Planning for an early April 2020 move date, our relocation of just a few blocks in downtown SD was complicated by California's Stay-At-Home order and shut down of non-essential businesses due to COVID-19. In my initial call with Art, he assured me that Elmer's Moving had taken necessary precautions for the safety of its crew and clients. Measures included wearing masks and gloves, disinfecting their equipment and scheduling only one move per day. Due to social-distancing, the quote was made by phone and other communications such as pictures of furniture was conducted by email. Since Elmer's was on a short list of "Approved Movers" for our new residence, Art and the experienced crew were very familiar with the regulations and nuances of the building. One of the worst experiences of my life; so disappointing...seriously PSTD when re-living the incidents related to hir this business. When I was moving my 1300 sq ft house (of 35 years) I had been much more than half way packed, very neat boxes, neatly stacked, all sides of the boxes label, totally labeled, all stacked along one side of my garage. I got two quotes, eventually, regretfully, choosing this business. While getting quotes, Art did come to meet me at my house, he got full vision of the extent of my belongings, I was relying on his professionalism to guide me. I had a deadline that I needed to be out of my home of 35 years, moving to a new townhome 30 miles away, so I calculated "one day with the moving truck and another day to do my final cleaning" = 2 days, I expressed this to Art and he did not mention that one day with the truck may not be enough. Wow, within an hour, after the employees of this business loaded my very neat, organized stack of all the same size boxes into their truck, what was remaining needed to be "box up". Items left to pack were along the 3 perimeter walls of my garage (you know, the surfboard, my suitcases, a grill, a bike, stuff that was not easy to box up previous to this day). Wow, these guys became so rude when I asked to please load things in boxes with organization, I was paying by the hour and was willing to pay extra to take the time to stay super organized. In my face was a young man, Robert, yelling at me "we have to hurry; don't you tell me how to pack", I was shocked. Then, they announced that all of my stuff will not fit into their truck and we have to hurry, and this is going to take more than one day. So frustrating that I was not told that this was going to be a 2 day project. Because of the fact of the 2 days to move, my cleaning crew scheduling got all messed up. Exhausted, I ended up cleaning my home of 35 years all by myself, from 9:00pm to 2:30am (yes, 2:30am). I had to say goodbye to my home of 35 years, home my 3 kids came home from the hospital as newborns...at 2:30am, drive to my new home too exhausted to "celebrate", so very disappointed. Then I called back again he apologized and said he call back on Friday in a couple hours- NO FREAKING CALL BACK!!! Then last chance-called him, said hes been super busy (Blah, Blah, Blah) again call back in 45 minutes (LAST CHANCE) 2 hours later he calls me, then cutting to the end of this... after trying to repeatedly making excuses (PLUS a quote trying to "double up" on his fee's) He tried to double talk me-like a freaking politician - then he could not show up to truly evaluate my household-I told him not to waist anymore of my time- DO NOT USE THESE GUYS-BUYER BEWARE!! read more

The team was absolutely amazing! From the communication to the care of our items, everything was handled with the upmost professionalism and care. They got right down to business as soon as they arrived, and they were so quick. I had ZERO issues and ZERO breakages with them. I moved from a 2 bed 2 bath to a 1 bed 1 bath, and also asked them to make a stop at our storage unit. They worked so hard, they were making me tired just watching them. Found Elmer's after asking on Nextdoor. A few people highly recommended them. I called Art and arranged for him to do a walk through on the house for an estimate. He did the walk through described everything they would do and everything we would have to do. Included moving our baby grand piano in the quote. Sent a not to exceed quote. The final price didn't exceed. No games here. Just professional service, great communication, and easy going employees. His movers, led by Pete, called an hour before they were to arrive. They arrived on time. Got right to work. After a few hours of nonstop work they told me they would be taking a ten minute break that lasted under ten minutes and then right back at it. They put our boxes and furniture and miscellaneous stuff exactly where we asked. I would highly recommend Elmer's moving to anyone considering a move. Big or small. If you do use them have cash on hand for the tip so the workers get paid immediately. read more

Three years ago, Art and his crew moved us into our two bedroom apartment under a different company name (black belt movers). When it came time to move into a house, we knew exactly who to call! The company name has changed but not the service, value, or quality. We lived in a third floor apartment--NO ELEVATOR! But the crew did not complain or slack at all. They were positive, careful with our items and very efficient. Even starting at our 150 sf storage unit, then loading our apartment to the truck took 4 hours and the unload at the new house just 2 more hours. When you hear Elmer's you may think of the iconic glue but you may now think of an iconic mover! I have been using Elmer's Moving (previously Black Belt Movers for my last approx 5 moves over the past years and now more recently today for a family member who had to move last minute. With one call over this past weekend they were there in 48 hours! Awesome! Their service and commitment is outstanding and they single-handedly take away all the negative stigmas that come associated with dishonest moving companies. What really is impressive is their value proposition. There aren't the hidden gotcha fees and surprise charges once the job is completed. How many horror stories have you read about movers who scam the customers once the truck arrives with hidden charges holding the homeowners contents hostage? I was fearful the first time I hired as the industry has a shaky reputation at best Elmer's is a mover you can actually trust. The other thing is their attention to detail I have high end beds from Duxiana whose beds can go over 10k for a bed and other possessions of great sentimental value You don't want them damaged or a soiled bed and you don't want a bed potentially infested with some kind of crawling insect on the ground or in a truck (though I inspected and their trucks were found on all occasions to be unusually clean/organized) The moving team most of whom I greatly admire brought custom designed heavy duty covers and plastic then wrapped and wrapped until there was layer after layer of protection. Great move for allergy sufferers too. My other advice is get the premium insurance that has no deductible.For the difference in money god forbid something does happen you won't have a deductible to start dealing with which pays off in just one single claim with a return on your investment. The slight premium charged makes it a no brainer over standard insurance IMHO At the end of the day when you want great service and perhaps some of the most competitive affordable pricing for high quality service check them out. My contact guy there is Art who may actually be an owner if I remember correctly. No matter how many concerns I bring up of how I want things handled he is the consummate gentleman with exceptional patience Elmer's is my go to moving company. Take my suggestion and make them yours so you can take one of the most stressful days of you transition to a new place and sleep soundly This company has your back and you can take care of other more pleasant things then worrying about your move! read more

