During our tour break near the coliseum, we chose to eat at Alle Carrette for lunch. They had tables inside and outside but we chose in, since it was a warm day. We were seated immediately and offered drinks soon after. Our server's English was not very solid, so when my wife ordered a 1/2 liter of Chardonnay, she was brought champagne. I stuck with still water. We each ordered a pizza. She said they were personal sized but they were Americas version of a medium pizza. My wife got a gluten free ham and cheese and I got tagliatelle cherry tomato and prosciutto. I didn't taste hers but mine was exceptional. It was lightly sauced and loaded with cheese and meat. We found this place leaving a coliseum tour. We saw this establishment tucked away down an alleyway. We figured let's try this place instead of those big giant patio places on the main street. The restaurant has a few tables covered with pop up tents or you can sit inside. We opted for outside. Beer and wine menu and food menus brought out. I had a Peroni chill lemon. Think a more lemony squirt with liquor in it. That was a perfect drink for a hot July afternoon. Only 1 server for the patio but he was on it. We started with suppli, giant fried rice balls with a teeny tiny amount of cheese. I thought the dish needed salt it was just kind of dry and underwhelming. I had the lasagna with meat sauce. It came out hot The pasta was impressive, paper thin sheets that still had a little chew in them. The portion was massive. My daughter had the margarita pizza with sausage. She didn't care for the dish. The sausage tasted and had the texture of diced up salami, the crust was crispy in the bottom but the top was still kind of doughy. No fresh bail. It is similar to arancini, but is a Roman specialty made with tomato and mozzarella in addition to other "surprises". Can't go wrong with a deep fried rice ball to start. This was our first Italian meal in Italy (we had dinner our first night at an Indian restaurant). We had spent our first full morning in Rome touring the Colosseum and the Forum. We wrapped up at or just after noon (on a Monday). We checked some nearby places and set out on foot to look for lunch. This place was located about 2 blocks from the exit from the Forum (the one on Via dei Fori Imperiali). The entrance was actually via a small side street. We were offered the option of sitting inside our outside. It was a relatively nice day, so we opted for outside. Their 'patio' was more like a dead-end section of a small alley from which you could see a larger street. This is not a complaint; it was clean and quiet, but the tables were set on the pavement and you were bounded by walls on 3 sides. The tables had umbrellas, but I think the area was mostly in shadow at that hour anyway. The temperature was fine. As a slight aside, a lot of the restaurants we ate at on our trip (which featured Italian food) looked somewhat the same inside. Not American franchise sameness, but more similar than I'd expect for unrelated businesses. If you opted to dine outside, there seemed to be a bit more variety in your surroundings, which was nice. Our server was busy with multiple tables, but managed to stop by before long. I think we all opted for different varieties of pizza. We got 'still water' in a bottle, as there is no free water at restaurants here. When our pizzas arrived, I was initially skeptical tht we could each eat one - they appeared larger than what I'd term a 'personal pizza'. However, there was another difference - the pizza crust was fairly thin. Hence, you were not eating that much bread versus what was expected. We actually were able to finish the pies and we didn't feel bloated. A thin pizza like this is actually a decent lunch portion. I got a 3-ingredient variant, but the restaurant was partial to arugula so there was a LOT of it. I liked it, though I did pick off a bit of arugula. I don't recall what the other 2 people ordered, but everyone thought the food was good. At one point, a street musician came up and was playing at the fringe of the dining area. No one was making requests but after he finished, he circulated to most tables and wanted the audience to contribute. I thought it was a bit more aggressive than the busking I was used to. He skipped our table and a couple others, luckily. This was the only time I observed this sort of thing. We dined inside mostly. If you are at the Forum or in the general area, this place is a good meal option. read more

I was in a group of 5. We were exhausted from walking all day and wanted to sit down. We had bought sodas and water bottles from a gelato shop nearby and were told that we couldn't drink it there. Pizzeria alle carrette was a 2 minute walk from our vacation stay in Rome. After some pouring rain, we didn't want to go too far and came across this little neighborhood gem. Short wait for a table and we were seated. Had the lasagne and a pizza with mushrooms. Both came out steaming and were very good. The lasagne was too cheesy (if that's possible) and I would have loved a little more meat sauce, but maybe that's how it's made in Italy and not loaded with meat like it is in the US. As in all restaurants in Rome, you pay for bottled water but the nice thing here was that you can get a half liter instead of a whole