Everyone in the area is so excited to see this theater reopen! We've all been waiting and were so happy to hear the rumors were true! So today we stopped in to see an early movie and check out the theater. So here is my honest review. The last time we were here was March 2020, less than 24 hours before everything shut down. The entire theater looks the same. Nothing appears to be new or improved. Which is fine, there was nothing wrong with the theater, pre-COVID. I was surprised to see not a single employee wearing a mask. No COVID safety protocols seem to be in place. For example, the employee handled my credit card, put it through the card machine herself, handed me a pen and asked me to sign for my purchase, and gave me an empty drink cup and had me fill my own drink in the public refill station. And yes, all these things are fine... pre-COVID. I'm fairly comfortable as is, so I wasn't bothered, but I've yet to see another business this far away from safety protocols being in place, especially when comparing to other movie theaters. So if you're not comfortable with things being as if there was never a pandemic, then don't come. Seats are not assigned nor socially distanced between parties. Masks are not required or suggested, whether vaccinated or not. The popcorn is TOTALLY different than it was at this theater before. And that's not a good thing. The popcorn texture seemed a bit stale, was not warm, and the butter was more oily than other theaters. It just didn't stick to the popcorn. The food prices were really steep too. The #1 combo with a large popcorn and large pop was $15 and change. And a small drink for a child, almost $6. That's insane. For one adult and one child to go to the movies before noon, it was $35. We didn't get any candy or anything special. Cinemark in Valpo is much more affordable for concessions and their popcorn is much better quality. Again, very disappointing because this theater had better popcorn than others under the previous ownership. The signage inside the theater isn't complete. No arrows to show you which theater numbers are on which side, so luckily I remembered from last time. But again, they just opened, so I'm sure they're still getting set up. On Fandango it said assigned seating and "rocker seats". No... just basic red velvet seats covered in fuzz from peoples' clothing. Which brings me back to the COVID cleanliness protocols (or lack there of), how do they clean the seats??? That's impossible with these. The lights were on and very bright in the theater. We couldn't even see the previews and then had to get up and tell an employee that the lights were still on, missing the first 5 mins of the movie, which also started late. The employee stated they were the cleaning lights. Whatever. Just annoying. Again, I know they're working out all the kinks since they just opened, but we were not very impressed. We miss the joys of this theater from before and are really hoping they'll work things out and get better. We will give it another try in a month or so. For now, we will stick to Cinemark in Valpo. Cheaper concessions, cleaner, feels safer (COVID wise), and they seem to know what they're doing. Edited to mention, both myself, my child, and the two others who came to the movie with us complained of feeling really ill from the popcorn. We just all felt off the rest of the day and continued to burp up the popcorn into the evening. None of us have ever had that type of reaction from popcorn. My sorority sister and I were targeted and experienced direct harassment and disrespect from the general manager Kevin Morgan. The lights went out and then a man walked up to my sorority sister and I and he loudly to We were startled because we did not know who this man was approaching us. He did not say his name nor tittle, he just walked up to us and it scared me. I said ok to the man because I did not know if he was a outraged movie goer and we wanted to remain safe. Once he walked away, I felt confused, humiliated and embarrassed. The movie began and I was not able to enjoy myself nor focus on the movie because I kept thinking about what just happened. Once the movie was over, my sorority admitted that she too was not able to enjoy the movie do to what happened. Before exiting the movie, we saw the man in the theatre alongside two movie theatre workers and thats when we realized he worked there. We then went up the stairs in the movie theatre to talk to the man. He saw us coming, exited the door while closing the door in our faces, instead of holding it for us. We opened the door and asked the man if he could please identify himself by name and title because he did not have a badge on or anything. The man then said he was the general manager and his name KEVIN MORGAN (general manager). I then explained to Mr.Kevin that I was not recording the movie on my phone, and that he ruined the experience for my sorority sister and I today. Mr Morgan then said he didnt ruin the movie for me because the movie hadnt started. I told Mr.Morgan that he can not say how his approach made us feel, and if the movie had just started that is proof to him that I was not recording the movie because there was nothing to record. Mr.Morgan then very nastily said, even if you dont record your phone must be put away inside your belongings and it is his job as manager to approach anyone who doesnt have there phone put away. My sorority sister and I felt targeted considering we were the only African Americans in the theatre and the other patrons who had there phones in there hands were not approached as we were. We told Mr.Morgan this and he disrespectfully giggled and smirked and said phone must be put away and I am PROUD of you for putting the phone away when I asked. I then told Mr.Morgan that although my sorority sister and I appear young, we are grown professional college educated women in our 40's and did not need to be told that he was proud of us like we were children. We then asked to see the policy stating that the phone must be put away in our belongings. Mr. Morgan said ok and took us to read the policy. As we thought, it is not in the policy that the phones must be put away in your belongings. We then expressed to Mr.Morgan that the policy did not read that we must put away phones in our belongings and he stated that the wording was off, but that is what it means. I stated to Mr.Morgan that it clearly does not say phone must be put away in belongings. I again told Mr.Morgan that I felt humiliated, targeted, harassed and that he ruined our experience. Mr.Morgan refused to give a apology he just continued to smirk and grin. I then expressed to Mr.Morgan that he should not treat movie goers in this way, when they spend alot of money for the movie and experience and that I planned to write reviews showing how my sorority sister and I were treated so poorly. Mr.Morgan then said "well go ahead and write your reviews, I am the general manager" very disrespectfully brushing us off. He never gave a apology to us and treated us as if we were trash. Mr.Morgan then stated to us that he was done with the conversation, to make sure we write our reviews, giggled and walked away. My sorority sister and I were in shock, belittled, humiliated, felt harassed and targeted. Mr.Morgan did not respect us as customers enough apologize for ruining our experience. I have never been treated like that at a theatre and I feel like there should be some repercussions for being treated so terribly. So disappointed I researched the seating and this theater advertised that it has recliner seats and that it's also an IMAX both are NOT true. What you do get is ugly ass uncomfortable seats that barely go back ridiculous will never go back read more
