tl;dr the cracker-thin pizza tonda lineup features a wide variety of traditional and adventurous topping combos When it comes to Roman pizza, most people's minds jump to pizza al taglio. But another, lesser-known Roman style is pizza tonda. Unlike poofy Neapolitan crusts, pizza tonda (also called scrocchiarella, meaning "crispy") utilizes an olive-oily, low-hydrated dough to achieve a crispy, cracker-thin base. Furthermore, these Roman pies tend to feature a wider variety of toppings (such as zucchini flowers and seafood) than their more traditional Neapolitan counterparts. In Rome, one of the most popular tonda pizzerias is Emma Pizzeria. Emma is located on a busy corner just a few blocks from the Campo de' Fiori. Inside, the off-white walls are minimally decorated with abstract artwork. Tiny dark-wood tables are pressed closely to upholstered chairs and half-booths, and the bustle around the open pizza oven dominates a background of light instrumental music. Even on a weeknight, don't be surprised to find all of the reservations scooped up. My mother and I arrived for a late dinner, and we were fortunately seated immediately. The servers were fluent in English, and our waiter quickly directed us toward some exciting dinner options. We began our meal with the made-in-house Suppli, a cross between an arancini and a mozzarella stick. The thick, breaded cylinder of tomato-sauced risotto was stuffed with gooey cheese and fried extra crispy. The pizzas were even better. Across both pies, the pizza was uncut, and the ultra-thin crust sported a leopard-spotted bottom. Furthermore, the cornicone was uniquely flavorful on its own. Our favorite pie was the Chorizo, topped with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and rich salami. The accompanying Fiori di Zucca was no slouch, either, although the generous portion of mozzarella and spinach-esque zucchini flower weighed down the paper-thin crust. Service was efficient -- our server quickly presented our check when asked; however, more relaxed diners continued to linger without any objection from the staff. A single hungry diner could reasonably down a whole pie with room to spare, but two modest appetites might do better splitting an antipasti and a single pie. At $35 across the fritti and 2 pies, Emma's prices put American individual-sized specialty pies to shame. The pizzas showcased expert technique, and I found myself preferring pizza tonda over classic Neapolitan crusts.
An absolutely exceptional experience that really lived up to the hype and my expectations. Everything we had was *chefs kiss* and the service was impeccable. I found myself literally mesmerized by our waiter's words and detailed explanation of EVERYTHING. and his descriptions actually matched up perfectly. appetizer: couldn't have done a soup/dip dish if we were sitting outside but you can fr tell the ingredients in this were all so fresh pizza: it was soo thin and crispy and as our waiter described it: "an explosion of flavor." so true. they used 4 different tomatoes for this and it all came together soo wonderfully. we gobbled this up so fast, probably one of the best pizzas I've ever had carbonara: super thick and creamy, and the bacon was appropriately crispy and flavorful to complement desserts: I LOVED ALL OF THEM. espresso tiramisu was so unique, I swear I've never had anything like it before. even my bf liked it even though he be hatin on tiramisu. and same for the crumble!!!! the biscuits and fondue were on the house which was really nice of them :) my only complaint was that there was a bit of a wait between getting the pizza and the carbonara so I would actually suggest getting everything in at once rather than saying you're going to share. lovely ambiance as well, definitely one of the nicest restaurants we've been to in rome thus far. I would also suggest making a reservation a few weeks ahead of time - even when I emailed 1.5 months ahead, there were only 2 times left available for a party of 2. So just reach out as soon as you know you wanna come here otherwise there is a bit of a wait without a res
3/5 Food - Pizza was average at best. Zucchini flowers were actually good. Don't get the Suppli (rice balls) there were really dry. Not in the pics are the meat balls. They were dry and not very tasty. 2/5 Service - Our waiter was kind of rude. He was short tempered with us and was trying to rush us. We ordered a couple of pizzas and he said, " Thats it!" Who says that? 5/5 Ambiance - Very nice and big inside. I wasn't expecting it to be that open and nice.
