What a perfect place to do candle making, in addition to making your own reed diffuser, room spray and wax melts! I know Elm Candle through work and remembered some of my work colleagues coming here to do a team bonding event. My girl friend was turning 30 and said she would be doing a birthday activity here! Our scent specialist, Mikey was super helpful! They had everything prepared for our ladies to partake in the session and the instructions were on the card which was super cute since it also had a 'Thank You' at the back in support of their small business. You put your name and select which item you want to make. I chose a room spray since I have SO MANY candles at home! Mikey had us choose which container (room spray only had one kind) but candles had a variety. I wanted to make the reed diffuser initially but they were sold out! Next, they had a variety of scents on the wall so you could write those on your card and star your faves! Coffee beans were provided to help with your nose since you smell so many scents! Mikey was so patient with all of us and walked us through the process! I was super pleased with my scents. He evaluated each of our cards, asked us what kinds of scents we are into, and then gathered 3-4 essential oils to smell -- you can mix and match. Such a fun experience! We came to celebrate the birthday of a die-hard candle lover, so it was a perfect fit. We nearly had the place to ourselves on a Friday afternoon, and had fanstastic personalized service. First, you pick your medium and container (candle, diffuser, room spray) and then you can browse the array of scents lined up on the wall. You write down your favorites and then the scent sommalier helps refine your likes into a cohesive fragrance. TBH we were all intimidated because like no one knows what they're doing lol, but all 6 of our scents actually came out perfectly and everyone was happy! Note that some scents were available but not on the shelves, like grapefruit and champagne, so if you don't see something that's a favorite, just ask! Two important notes re: travel -- if you're making a candle, you have to come back and get it the next day! So don't plan this for the last afternoon before you fly out. Additionally, I only packed a carry on and while TSA let me take it, it did get flagged in the Xray and then text positive for explosive chemicals.... so that was... fun. It was an experience! There are so many scents to go through and many different combinations. The interior aesthetic was beautiful. I chose to do a candle and did the ceramic jar with the wood lid. The people helping us were very nice and guided us through the steps and process. My husband and I took a mental health day and headed to Elm. It was one of the best decisions. I booked a reservation at the first available at opening. It was a great space with an inviting and kind staff. It was fun choosing the scents but we found it more relaxing to mix them. The selection of scents is huge which was so hard to narrow down. It is a little pricey. We spent about $90 for two candles to be made but we had a great time and still have the candles. They last a long time. Reserved a month prior for a 2:30 pm session and once we arrived, they accomodated for us to ensure our party had space for the reserved time. They gave us a 15 grace period before they would cancel our time slot but one of us made it on time and sat them right away. Once seated, they explained how to pick our scents and that they would match accordingly to the scents we favorited. There was a three shelf wall of many different scents, including their spring/seasonal collection of scents. To clear our nose pallet, they had a jar of coffee beans as we scented along the way. Once done, we started mixing to reach the certain scent we wanted based off their recommendation. On same day you can bring your scents home and same time as you leave. Service: 4/5 Everyone was kind and helpful - nothing memorable though. Selection: 4/5 You can choose from a few different products - a candle, diffuser, room spray, or a wax tart. After choosing a product, you can narrow down what type of that specific product you want. We chose the candle. Prices for the candles ranged anywhere from $38-$53 (may not be exact). The longer the burn time, the more expensive the candle. From then, you can sniff a whole variety of different scents and write down what you like. The workers will then look at your choices and recommend blends of scents. Once you choose your blend, you get to choose the amount of each scent you want in your candle. I'm docking a star because it definitely isn't cheap. My friend and I both chose the most expensive candle option ($53 each) and after tip, our total came out to around $128. So again, it's a good one time experience, but not really an activity you would frequent. For wax products it requires approx. 2 hours of cure time so I would suggest you do this and then go get food nearby and come pick it up afterwards. Such a fun experience! I haven't heard of anything like this and found it a super fun and unique experience. We were visiting from CA and knew we'd be grabbing lunch nearby in the Capitol Hill area. Made an appointment online which was really easy, and nice that they send you reminders for your appointment. We arrived a few minutes early but got seated at the bar (it was pretty full, just a few empty seats in between parties), when we got there for our 1pm seating. The employees are super friendly and walk you through the entire process. The most fun is walking through the scent wall and jotting down your favorites. It can get a big overwhelming with all the scents (pro tip: step outside and try to get a whiff of fresh air), they also have coffee beans to smell in between. After narrowing it down, you choose if you'd like a candle, room spray (they were out of this option when we went due to supply delays), or a diffuser. We all opted for the candle (keep in mind that if you go with a candle, it takes a few hours to set before you can pick it up to take it home- we just came back a few days later to pickup). I also loved mixing and matching trios of the scents - it's such a fun process, especially when you go with a group! You fill up a little shot with the fragrance oils, dump it into your candle votive and mix for a while. Then you can smell your scent and you're all set! Super fun date with friends or your significant other. It's nice to see what people like as their favorite scents. There's so many scents to pick from in their wall! You write down all the ones you like, the candle expert at the bar will read from the list and from your top two, tell you what flavor you lean towards more- sweet, floral, fresh, sweet flora, musk, etc. You then get those three scents to mix and you control the amount in the candle. It takes 2 hours to set, so you can extend your date to a bar or restaurant! The most basic candle tumblr was $34 or $36. Highly recommended to book a time since it can get busy. No charge on just booking a slot. They have a 15 min grace period and we were late for 3 mins and they gave our spots away to walk-ins. That's fine, our mistake! What didn't make sense was the next available spot was an hour later. With walk-ins being a thing, the grey haired lady could have recommended we wait for the next appointment and see if we can "walk-in." Appointment times were 15 mins apart when I booked mine, so in theory, we could have waited and see. She just overall wasn't super friendly. Last week while in the Capital Hill area I caught glimpse of Elm Candle Bar and after reading about it I was intrigued to experience candle blending for myself. I booked a blending appointment for Saturday morning (I recommend you do as well, as capacity limits are in place to ensure a safe visit for all.) The perks about the reservation is it holds your blending time for 45 minutes, and the $20 fee goes towards your final purchase. Lena our Elm associate was extremely helpful and courteous. She helped us narrow down our favorite scents to 3 (the preferred amount to blend,) creating a beautiful scent profile that both my husband and I agreed upon. Once the mixing of oils, and blending was complete we had to let our candle sit for 2 hours (plan your visit early, so you can go have lunch or shop within the area while you wait for your candle.) Most candles throw are most pronounced when its cool, I purposely lit our candle this morning and it smells as beautiful and clean as it did while blending. My husband and I plan to go at least twice year to blend a a candle together to match the season. My friends and I went to Elm Candle Bar together to craft some candles and diffusers. I like the idea of this shop and they have a variety of scents available on the shelf for you to pick. The whole process takes about 1.5-2.5 hours (it depends on how fast you decide on the scents, it will be great if you have something on your mind before you come in (such as fruity, cozy, woody, etc.) but of course the staff are onsite to help you decide or provide you guidance. You can write down as many as scents you like, but at the end, pick the top 4. Once you pick the 4 scents, you can start pouring the oil into the measurement cup and mix it however you like. This part is a little bit challenging because the store is covered with scents and it is very hard to tell what it smells like. The total cost is around $45-50 + tips for my diffuser, I can take it with me at the end, and my friends who made candles need to come back on another day. I felt rushed in the appointment and the staff did not give us that much guidance but just told us we needed to speed up a little bit because there was another appointment after us. The whole experience took about 1 hr in-store. If your appointment is after 4PM, you'll have to wait until the next day to pick up candles, so if you don't want to come back, go in earlier or choose one of the other scent formats. First, they give you a clipboard, and you write down your favorite scents as you walk down the shelf and smell all of them. There are jars of coffee beans you can use to reset your olfactory sense if you get too overwhelmed. You also decide what format, size, and color you want the candles to be. Then you pick your favorite two scents out of all the ones you wrote down and sit at the bar so the workers can help you pick a third complimentary scent from the other ones on your list, and you can decide by smelling the three bottles of aromatic oil together. Then you work on the ratio of the three scents creating a mixture of the aromatic oils in a measuring cup, so you can make the ratio to your liking. The worker had us step outside with our mixing spoons so we can smell the scent mixture without the influence of other scents from in the store. After we filled our cups, we dumped the oil mixture into the candle wax mixture and stirred for 4 minutes, then we left them to cure in the store and picked them up the next day. The smallest candle cost ~$42 and the biggest one cost ~$56, if I remember correctly. Overall I say the experience was pretty fun, however, I do think that as a person who likes fruity scents, I was a little disappointed with the scents they had available. They had 80+ scents, but a lot of the aromatic oils leaned more floral, which I'm not a fan of. They had some unique ones, like freshly baked bread, and rain. But some of them didn't smell very accurate like the mango and pear scents smelled more floral than fruit, and the brown sugar boba smelled like... something else. I think it would be better if they added more fruity scents, they were missing basic fruity ones like apple and strawberry, improving the fruit ones they already have. Some fun fruity scents could be like melon and lychee. If you like floral and novel scents, though, I think you'll be happy. read more

Not only is it close to a lot of great stores the staff are super knowledgeable about the neighborhood and restaurants. This is such a cute experience. It takes around a hour from start to finish but the time flies! You pick your type of candle. They also have diffusers and melting wax's. If your from out of town I suggest getting an early reservation cause it takes like 3-4 hours to cure. They have so many different scents but don't feel overwhelmed.
