My wife & I, my son and his wife and their daughter stayed in three rooms at the Inn the end of last month. All of us had a truly great experience. The Inn is charming and full of immenities (including Tums). Our rooms were very tastefully furnished and the beds great. The common areas were all inviting. Especially nice were the individually prepared hot breakfasts. But what really made our stay remarkable was the Innkeeper Josie, who truly went out of her to make our stay enjoyable as well as comfortable. We had an early morning flight out of SFO and she got up early to prepare our breakfast at 6:30 so we could depart by 7. This was way, way above the expected. Kudos to her. First time staying at an actual Bed & Breakfast; this place hit it out of the park! No online reservations, must email or call to reserve. We had a fabulous 3 night stay while in town visiting family. House was well appointed, inviting main level common areas, great layout with all suites upstairs. We were able to come and go in this centrally located neighborhood area close to stores & restaurants; easy access to freeway. The house is peaceful, beautifully decorated, and quiet. Although there were other guests, we only came across one other person in passing on the stairs. Plenty of parking in the driveway. Only small thing that could be improved was the outdoor deck furniture cushions of our suite could have used a good cleaning but I suppose it's a little more difficult to keep fabric clean outside. We had the tasty made-to-order breakfast two of the three mornings (saw the resident squirrel scrambling all over in the trees), innkeeper Ann was talkative and extremely accommodating. We also met Maria our last morning, great cook. We have already decided to stay here on our next trip to the Bay Area. read more

This is a hidden jewel. I stayed in the zinfandel suite and I absolutely loved it. Spacious, clean, and a bed warmer!! From making my reservations, through the whole stay, I felt taken care of. I had a fabulous experience and I can't wait to go back! From the moment I walked in it was perfect. Such a beautiful, spacious and impeccably clean room. The common areas are beautiful. The views of trees and garden from every window were serene. Ann, the innkeeper is friendly but unobtrusive. She went the extra mile to mail back the glasses I'd left on the patio, and made a delicious breakfast to order for me. Next time I'll ask for more pancakes, they were so good! My wife and I needed a place for a few days and we were directed here. From the street we thought that we were lost for a minute. The Atherton Inn is off the main thoroughfares yet close to just about anything you could need. In fact, the location is so convenient that I rode my bike everywhere I needed to be. When we arrived, we were told to make ourselves at home by Ann, our host. I did that immediately. The first thing I noticed was that this didn't have hotel furniture. It really felt like I was at a friend's house. The furniture was comfortable. The temperature was comfortable. Everything about the house was intuitive. There was tea and coffee available as well as a fruit bowl and the things that you'd have in your own kitchen. everything was inviting as well. The neighborhood is very safe, and it was QUIET. I was sure that I was the only person in the house. As it happened, all of the suites were booked. There wasn't any of the usual road noise that you may get at a hotel on the main drag. The seemingly elusive commodity of quiet and peacefulness is here. The rooms are spacious, and the bed was very comfortable. We had a gas fireplace, but the temps were such that we chose not to use it. We did most of our dining (other than breakfast) outside on the back patio while watching the hummingbirds. The grounds are well kept and again comfortable. The rooms like the rest of the house were well laid out. We had everything we needed. Laundry was available if we needed as well as a refrigerator and microwave. All of the rooms are upstairs. There's an elevator for those who may have mobility issues and low shower curbs. Since it was a bed and breakfast I was looking forward to that part. Depending on the day, Ann or Maria will make your breakfast to order. There are no heat lamps! We enjoyed the company of the other guests, and nobody felt rushed. There was a lot of thought put into the layout of this house, and it was evident in the week we spent there. So, the short version here is: The accommodations were comfortable, and everything worked. Would we stay here again? yes, we will. read more

