I can't say enough good things about the folks at Emerald City Spinal Care! As a woman of color, I have always felt welcomed here which is, sad to say, not true for many other chiropractors I've been to. But Dr. Van & Dr. Zapata are both so warm that it was very easy to trust part of my healing process to them. I'm only halfway through my 6-month treatment plan to recover and hopefully heal some of the hip and back pain that I've had for years, and while I know I still have a long way to go, I can tell things are improving in my body alignment. I'm finding relief from my adjustments (and massages from their incredible massage therapist, Emily!) and it feels really good to be on the path to healing my body! I've been working with Dr. Z since August. I have struggled for most of my life with some form of neck and shoulder pain or another, which came to a head earlier this year. Before ever making an adjustment, Dr. Z did a full spectrum of tests and x-rays to show me something I never knew before - that one of my neck bones was severely out of alignment. Over the past six months I have followed Dr. Z's course of treatment, and at my most recent progress exam, my spinal alignment was significantly improved. I also no longer toss and turn in pain at night, and my neck mobility has increased tremendously. I also no longer feel urges to crack my neck or back! I still suffer from some chronic pain, but with the progress I've experienced so far, I feel like a new person. In addition to Dr. Z, the whole staff is incredible. Dr. Van has subbed in on some of my sessions, and her work is totally comparable. I also see Casey for massages - his neck and shoulder work is incredible. I have been a regular patient at Emerald City Spinal Care since Nov 2021. Dr Zapata treated my chronic lower back pain in a matter of weeks. I continue to visit once a month or more if needed. I rarely need to visit more than once a month though! The whole office is super friendly and they have the most flexible schedule I've ever experienced from a Dr office. Don't be fooled** I'm so sad to be updating my review as I did feel like the staff at Emerald City Spinal were all very kind. However there are just so many things that did not sit well with me after completing my 6 month program with them. I started having really intense neck pain about 2-3 years ago. It was getting to a point where I could no longer handle it on my own. I decided to contact Emerald City Spinal Care because of their pristine reviews. Dr. Zapata reached back out very quickly and offered a free video consultation. After hearing my concerns, she recommended that I be put on their 6 month program. She explained that most people think if you start going to the chiropractor, you would have to continue going forever but she designed this program so that her patients can actually get better and move on with their lives. I thought that was very cool and decided to put my trust in her. Dr. Zapata had me come into the office to explain the program and run some tests. After checking my insurance, she said that I would have to pay $1200 out of pocket which would be paid over the course of 6 months. She took some x-rays of my neck and checked my alignment. I never saw the x-rays my self but she said that my head was protruding forward and not straight on. She said she was confident that I would get better after completing the program which made me feel excited. After 3 months of seeing Dr. Zapata, at twice a week ~ once a week intervals, I was really starting to feel better. They were offering free Christmas presents to people who wrote reviews on Google or Yelp so I wrote a five star review then. However, after a few weeks, I tweaked my neck again. I continued to see Dr. Zapata in hopes that it would get better, though it never did. On March 4th, which was my last appointment of my 6 month program, Dr. Zapata was out of office. Dr. Van did my final exam and I explained to her that I'm still dealing with the same neck pain. She explained to me that this would be my last appointment and if I wanted to I could continue coming in for an additional cost. I asked her if she could relay the information to Dr. Zapata because I wanted to speak to her directly about my other options since she was my main doctor. Now it's been 10 days and I have not heard anything back from Dr. Zapata or anyone from the practice. I cannot help but feel like I was put on this very expensive program for nothing more than temporary relief of my pain. I am so disappointed that they really made me believe I was really going to get better and that there was absolutely no follow up since my last exam date. I have since seen my doctor at Swedish as well as a friend who is a neurosurgeon. I feel so stupid for not speaking to them first because they both said that chiropractors are usually seen just for temporary relief and that there are many peer reviewed articles that points out the dangers of chiropractic adjustments including strokes! They also thought it was odd that they did not do an x-ray at the last appointment of my visit to see if my neck had improved from all of their adjustments. My neurosurgeon friend also said to not confuse chiropractors for spine doctors (neurologist or orthopedist) and that there are some patients that actually end up getting even worse after seeing chiropractors. I guess I'm better off seeing a physical therapist instead, but this was a very expensive lesson for me! read more

