Essentially, a man named Harvey Fite single-handledly took over 60 acres of Saugerties and built a giant bluestone sculpture in the center of it. The beauty of the walls, the paths, the pools...it's worth checking out. The scale is incredible when you realize one man did it all himself, including hoisting the 14 foot, 9 ton stone he called FLAME in the center. Opus 40 hosts concerts, nature talks and walks, events, and more at this beautiful, serene space, so check those out. And if you're more inclined, just do what my mom and her friends do often (what I've only done once so far), and walk the grounds and take it all in.

Main building houses their jewelry- from brass-made, sterling, beads, bracelets, etc. Another building, has woven items and other knick-knacks. Crafts People showcases local artists and their unique creations. We stopped by and picked up a necklace for our daughter and my hubby surprises me with a funky Copper and Turquoise necklace. It was quite off putting, especially because my husband was literally looking at her with no interest in the furniture, no food or drinks in her hands, not acting rambunctiously, just sitting on a, again, not-cordoned-off chair. No signs that say, "do not touch", "do not sit", or anything. I'm pretty sure if I sat there, it would've been fine and I'm 4 times her weight. After telling off my kid, he went back to ignoring us by the register, not looking up from whatever he was reading. I lost interest in the cases, accessories, and furniture. Dogs on leashes were in the store (no complaint from me; love me some doggoes) and no one was chasing after them to not touch the furniture. Whatever bad experiences they've had with other children is no excuse to embarrass my child or make her feel like she did anything wrong, and yes, the tone clearly made her feel that way despite us cooly, and quietly leaving.

5/19- 5/20/26 Visits:…read more -5/19/26: We came for the special Fredrick Church 200th b-day exhibit. The paintings were wonderful to view. I'm taking one star off. The male tour guide was underwhelming to say the least. He did admit that it was his first tour. I believe for Church's 200th birthday exhibition, a paying customer would've expected the guide to give an overview on the artist and a description of his paintings. All we received was a a person walking the group into a couple rooms. I even tried to question him about one of the paintings. He basically threw the question back at me. -5/20/26: We took an electric car tour throughout the 5 mile narrow hilly estate. Price $40 and totally worth it! Ellen was our tour guide and driver. Brava to Ellen! She was extremely thorough and knowledgeable about the entire Fredric Church estate. A wonderful gift shop is available on the premises.

What a miracle this place is, really. Fascinating, meaningful programming and events. I find myself thinking that there might not be another place quite like this anywhere on the planet; it truly deserves the word "unique". We love to browse the art gallery before or after a show and, embarrassingly, have yet to check out the bookstore. Sure, some of the seating isn't plush but there's couch type seating and if you're a movie lover who focuses on more than your hiney, there's plenty to love. Don't just go, join and support this treasure of an institution. My only gripe, which may not be real, is that someone told me there was a swing dance event here and I didn't hear about it.

This review is limited to the used book store that TSL operates - in short, it's among the very…read morebest used book stores I have a visited in quite some time, and that's really saying something. They have an extensive number and wide range of books, including art books, most in very good or better condition. The organization is largely by subject (and even then, assignment to a particular subject area seems somewhat whimsical), but within categories, they are not well sorted - so it does take some time to browse. Pricing is a very modest flat fee, given the condition and rarity of some titles (currently $4 per hardcover, $3 per paperback). Thus it's possible to find many titles, including first editions, well under typical pricing found elsewhere. The staff people are really nice. When bagging up my purchase, one of the larger tomes ripped the paper bag slightly, so the staff person got some gaffer's tape to repair the bad and prevent it from continuing to rip apart.