This is a perfect B&B! The rooms are cozy but huge! The bathrooms are modern, so you don't have to suffer the "authenticity" of ancient plumbing. The manager is kind and accommodating. And best of all, the breakfast is superlative and sumptuous! Nothing merely "Continental" and merely carbs about it. They make everything to order on the spot and the chef is fabulous. A great find. Overall, a quality choice for lodging on the peninsula. The property is well kept and has a cozy neighborhood charm about it. The host, Erica, was warm and welcoming and all too eager to show us the accoutrements of her inn. So, why the deducted star? Well, like many aging baby boomers, Erica, is not immune to growing aloof. Upon our timely check in, Erica was elsewhere and our key to our room was not left out as promised. Luckily, a short phone call and our reassurance to Erica thar our reservation was indeed with her inn and not another establishment as she suggested, prompted her recent, but obviously faded memory of the reservation we made a month earlier. As a side note, Redwood City is known for having one of the highest occurrences of rape in the Bay Area. Fortunately, neither myself nor husband befell to this alarming trend, however, we did not escape our stay completely unscathed by crime. After straightening things out with Erica, we put the remains of our lunch which was packaged in a doggie bag in one of the generously provided guest refrigerators. After retiring upstairs to consummate our stay, we returned downstairs famished, eagerly awaiting the remains of our lunch, only to find them missing! We couldn't help but be perplexed as to who had taken the items as the house is extremely quiet and almost without any foot traffic from guests. What an odd environment to find an opportunistic food thief in the market for the remains of someone's clam chowder and quarter of a crab cake. The mystery of the missing food captivated the rest of our stay and eclipsed our other activities throughout. Curiosity got the best of me and I conducted a somewhat thorough, covert investigation as to what befell the missing food items. Searching all trash receptacles on the premises all to no avail. If you have any information, please contact the Redwood City Police at (650) 780-7100. After the initial bewilderment and shock of the aforementioned crime, we decided to settle in for the night and before ascending to our quarters, we opted to partake in an evening tea. We prepared the tea that Erica had graciously made us aware of. My husband decided to use some of the provided half and half. Just as a precaution, I checked the expiration date and to my horror, it was expired by 3 days! I warned my husband in the adjacent room just in the nick of time. To think what could have been if he had consumed the expired dairy product for his belly was full of fried seafood and the likes. Not a pleasant scenario for a weekend getaway. The rest of our stay was very pleasant as we retired into our luxurious bed with unusually soft sheets. When we awoke, we descended for our breakfast and were greeted by the inn's housekeeper and cook. She promptly prepared us a light and delicious breakfast. We needed 2 rooms. We were 2 couples and we were leaving the next day for a 2 week vacation out of San Francisco. We didn't want to pay the outrages prices there so decided to drive a little out of town and save $$. A beautiful location and city. This place was perfect. Not too far off the freeway. Friendly check in. The room was very spacious and clean. We were not too far from downtown Redwood City which we discovered was having a street fair so instead of driving to San Francisco to explore, we stayed close to the hotel. It offered free parking, which is unheard of in San Francisco. Upon arrival they had some flavored water offered in the breakfast area, which was refreshing. In the morning they had great breakfast included. Perfect way to start off our vacation. I would recommend. read more

We left and got the heck out of there the first night. We were willing to eat two nights rates to go somewhere else. This was a disaster. And not friendly or warm or accommodating whatsoever. I think someone from this house must be messing with the reviews because there's no way this place has 5 stars. There are way too many rules and regulations.It felt like We were staying at a cranky old aunts house where you can't eat upstairs or in the room. There's actually a sign that says " please take off your makeup before going to sleep". This is not a cozy bed and breakfast this is someone who had no idea how to start a business behind this. Probably received he home in a divorce and wanted a new business to make money. Honestly I could go on about the many uncomfortable thing about this place. I recently recommended Atherton Inn to my brother, sister in law, and nieces and I am so glad I did! They live on the east coast. My family was thrilled when they visited during early April of 2022 and the location is absolutely the BEST especially since I live in Redwood City. They kept commenting on how spacious, clean, and beautiful the inn was. I met the owner, Tricia, briefly through NextDoor when I purchased a rug from her and she supported my daughter with a donation when she was doing a school project in 2021. Once I found out that she was the owner of the beautiful Atherton Inn, I asked her for information and passed that on to my family. My brother commented that he would like to stay again at the Atherton Inn when coming this November for Thanksgiving. Yesterday morning, My family's home had a fire and thankfully we are all safe, but there was a fair amount of damage. We spent the night at the Atherton Inn and it couldn't have been nicer. After spending the previous night not getting any sleep, the inn was a breath of fresh air. The woman who greeted us (I'm sorry that I don't remember her name) couldn't have been more wonderful. She was already familiar with what was going on with my family and took great care to make us comfortable. The room (Merlot) was huge, with King sized bed, massive TV, and ample bathroom space. It was nice to be able to sit down and relax in a nice bed after such a difficult day. The made to order breakfast the next morning was wonderful with all of the amenities of home. I would absolutely recommend the Atherton Inn to anyone, out of towners or locals looking for a relaxing staycation. I also plan to rent out the entire place for my 2018 wedding so that some of my guests can enjoy the comforts of home. read more

