Especially nice were the individually prepared hot breakfasts. But what really made our stay remarkable was the Innkeeper Josie, who truly went out of her to make our stay enjoyable as well as comfortable. We had an early morning flight out of SFO and she got up early to prepare our breakfast at 6:30 so we could depart by 7. This was way, way above the expected. Kudos to her. We had a fabulous 3 night stay while in town visiting family. House was well appointed, inviting main level common areas, great layout with all suites upstairs. We were able to come and go in this centrally located neighborhood area close to stores & restaurants; easy access to freeway. The house is peaceful, beautifully decorated, and quiet. Although there were other guests, we only came across one other person in passing on the stairs. Plenty of parking in the driveway. Only small thing that could be improved was the outdoor deck furniture cushions of our suite could have used a good cleaning but I suppose it's a little more difficult to keep fabric clean outside. We had the tasty made-to-order breakfast two of the three mornings (saw the resident squirrel scrambling all over in the trees), innkeeper Ann was talkative and extremely accommodating. We also met Maria our last morning, great cook. We have already decided to stay here on our next trip to the Bay Area.

I opted for the Courtyard many for Bonvoy purposes, but I wasn't sure how the walk to my conference would be. It was at the Fox Theater and basically about one mile away, but when in California, you never know how sketchy a walk can be. As it turns out, zero percent sketchy. As for the hotel itself, it had free parking, which was nice because I had a rental car and a friend that stopped by to visit. However, I ended up getting a note that I parked somewhere I wasn't supposed to, and was completely confused about that because I parked where everyone else did and there was no signage saying my spot was forbidden. Oh well. The lobby had a "restaurant" with a few items and coffee, as well as a small area with drinks and snacks. Once in the room, it wasn't overly impressive, but did the job. The biggest drawback for me were the tiny pillows (I still don't know anyone who prefers a small pillow over a long one. But when I asked for a couple extras, they were normal sized, so I was able to create a makeshift body pillow out of those. The shower had good pressure and got super hot, so no notes there. There was a small couch, which was perfect because I wanted to watch an NBA playoff game while I was in here and am glad I didn't have to do so from the bed. The only part that left a bad impression was check in. The employee helping us assumed the two people behind us were part of our reservation and made a comment about there only being room for two. Since we had reserved a room with a sofa bed, the comment felt unnecessary and made for an awkward first impression. Everything else was great. The continental breakfast was clean and well stocked with hot and cold options, and the employee working the breakfast area did an excellent job keeping everything organized. The coffee wasn't my favorite, and I wish the TVs were smart TVs instead of cable only, but those were minor things. Check out was quick, and the front desk employee that morning was very friendly. My room key card was glitchy and I had to go back down to the lobby twice during my stay to get it re-programmed when it wouldn't work. The room itself was good! The bed was more firm than I'd like, but it did include a minifridge, microwave, and good, strong hot water. My room was above the lobby and faced the street, which got to be pretty loud in the morning. The drapes also didn't completely block out the light... I like to sleep in pitch black darkness so I wished they were better, true blackout coverings. The staff members I talked to were super nice, accommodating and helpful. It was a mixed bag. The following are my observations of the +'s and -'s. There was a small…read morekitchenette with a full-sized fridge, two-burner stovetop, sink, and tiny microwave. Aside from that the furnishings were fairly standard. We had a king size bed, and there was a pullout sofa sleeper that we didn't use. The bathroom was adequately clean. The good: 1) Our room was adequately clean and furnished. 2) A simple continental breakfast is offered (from 6:30 to 9 currently), including items such as: Coffee, tea, instant oatmeal, granola bars, and single-serve individually wrapped muffins similar to Otis "I probably dip all my muffins in a vat of vegetable shortening so that they never age" Spunkmeyer. 3) There are food and drink vending machines available in the lobby. The bad: 1) The bed was not comfortable at all. My wife and I tossed and turned frequently. There was some kind of cover on the mattress that crinkled loudly with every movement, and the bed linens felt like window curtains in that they were thin and noisy. 2) Even though you are paying for a room at the hotel, you still have to BUY a daily parking permit if you have a car. 3) Most of the basic silverware, tableware and kitchenware you could ask for is available upon request at the desk. Understandably, the rooms are not pre-stocked because it would be impossible to keep track of the inventory. What blows my mind here is that when I requested a wine key and a bottle opener the first time, they requested that I return them ASAP the following morning. The next night I just requested a bottle opener and the attendant was asking how long I would need it for that same night. They both mentioned that these were the only ones of these items that were available for the entire hotel, which is completely ridiculous. It's almost like saying you have silverware available upon request, but occupants only have 10 minutes to use a set because there is only one available for the whole hotel. On the 3rd night I was finally told that I could keep the can opener for the rest of our stay. 4) The tub drain was so slow that there would be a few inches of standing water well after we were done showering. The only way I could get the water to drain at a snail's pace was by jiggling the drain plug like crazy to temporarily loosen up whatever gunk had collected down there in what must be an absence of routine maintenance. 5) The wifi is free but it is terrible. We brought along a Roku and after jumping through several hoops to get it up and running, the bandwidth was too low for us to watch anything. It seemed as though every other time I passed the desk (and I made frequent trips ferrying my family's belongings up and down from the room) there was somebody complaining to the desk attendants. Red flags to me were people asking to contact the manager, and attendants saying that an unspecified problem (I didn't hear what the issue is) is a frequent and regular concern. Apparently this place has some recurrent and serious issues. I can't say that the place is horrible, but it has a lot more downsides than upsides from what I saw over the four nights we stayed.

Disappointing Stay - Several Issues That Need Attention…read more Unfortunately, our overall stay at Extended Stay America in San Carlos was less than desirable. There were several issues throughout our stay that significantly impacted our experience. One of the biggest concerns was the noise. Dogs were barking on multiple nights, making it difficult to sleep. We notified the staff and also specifically requested to speak with management about the situation. Unfortunately, no manager ever followed up with us. The lack of urgency from the staff was disappointing, especially after we brought the issue to their attention. The cleanliness of the room also left much to be desired. The floors were sticky and appeared as though they had not been properly mopped, which was not the level of cleanliness we expected. We were also not informed at the time of booking that the property was being used as a shelter for homeless veterans. While we have absolutely no issue with supporting veterans or individuals in need, this is important information that guests should be made aware of before booking so they can make an informed decision about their accommodations. Additionally, we were not informed that the property was undergoing construction. Construction was another factor that affected the overall experience and should have been disclosed when making the reservation. Finally, the beds were extremely uncomfortable, making it even more difficult to get a good night's sleep, particularly given the noise issues. Overall, the lack of communication, cleanliness concerns, noise, uncomfortable beds, construction, and lack of management follow-up made this a disappointing stay. We expected better communication and customer service and hope management takes these concerns seriously.
