My wife and I arrived on a warm October day to enjoy the pumpkin patch and U-pick flowers. We arrived in the afternoon, but there was plenty of selection and nothing was "picked over." I paid $16 for a quart sized plastic vase for my U-pick flowers. They sell gallon sized buckets as well. Scissors and water are provided. Be mindful of bees in the field. They won't trouble you if you don't trouble them. There is an area in the back for you to arrange the flowers; I took full advantage of this because this trip doubled as a photo shoot. There were all types of people enjoying the farm; IG girls, families, even one couple using a wagon full of pumpkins as a baby announcement. Pumpkins range from $5-$20 each depending on size and breed. A nice young man named Luke helped us corral our pumpkins and carry them to our car. I didn't know they offered that service, but we tipped well. If you run up an appetite, they have a snack bar with fritters, ice cream, and lemonade. I'll be back next fall!

Well, this past Saturday my husband and I finally did. The entire property felt like a scene straight out of a Southern postcard. Families were out picking strawberries in the patch, people were relaxing in rocking chairs on the porch with ice cream cones, the café was buzzing, and the roadside market was full of shoppers loading up on goodies. The place was busy but somehow still relaxing. We started in the roadside market where I immediately grabbed one of the little carts because self-control clearly wasn't part of the plan. I stocked up on fresh produce, preserves, ciders, wines, and somehow convinced myself I "needed" adorable wooden earrings from a local artisan. We sampled a few local wines and naturally left with several bottles. The market also has gifts, souvenirs, and and entire section dedicated to dogs/ furry pets. After shopping we headed next door to the café for dessert. They offer cobblers, cakes, pies, homemade ice cream, and enough sweet treats to make you abandon every diet plan you've ever created. My husband is a peach cobbler enthusiast, so ordering their famous peach cobbler was mandatory. According to him, it absolutely lived up to the hype. I went with the peach pound cake and it was moist, buttery, and delicious. Their breakfast and lunch menu also looked really good. If I were road-tripping through the area, this would absolutely be a stop for a meal. It's also definitely going on my list of places to take guests when they come visit Middle Georgia. What really tied everything together was the staff. Everyone we encountered was warm, welcoming, and full of genuine Southern hospitality. One vendor had rows of tables filled with fresh picked vegetables of all types. We were dying to buy something but didn't have anywhere to keep it until we headed home. However, at another table we found a delectable looking almond pound cake made by Sweet Nana, who was present and assured us she was sweet! We took it straight back to our room after detouring by the Dairy Queen for some ice cream. Deeeelicious! The rest of the cake managed to make it home to Atlanta before we finished it. And for good measure I bought a jar of pear relish, which turned out to be spicier than anticipated. If you're in McRae or Helena, you should visit the farmer's market and support the locals. It's open year round from 9am - 2pm. You know you'll find something good. If you don't know where it is, don't worry, there are numerous signs around town directing you to the market.

This is some sort of cottage industry producer of artisan crafted stuff like you'd see on the menu at Husk in Charleston, SC, infused oils and vinegars, hand-crafted sauces, jams and jellies, smoked spices and all other sort of goodies. I have tried their jams (Peach Brandy Jam, I used to top baked Mission Figs), their Espresso Infused Balsamic which I used to make a reduction sauce for filet mignon, and their watermelon jelly is fine, too. They have a Tomato Basil Sauce that I have but have not tried yet and will let you know how it goes. Folks, it's hard to find the weird stuff some of us foodies like to cook with but this Mullen Farms lady has it going on if you want something out of the box. Highly recommend.