I stayed at the Atherton Inn for two nights recently and it was a wonderful experience. Anne, the innkeeper, was very warm and welcoming and made sure I had everything I needed. All five rooms are on the second floor, but there is an elevator in addition to the spectacular curving staircase. The rooms are extremely spacious, all with step-in tiled showers, and one of the rooms also has a two person Jacuzzi tub in addition to the shower. I booked close to the dates of my stay, so I stayed one night in the Jacuzzi tub room and another night in a different room. Each one was well appointed, with thick pillow top king beds, down pillows, fireplace, comfortable reading chairs, small desk, plugs for recharging mobile devices, and lots of maps and information about local points of interest. The common area rooms on the first floor are beautiful and very large, as is the bay windowed dining room. Breakfast was served at 7 am for me each day, and I could choose whatever I wanted from the chalkboard items (the scrambled eggs and bacon were delicious, and so was the cinnamon raisin French toast). They have a large lazy susan in the middle of the large dining table that seats 8 people, with various condiments arrayed on it including blue agave syrup for my French toast. The orange juice was amazing as well. Parking is very easy, in the driveway in front of the large garage doors and steps away from the front entrance. I didn't see the beautiful gardens but I'm sure I will when I return. Tourists, locals looking for a nice stay-cation, or working people (I was one of the latter) would feel right at home at the Atherton Inn. I highly recommend it, and if you want a particular room, be sure to book far enough ahead as this inn is fast becoming known as the loveliest, most reasonably priced and beautiful accommodation in the area! read more

I am finally getting around to reviewing this wonderful alternative to the Marriott. My room was spacious and well designed. Best travel experience I have had in a long time. What sets the Atherton Inn apart is what is outside of your wonderful room. The common area you share with the other guests is welcome and inviting. This is THE place to stay in Redwood City area!~ My husband and I spent new years eve here and have to say, even though we live close, I want to go back for the unbelievably great bed, the warmth of the owners, and the close proximity to places we like to go. Breakfast was delicious, the wine the evening previous, all of the great options for 'help yourself' including those chocolates!! The price is no more than a hotel... (they also upgraded us since they had a cancellation - nice surprise!) there are no negatives at all about the Atherton Inn. I look forward to the next beautiful nights sleep there. read more

I recently stayed 8 nights of comfort at the Atherton Inn. Every evening I returned it felt like I was coming home. My room 'The Cabernet' was very large with a small cozy deck. I sat out on the deck every evening enjoying the fresh California air, while enjoying the fireplace with its warmth and ambiance. The breakfast was well prepared and customized to each guests tastes. Every morning was a treat to meet the new and re-occurring guests and listening to their stories. The location was perfect for our needs and a short trip to San Fran. The Atherton Inn is my "go to" place to stay when I am in the Silicon Valley area, which is 4-6 times per year. It truly feels like a "home away from home". This B&B should NOT be confused with the Atherton Park Inn & Suites, which is a low rent hotel. I cannot say enough good about this sweet B&B, which is tucked away in a residential area just inside the Redwood City limits. The house is a new construction with all the upscale amenities one might expect in a luxury home. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and well provisioned. The made-to-order breakfasts are great. All bedrooms are on the second floor, but don't worry about carrying heavy suitcases upstairs: there's a small elevator for that purpose and for the disabled. Anne is a wonderful inn keeper, who makes you feel very welcome. The overall value cannot be beat. read more

We spent a night in the Merlot room here to celebrate our anniversary locally. We had a wonderful time! The hosts, Tricia and Jim, were lovely. The environment is very laid back. The rooms are beautiful-- very large, with nice amenities (including the gas-lit fireplaces). The beds are luscious, as well. They also have nice touches so you can still have the benefits of being in a home-like environment: coffee, tea, and snacks available, fridge space, a dvd collection. It was a nice place to use as a home base from which we could explore the Peninsula. One of the best things was the breakfast in the morning. They had a fancy espresso machine, as well as regular/ decaf coffee and an assortment of nice teas, plus fresh-squeezed oj. Jim made us pancakes, bacon, eggs, and waffles, all of which was really tasty and generous portions too. No complaints. I thought this B&B struck the perfect balance of having the benefits of a home environment but the freedom and treat of not ACTUALLY being in your own home. read more

Atherton Inn is located in a quiet little suburb of Redwood City, just near a post office and other small stores. It is a wonderful house with spacious rooms, delicious breakfasts, and it is very convenient to Stanford and Silicon Valley. The house is just gorgeous, and everything was very pleasant. There was always available coffee and tea, as well as fresh fruit and, oddly enough, M&Ms on the counter. The innkeeper, Anne, was so kind and very welcoming. She always had an answer to any Inn related questions, and she charges a very low price for such high quality treatment. I would most certainly stay here again! Absolutely spectacular! My parents have been coming here for years and I recently stayed with them for my sister's recent graduation from Stanford. Frankly, it's idyllic-- it's a beautiful home located in a serene residential area and the accommodations are superb.
