bad for the waitresses too, you could see most of the tables were getting really tired of waiting. Assuming others have mentioned this in their reviews I can't believe one just called out. Please hire more people so you're at least close to being appropriately staffed. You just got nearly $200 from us for a remarkably mediocre meal completely ruined by waiting (literal) hours only to get to send our food back and still not have it correct. Maybe I'm being picky, snobby, whatever. But you're the ones that put "steakhouse" in your name. Overall: skip this place, save some money and mosey down the street. We had a large group of 9 people (3 kids). Stacy, our server, seated us promptly and gave us the best service I've ever had. She was the only server in the restaurant on a Friday afternoon and she made zero mistakes. She was friendly, quick to refill drinks, and our food was delivered hot and fast. Every order was correct. The food was good - not outstanding, but it hit the spot. My only complaint is the lack of a kids menu. They have a separate dining room to accommodate children, but no separate menu. Bottom line: go there for the service. You won't be disappointed. read more
