It's great to see a Vietnamese restaurant in this area embrace modern concepts. Counter to the more traditional, most closest Viet restaurant, that's like a mile away, they don't use the bathroom as a storage facility (although that is a ghetto quirk I do enjoy). Their soupy staples are the Hu Tieu and Pho Ga, and I had the pleasure of trying their weekend creative special: Bun Bo Hue. I ordered the Hu Tieu because I was hungover and needed a clean broth but my friend got the Bun Bo Hue and it's legit. It's a spice level down from my mom's but the flavors are proportionately so. The Hu Tieu was pretty much what I'd expect, not strong but not bland. It's fine a line to be a light broth without tasting like water, so kudos. Another friend ordered the Thit Kho, which is porky belly slathered in a savory caramel sauce. It's the Viet dish for chubby chasers. It came in a sizzling cauldron, hot enough to burn your tongue. Because that's what happened. PSA: Be careful kids. Also, don't do drugs. I have yet to try the Banh Mis but I'm excited to report their experimentation with the sandwich. The first eye catcher on the menu is the Hamburger Banh Mi. Expect an update to this review when I come back for it. Tiny space similar to ramen places that basically don't give you any breathing room with your not-dining-together neighbors. Definitely not a place to really have a nice talk over a meal - felt like I had to whisper just so the strangers sitting next to me wouldn't be too overwhelmed by my work complaints to my bf! In terms of food though, everything was quite flavorless and didn't leave an impression. It wasn't a bad meal - just a very underwhelming meal for the $. Banh mi burger ($7.50): this is that fusion banh mi where it's an angus beef patty with cheese, but with the traditional viet veggies. One word: BLAND. The beef patty is a little juicy, but it lacked salt/pepper/anything! Very disappointed by this. Went to get pho to-go for a something nice and warm for the cold weather. Came up across Em after being somewhat close in the area. Debated between the Pho Bo Em vs the Hu Tieu. Got the Pho Bo Em, as the cashier recommend that. The broth, raw ingredients/meats were divided into different containers and bag, which is normal for to-go. After adding everything together, the meat did take a little bit to cook from the hot broth which resulted in a gamey texture. The broth was flavorful, everything tasted pretty fresh except the spearmint which you can tell was withering a little. I wish there was more of either the filet mignon or rib eye (not the thinly sliced meat one) since there were only about 2-3 quarter-small-sized pieces, that meat was already pre-cooked and was very tender. The cashier was friendly. There was a decent amount of wait for the order as I noticed online orders being called and picked up despite no one dining in. Would definitely come and try for something new again. Their banh mi's looked very unique, interesting, and not your average traditional, which is something I would come back to try. This place is definitely different from traditional Vietnamese restaurants. It has a limited menu with just 2 types of noodle and 4 types of Bahn mi. I normally eat beef pho from other restaurants but decided to give this place a try even tho it doesn't have beef pho. I tried both their noodles and the Bahn mi burger. The pho ga was pretty good. Flavorful broth. It comes with a slightly tangy/spicy green sauce that u can dip your chicken pieces in. When we asked for fish balls (+$1 charge), the guy said fish balls might alter the taste of the soup so he gave it to us in a separate bowl which was nice. They were pretty good with a nice bouncy texture. You get 2 fishballs for $1. The Hu tieu em was pretty good too. Also had a good flavorful broth. It tasted very similar to the noodles from Bo Ky in Chinatown. I also enjoyed the Bahn mi burger. I liked the slightly crispy bread, and the cheese. The Vietnamese cold coffee was on point as well. This isn't your typical pho spot. Your given two options. The pork broth which is a Chinese/ Cambodian style broth. And the other which is a chicken broth Vietnamese style. We ordered the hu tieu me which was pretty good but I didn't think it would taste like this. We both expected it to be a little bit similar to the original Vietnamese pho we are used to. But the broth was more Chinese style as it was decorated with Chinese chives. We also ordered the classic bahn mi which was kind of dry (?) we found out that it was missing the Vietnamese mayo that most places have. My partner enjoyed it but me having had tried the 8th ave bahn mi's were a bit disappointed. The summer rolls was your usual summer rolls. And we also got the Vietnamese coffee which never disappoints of course. Tasted super fresh and matched so well with their dipping sauce. Hands down, the best spring roll I have had. Smoothies are a bit pricy for their amount. Got a Summer of 69 smoothie, and the tropical flavors didn't disappoint. Their pho, though... while very well made with flavor, is not typical pho broth. It was missing the spice that most pho has. No star anise, no Vietnamese cinnamon, no roasted garlic, no roasted ginger. It was this clean, hearty chicken broth instead. The chicken pho has plenty of shredded chicken, and they have a green sauce that you are to dip the meats in. Customer service? Superb. read more

