There are far too many fantastic restaurants in Rome to waste your time and money at this place. Unfortunately, this was easily our worst dining experience during our time in Rome, and the food was only part of the problem. Both of our pasta dishes were extremely salty, to the point that they were difficult to eat. One person in our group sent his pasta back and clearly said no when the server offered to replace it with a pizza. The server asked again. And again. And again. Four times in total, despite being told no each time. Eventually, he agreed simply to end the back-and-forth and ultimately ate only one slice of the pizza. We were then charged for the pizza. The food was disappointing, but the owner's response was much worse. Rather than simply acknowledging that two customers found their meals excessively salty, the owner insisted that the pasta was not salty and spoke to us in an extremely rude and demeaning manner. He even told us that this is simply how "Roman food" is made. I have lived in Rome myself, and after spending several days here during this trip, I can confidently say that excessively salty food is not some defining characteristic of Roman cuisine. We have had excellent meals throughout Rome, which made the owner's response even more frustrating. The owner also repeatedly defended the server by telling us that he was "the best server." To be clear, we never blamed the server. In fact, I told the owner directly that I agreed, the server was not the problem. The problem was the owner's refusal to take any responsibility for the food being served and his dismissive and condescending attitude toward perfectly reasonable customer feedback. As we were leaving, one of the staff members approached us, apologized for the experience, and made a particularly telling comment: he explained that the owner is not very receptive to feedback. Based on our interaction that evening, that assessment certainly seemed accurate. Looking at the restaurant's ratings being consistently in the low 80s across the major review categories, our experience unfortunately makes those scores much easier to understand. A bad dish can happen at any restaurant. What separates a good restaurant from a bad one is how the problem is handled. We weren't looking for an argument, a refund, or special treatment. We simply expected the restaurant to listen when we said our food was excessively salty and respond professionally. Instead, we were made to feel as though we were the problem. Rome has an incredible food scene. There are countless restaurants where your time, money, and feedback will be appreciated. Based on our experience, this is not one of them. read more

Packed full of tourists, we were too hungry to care about anything except the food and wine - which was good! But severe sticker shock ensued when we got the bill - our server had very enthusiastically recommended a porcini mushroom salad - shame on us for not asking the price. But 30 euros??? In Rome, one of the most popular tonda pizzerias is Emma Pizzeria. Emma is located on a busy corner just a few blocks from the Campo de' Fiori. Inside, the off-white walls are minimally decorated with abstract artwork. Tiny dark-wood tables are pressed closely to upholstered chairs and half-booths, and the bustle around the open pizza oven dominates a background of light instrumental music. Even on a weeknight, don't be surprised to find all of the reservations scooped up. My mother and I arrived for a late dinner, and we were fortunately seated immediately. The servers were fluent in English, and our waiter quickly directed us toward some exciting dinner options. We began our meal with the made-in-house Suppli, a cross between an arancini and a mozzarella stick. The thick, breaded cylinder of tomato-sauced risotto was stuffed with gooey cheese and fried extra crispy. The pizzas were even better. Across both pies, the pizza was uncut, and the ultra-thin crust sported a leopard-spotted bottom. Furthermore, the cornicone was uniquely flavorful on its own. Our favorite pie was the Chorizo, topped with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and rich salami. The accompanying Fiori di Zucca was no slouch, either, although the generous portion of mozzarella and spinach-esque zucchini flower weighed down the paper-thin crust. Service was efficient -- our server quickly presented our check when asked; however, more relaxed diners continued to linger without any objection from the staff. A single hungry diner could reasonably down a whole pie with room to spare, but two modest appetites might do better splitting an antipasti and a single pie. At $35 across the fritti and 2 pies, Emma's prices put American individual-sized specialty pies to shame. We walked into Emma after a long day of travel and exploring Rome as it was very near our AirBNB. What an amazing surprise and wonderful end of our day. Chris, our server, was exceptional and offered many suggestions for food, which were all well received and tasted delicious. The restaurant was a fantastic space for our group of 8 (4 adults & 4 pre-teens) and the menu offered something for everyone; so much that our kids have already asked to dine there again before we leave Rome. My hubby and I had a few hours in Rome and decided to give Emma Pizzeria a try for lunch while visiting. They were busy when we arrived. Definitely a spot that seems to be popular for both tourists and locals. It was a hot, summer day and the only seating option available for a party of two was in their outside patio area. Although it was hot, the restaurant had a nice overhead covering for the outdoor seating that allowed a decent breeze to flow through the area and keep patrons cool. The food was delicious and the service was attentive. An overall positive first visit. Everything we tried was fantastic. Went to Emma Pizza Tuesday night. I've been there in the past and loved it. Something is definitely different. It was not good at all. We were with a group of five and went here on my recommendation. We ordered the suppli which was delicious. Then a cheese plate which was good/ average. We then ordered four pizzas. They were terrible. The dough in the past was soft and pillowy. Not anymore. It was crispy like a cracker. I even looked back at pictures from the last time I was there. There was no comparison. I was actually embarrassed that I recommended we eat here and told the group I loved their pizza here. I don't know if they changed ownership but something is different. The service was spot on, the restaurant has lots of seating, and the food is outstanding. This was our favorite food we had in Rome when we visited for a week. The restaurant is very big on the inside and they are busy with locals which tells you all you need to know! We were seated and ordered a glass of wine and some pizzas within a few minutes. The food and wine was out in about 15-20 minutes. Wow the pizzas here are next level. They are not greasy like our American junk and they are thin crust oven baked. I had the Bufala e Prosciutto which was basically ridiculously fresh prosciutto piled on top of delicious Bufala cheese.