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. Art and his crew are incredible! We downsized and moved from a 4 bedroom house to a 2 bedroom and had a stop at storage. There is no guessing with them. They charge by the hour with no minimum! The guys are a professional and nice. They all wear uniform shirts and are super respectful. They care for your belongings as if they are their own. They were so exceptional in providing service above and beyond the customary when a piece left on the roof of the car by my fiancé flew off somewhere on I805. I was provided with 3 moving companies and after checking out Elmer's Moving Yelp reviews, I didn't check any other companies. Art explained the moving procedure, his schedule and pricing. If I had other questions and had to call, he responded immediately. If he couldn't respond, he'd call me right back. Moving day was rainy, got a call from Art about traffic and he'd be a little late. Art came with two workers (sorry, I can't remember their names). While I signed paperwork, the workers got to work immediately. They worked well together, were organized and efficient. The Most successful move I have ever had! Reserving with Art was a breeze. And the crew was the most professional and polite movers I have ever had. Matt called to notify me that they were on their way. They showed up in a clean moving truck. All men were professional and in uniform shirts. And they got straight to work. I asked for 3 men and I'm glad I did. I had a simple one bedroom condo to move, with elevators in both buildings and city parking to deal with. And Thank goodness I did! Matt was able to disassemble and assemble the most difficult West Elm bed there is to move. Pete ran all the boxes back an forth and Lawrence wrapped, organized and safe guarded the truck. My furniture was protected, moved and all in one piece to the new place. They worked well together and communicated with me and each other all along the way. I called incredibly last minute...As in, I called Monday morning asking if there's anyway they could help my seventy year old mom and I move that Monday afternoon. They said yes and squeezed us in! I explained we didn't have furniture but a lot of boxes to go down two flights of stairs, and they explained they do the small jobs too. He sent over Matthew and Lawrence who were awesome, very professional and polite! They knocked the job out filling up an entire van in under an hour! The rate was reasonable and they saved us. I thought I could handle it but I had surgery a few days earlier and my mother has an injured shoulder so they really saved our hides! I've had horrible movers and experiences before. Very personable presentation, professional right down to the literature presented during the estimate appointment by Art. As a military veteran it seemed very similar to the movers I have used during my career. You felt comfortable, I scheduled the move, reserved elevator in my building. Suddenly in less than 24 hours before the move my building management notified me the move could not go forward. REASON: ELMER'S MOVING HAD** NO WORKMANS COMPENSATION INSURANCE**. Contacted Art he gave me multiple reasons why there was NO WORKMAN'S COMPENSATION INSURANCE. Everything fell thru, this caused a great deal of stress in our family, we couldn't move out on time, we could not coordinate with the building we needed to move into. Art had been given ample notice to get that insurance, he didn't have it when he did our moving estimate.???? If you have employees and are in business in the State of California, you are required to carry workman's comp.. CONSUMER BEWARE check for that Workmans Compensation Certificate. If an employee is injured on your property during a move you maybe paying for all their medical care., Sadly a cautionary tale. read more

The movers who came to do the work were hardworking, efficient, and professional. The customer service leaves much to be desired. The movers were an hour and a half late for our move and called a couple of times saying they were 45 min away and then no more than 30 min away. They arrived without the wardrobe boxes and seemed a bit frazzled. They told us Art was coming with the boxes and to help them move to make up time. Art arrived with wardrobe boxes about a half hour later and the boxes didn't have bars and some had trash in them and Art did not stay to help. They knocked a light fixture out of the ceiling which took out a chunk of drywall. We had to pay immediately and were told we would have the payment confirmation and invoice as soon as they ran our credit card but we didn't receive that for days until I contacted Art. When I reached out to Art after the move to share the feedback, he said he would check into it. I haven't heard back from him since (almost two weeks) including about repairing the light fixture. He was very responsive and friendly in setting up the move but once he had our money he's been very hard to reach. I would not recommend this company to a friend, there were many glitches overall that Elmer's doesn't seem to care about. read more

Our condo was flooded so we needed to get things to storage ASAP. My wife called a couple of movers that were either too busy or just flakes. When she called Elmer's, Art was available and ready to help us. We also needed a storage box/container for our belongings. After a failed attempt to get the right size, Art said he would make some phone calls for us. He was able to help us out within minutes. We had a company call us immediately.The right size container was delivered and his crew showed up. Immediately Eric and Derick (I hope I'm saying his name correctly) also known as D..... started to wrap the furniture and move it into the containers. Art went FAR above what was expected. His crew was also VERY attentive to our concerns and needs. Everyone that my wife and I dealt with were professional and helpful. If I could give Elmer's (Art and his crew) a 10 star I would. I would and will highly recommend Elmer's to anyone who needs moving of any kind........... GREAT JOB !!! read more