I had heard good things about this place all over the internet - friends' suggestions, ads, articles, etc. and was excited to finally be able to try it out. It took me a bit to find this restaurant, as it is off the main strip of the 86st commercial area, but when I did, I was delighted to be greeted by the wonderful forest of green. Send noodz? Definitely on board with that. To be transparent, I ordered takeout over the phone and got a response of, "okay, 3 minutes". I didn't test that out, but I figured any restaurant that was brazen enough to give a 3 minute waiting time was one that I was on board with. After taking a quick few snaps of the wonderfully different decor as compared to other Viet restaurants I've been to, I biked back to work and found the closest bucket to unload all of the goodies onto. If you're not familiar, pho doesn't warrant tiny bowls - not even the deep cereal variety will do. Among the contents of the noodle box was: the noodle, two pieces of shrimp, ground pork, some leek/scallion/chive leaves (a particularly happy surprise), a few slices of jalapeno, a generous heaping of bean sprouts, a lime wedge, and the spare ribs (Hue Tieu Em). I patiently awaited the 3 minute timer on the broth - noobs will forget this step; who wants warm broth? - before drowning my goodies in it. Before adding any additional hot sauce, I took a spoonful, blew at it with my breath, closed my eyes to maximize the sensory experience, and delivered it to my mouth. Wow. This broth was definitely different, but in a good way. It presents itself as much less sweet than other ones I have had in Brooklyn, but it was so much more flavourful and umame than I was expecting. It had more of a true connection to the pho I had in the streets of Hanoi than anywhere else I had been. I became an instant fan. I went back for lunch with hubby today at 12:30pm. Small spot and the waitress remembered me from my last visit. This time, we had chance to speak to the chef and the owner with great conversation. Gui Cuon- summer rolls were made by special request. Surprisingly this has no vermicelli in it but only shrimp, lettuce and cucumbers. But by no mistake, I like it as a low carb roll plus with its accompany sauce I really didn't mean the absence of the noodles. If only it has a basil leave in the roll would make it perfect. Hu tiem em- were one of their Pho they had on the menu. We ordered it in favor of the owner's recommendation. As mentioned with having a dry shrimp flavor on the broth. Indeed there was and its to my liking having its flavor as different from the other beef broth pho. This was unique and delicious. Banhi mi op la- were the 2nd other banhi mi on their menu- uniquely constructioned by a fried egg definitely made this stand out from the classic. I actually favor this one than the classic. Ingredients very nicely balanced. It won both I and hubby's taste buds over. Very friendly and humble staff. I promised to go back again next time with our kids as they introducing a new desert soon. We also got the Watermelon Cooler and Vietnamese Iced Coffee, which were delicious and refreshing. We loved the Banh Mi so much that I came back to order two more for take out. However, it is much better in house - piping hot, the bread was soft with a crunchy crust. Ingredients are a bit skimpy compared to other banh mi I've had before, but overall, still tasty. I wasn't a huge fan of the Pho Ga. I'm more of a fan of white meat and the shredded chicken had a tad too much skin and fat for my taste. Been having their noodles since they opened. It's been great all these years, but their quality has declined over the years (understandably due to covid). That said, noodles are still decent, but what annoys me is that the deliver driver doesn't seem to understand how to deliver. It takes over an hour to deliver every single time and without fail, my smoothie is always liquidy, noodles hardened, and I'd have to reheat the soup. I live literally 4 blocks away and can't leave for work, why