I thought long and hard about leaving this review but others need to know . I specifically went to a person of color to get the help I needed with my back and I thought it would be a better interaction. The first red flag for me was. The assumption of my financial status and assuming I would have issues paying for their services . It's just classless . I came there because I was not happy about my back and it was causing me pain but I was received with bias and insults . There was an air of oh they do this kind of attitude . They being a Latina . I say this because visibly you can assume I am either Mexican or indigenous. There was no change in biases and there were no change in understanding situations . It was just disappointed by the customer service . Any converse as met with bias and anger and I was confused why . I am Autistic so I don't say much especially with others in a room . I'm spending more time trying to maintain my energy levels that I did not need some personal bias that I didn't know anything about . It's a toxic environment and I figured since I signed a contract for the service I tried to just keep going . Don't say much just go and do what they ask and it became worse and worse . The environment increasingly became awkward and I had no idea why . Their responses are ran by bias per your race and the assumption were so apparent it changed the way I was being treated . I don't recommend them if you are a person of color or looking to alleviate any emito al pain do to physical pain . They just added to the problem . To the point I became so stressed out when I was there and when I was being looked at . Mind you I always said thank you have a good day and not much else so when I had something real to say the owner was very defensive and started attacking me in a passive aggressive way . I was trying to figure out what else why my issue with my body almost a debriefing my symptoms so I could make and educated decision and she kept repeating herself that she wasn't a medical dr over and over . Almost as though she was fed up with other patients and taking out on me . It was so bad I almost started crying . I finally decided regardless of the contract or I was in pain . I would rather not feel more stress form the place I was visiting to relieve my pain. It just super unfortunate. I had high hopes . read more

Everyone at the office was pleasant to deal with, but the approach to billing and the presentation of a 6 month extensive treatment plan (!) after a "free" assessment left a negative impression. Typically after ordering a test or x-Ray, most medical professionals I've encountered will review what the test means -- instead, my experience here was that I was first encouraged to take X-rays (ultimately paying for 6 in total...) and was charged a separate office fee for their interpretation, which is separate from any treatment fee. I came in because of the offer of a free assessment but ended up paying $200 or so -- lesson learned :/ read more

I started coming to Emerald City Spinal Care at the beginning of Covid after adopting some pretty bad work from home habits. The staff is incredibly friendly. The range of motion in my neck is improving and my back has been feeling much better. Dr. Zapata spends ample time with each patient and is very patient in answering questions. My coworker referred me to this place and I'm so glad she did! :) The office manager, Ashley, is so sweet and goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome when you walk in. She knows I consistently get my massages with Candace and would text me whenever there is an open spot (Candace usually is booked 2 weeks out). Speaking of Candace, she is also wonderful and DEFINITELY knows how to massage. I would tell her my problem areas and when I come out from her session, my body is relaxed like jell-O. She also remembers and tailors her massage to your previous sessions - talk about knowing your clients. Sad news tho she is moving to a PT clinic by end of Dec; however, I'm excited for the other masseuse that is coming in. Words can not Express how AMAaaaaaaaaaaaZING Candace is. I thought after the few handfuls of messages she would eventually give in and be a hit n miss, like most massage therapist. Very rarely can you find a good one, yet alone a consistent one. Every single time she gets all the right spots and pressure points, and even throws out there a name or 2 of the muscle shes working on. I have been going to Emerald City Spinal Care for nearly three years and I can easily say Dr. Zapata as well as the massage therapists here are the best I've ever experienced. After just a couple months the periodic headaches, occasional migraines, and constant low back pain I've had for most of my life completely went away. I had seen several chiropractors in the past but none had been able to solve these issues. Dr. Zapata is an incredibly gentle chiropractor who only adjusts as necessary yet, as I and others have mentioned, also delivers impressive results. Over the course of my initial care plan we started at the top of my spine and slowly worked down it straightening everything out.