bottle that is sometimes not fully consumed. A cute little restaurant hidden off the main drag, which is excellent because it stopped it from being busy when we happened past around 3:00 in the afternoon an hour or so after we arrived in Rome. Walked in, ordered two pizzas and bruschetta, and had all three items within about 10 minutes. Such speedy service! The bruschetta wasn't my favorite but I think I'm just used to American bruschetta with the tomatoes chopped up tiny so that's my problem, not theirs. I got a ham and artichoke pizza and loved every single bite of it. It was packed with flavor and had an excellent thin crust. We found this place our last night in Rome. We arrived shortly before opening and were seated immediately upon opening. I got the spicy salami pizza, and my wife got a sausage and pepperoni pizza. Both were the best pizzas we had in Rome. My only issue was that we sat outside, and the restaurant actually allowed the street vendors inside to try selling their wares from table to table. After getting gelato and a couple of water bottles and sodas, we decided to go to Alle Carrette for a little food to eat (we were not too hungry as we had just eaten gelato). However, the manager told our waiter we could not drink our water bottles we just bought (which is okay because we understood that we bought them from somewhere else). We had also planned on ordering some desserts after these, by the way, and we had told this to our waiter. However, the waiter came back from inside the restaurant and told us we could not stay at the restaurant unless we ordered more food. More food?? Are you kidding me?? We were already ordering two bottles of water, the three appetizers, and desserts after. I would have understood them saying this if there were a line of people waiting to be seated here, but there wasn't. There were probably two other parties outside with us with plenty of open seats outside and inside as well. I, too, would have understood had we been seated inside, but we were not. We were sitting outside in the heat with one small fan. The waiter was sweet and we don't blame him at all, but their restaurant policy is awful and very disappointing. Not sure if the food ended up being good because we left. We did not want nor could we afford a full meal for all five of us for the moment. Our Airbnb host recommended this place to us when we arrived. We decided to give it a try on our last night. I was curious to see how the Roman pizzas compared to the Chicago pizzas! The pizzas as we were told are personal pizzas. They're not tiny, but I wouldn't consider them large either. We ordered the "crazy" pizza (8€) and the margherita pizza (6€, which our server indicated was the typical Roman styled pizza). The pizzas came out quickly after we ordered them. I have to say that the "crazy" pizza came out and the sausages were still a little pink.... The margherita pizza was fine and delicious!!! We looked at both yelp & trip advisor for recommendations. Additionally, the lady at the hotel told us the best places open around 7 pm. This is a hidden gem. Easy to miss like most restaurants, but I recommend you search it out. We went right at 7, which I recommend the earlier the better as they were packed by 8 and turning people away. We sat in the back & the smell of the wood fire pizza oven is amazing to start. Our server (young sweet girl) saw us looking at beer choices. I wanted the full Italian experience so was looking at Italian beers. She recommended one to us. Then as we were looking at appetizers, she started to recommend from the area we were viewing. At that point, we decided to throw caution to the wind & allow her to select our whole meal. Best choice we could have made! She started us out with Arancini (Italian rice balls with cheese & marinara), fried zucchini & fried artichoke hearts in what looked like a light tempura batter. We squeezed a little lemon on them and they were delicious! My pizza was mushroom & sausages with a lite tomato base. Hubby had bacon & roasted tomatoes w/cheese. They were light, simple & probably the best pizza I have had. American pizza can't compare in my mind. Now I have to figure out how to do this when we get home. I am starting to figure that dessert is a staple here. We don't normally get dessert but it seems the thing. She brought us a sampler tray to share (tiramisu, biscotti, some chocolate pie(not sure what it was) & a custard with a berry jam. It was the perfect end to an amazing dinner. A really popular pizza spot in the youthful, hipster Monti neighborhood of Rome. Wine menu is not really a menu (red = 2 house options and a chianti) but the beer selection was okay- it's a pizza place, so that's not unexpected. We found this place as we were waiting for a table at another restaurant near by. We were tired and hungry after a long day of sight-seeing and we didn't want to wait another hour to eat so we explore around the block and found this place. When we walked it, we felt it was authentic as you can smell the wood burning oven and people were chatting with the pizza chief and cashier. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and very attentive throughout the entire meal. My travel partner enjoyed a calzone of sorts while I tried the mushroom and sausage pizza.