does it take 1.5 hours+ to deliver something during non-busy hours? And I'm not exaggerating, I just received a call that the deliver driver is going to the opposite direction, and that it would take another 30 minutes on top of the 1 hour and 20 minutes I already waited. My boyfriend and I ordered one of each as well as an order of their small spring rolls. The pork pho was a little on the fishy side from the shrimp, but more flavorful than the chicken pho. The chicken pho came with some sort of lime/cilantro/jalapeño dip that I could not stop using. The spring rolls were different as they were made with the thinner spring roll skin instead of chewy kind that is usually offered. All in all, a clean and interesting restaurant. This place is going to be the cutest pho shop you'll ever go to. The walls are painted in a light green and are decorated with snapshots of bahnmi and pho. This is the perfect place for a date or small group (4 or less is definitely preferred). I came by on a Friday night with a party of 6. Luckily there was no wait, but they definitely needed to move tables to accommodate for our party. This place is SMALL (probably max 15 seats in total), but it fits the aesthetic. Regarding the food, I think that it is good. Not amazing, not horrible but good. I ordered the chicken pho and summer rolls and they were definitely alright (3/5). It is noteworthy that their presentation of their food is always on point. I gave this place an extra star due to the service. The waitresses were definitely very attentive and kind. My friend accidentally dropped the receipt into his finished bowl of pho and the waitress immediately printed a new receipt without us even asking. Wonderful attentive service. Chicken noodle soup with glass noodles, shredded chicken, scallions, onions, & cilantro Pho Bo Em ($12.00). Can't tell you how many times I've been disappointed when I check some place out in spite of reading reviews and the place is closed or not the same hype. I've tried the Banh Mi: - Em - classic, balanced, greater portion of pickled veggies to cold cuts. Light on the Mayo and pate. Two kinds of cold cuts. - Dac Biet - literally means special, has slightly stuff more than the Em, and can be quite filling - Nem - cured barbecue pork meat, just absolutely wonderful. My favorite one of all, always choose this one for my lunch/snack runs! - Bensonhurst - I feel like this is a very New York kind of thing where people want a breakfast sandwich but not on an everything bagel, but instead with beef or bbq and egg in a Vietnamese hoagie. *Growing up, I always had trung op la, or sunny side eggy, in my banh mi so this was homage to my childhood, but I love it better paired with pork bbq and scallion oil, so the Bensonhurst isn't my favorite among these but I gave it a shot* Overall, it's a great banh mi spot for the Bensonhurst neighborhood, but it falls short one star for me because I personally love a French bread and I feel that the banh mi composition used here is too... doughy/dense or something like that for lack of a better term. Of course, the bread should be crunchy on the outer and pillowy on the inside, but it's not quite aerated or soft, so the density of the bread is thicker than preferred. In addition, I would like more cold cuts/meats, but for the neighborhood price point, this is not too bad. They also have pretty good iced coffee, but I can't speak for anything else beyond sandwiches because I'm a creature of habit who knows what they want and rarely stray from it. Order ahead to save time, call and order to support local business because GrubHub by way of Yelp takes a commission fee when you place an order through them and I want to keep this place up and running, hence long review! We were looking for something light and full of fresh vegetables after our Thanksgiving indulgence, so we ordered from Em Vietnamese, a tiny spot in Bensonhurst that we'd been to before (pre-COVID) and liked. Previously, I primarily stuck to the cha gio (pork and shrimp spring rolls) and the soups, which are great, but this time in addition to the cha gio, we got goi cuon (summer rolls with shrimp) and banh mi dac biet (sandwich with cha lua (banana leaf pork), nem nuong (marinated pork), and pate in addition to the usual toppings of cucumber, cilantro, pickled carrots and daikon). The summer rolls were good, all the vegetables in the banh mi and rolls were very fresh, but the bread was a little hard and the pork wasn't as flavorful as some other spots I like for banh mi. I'll probably stick to the soups over the sandwiches, especially as the weather gets colder, since that clean, warming broth will be comforting for the cold winter days to come. read more