Excellent service, wonderfully fresh food, tented/heated outdoor seating. I would go again. We had - 4€ bread basket (3 different types of fresh baked bread - 6 pieces total) - spinach/pear salad - Candied Vegetarian pizza (caramelized onions, sun dried tomatoes, eggplant, artichoke hearts, mozzarella) - Fresh Mozzarella (eg not melted), basil, and confit tomato pizza - americanos with a side of steamed milk (and they brought us complementary sweets)
Absolutely loved this place -- not just for the pizza (which is fantastic), but for some of the best pasta dishes we had in Rome. We visited Emma multiple times because we couldn't stay away. Every dish we tried was beautifully plated, full of flavor, and made with obvious care. Cacio e Pepe - Creamy, peppery, and rich without being heavy. Perfectly al dente pasta and just the right amount of cheese. Classic Roman dish, executed to perfection. Rigatoni with Tomato & Basil - Simple, fresh, and bursting with flavor. The tomato sauce tasted homemade, and the basil added a lovely freshness. Topped with just the right sprinkle. The ambiance at Emma is sleek and modern but still warm, whether you're seated inside or on the cozy patio. Staff was friendly and professional, and the vibe is just right -- perfect for a casual dinner or a special night out. A must-visit in Rome if you're serious about pasta and want a stylish, satisfying meal.
My hubby and I had a few hours in Rome and decided to give Emma Pizzeria a try for lunch while visiting. They were busy when we arrived. Definitely a spot that seems to be popular for both tourists and locals. It was a hot, summer day and the only seating option available for a party of two was in their outside patio area. Although it was hot, the restaurant had a nice overhead covering for the outdoor seating that allowed a decent breeze to flow through the area and keep patrons cool. The food was delicious and the service was attentive. An overall positive first visit. Everything we tried was fantastic. Our order consisted of: - Margherita di Bufala pizza - Parmigiana di Melanzane - Cacio e Pepe pasta We loved everything equally. The pizza was top notch, the eggplant parmigiana had an amazingly crispy skin, and the pasta was handmade and so fresh. I would highly recommend anything we tried. After finishing our meal, it was obvious why Emma Pizzeria is such a popular and well-loved establishment. There are so many more things we're excited to try from their menu. We will definitely return the next time we're visiting Rome.
The food was quite tasty, "banger" according to my children. The service was excellent, and they gave us free chocolate! :D In addition a group of people sitting near us dressed up as pilgrims wearing turkey hats, which contributed positively to the warm and welcoming vibe. All the staff was very polite. Would return.
This place had such high ratings online, so we gave it a try! The calzone with aged proscuitto was MASSIVE (could feed 2 people for sure), and we also got the artichoke pizza. We got Christmas fries as an appetizer aka fried mixed vegetables and a suppli, which is a traditional Roman snack (fried rice ball). Everything was delish! Glad I got to try some traditional Roman items!
Loved our lunch here on our Rome holiday. The restaurant is beautiful and encompasses a nice outdoor seating area as well as a large downstairs dining room. The pizzas were so yummy and ample. Fresh locally sourced ingredients. My cousins recommended this wonderful place and we were not disappointed. Loved the wine and the ambiance of the setting.
Emma is a solid 4.5 stars. The pizzas are thin, crispy, and delicious. The cheese is freshly shredded, and the sauce is well balanced between sweet and savory. Emma has a nice craft beer list, so you can order a brew to pair with your pizza. The restaurant has plenty of seating and is deceptively large. The service was quick and friendly.
I would like to thank Emma personally for this incredible meal! I came here with a friend on a trip to Rome and it lived up to all the hype. The service was spot on, the restaurant has lots of seating, and the food is outstanding. We ordered the margherita pizza with bufalo mozzarella to share and then I had the cacio e pepe and she got the pasta carbonara. You can taste the quality in all of the dishes! I think the pizza was my favorite of the night, with high quality ingredients, a fresh taste, and a light and crispy crust. Next time you're in Rome, definitely make a reservation ahead of time for this authentic italian gem!

Would give this place solid 4.5/5 Was told by our tour guide to try this place as it was his favorite. Came here after our tour at 3 pm right before they were closing the kitchen. We got sat quickly and was told to order in 10 min!! Sat outside but wasnt given choice probably because we were so late. Unsure how the inside is but outside was nice and out of the sun. We got the marinara pizza, sampuli, spaghetti, and meatballs. Pizza was good but nothing extraordinary compared to other pizza places. Pizza is roman style (my favorite), thin crust, flaky. Price was slightly more than other places. Spaghetti was very delicious, noodles were fresh and basil was refreshing. Not heavy or greasy. Meatballs were very great, moist in the center, cooked perfectly, not overly seasoned. Overall the meal was great, and we were very happy and fortunate to have ate here. I would recommend trying here if able to. Not sure if i would wait an extended time to eat here as there are other pizzerias that are similar quality but the food is great. read more
Waited 30 mins for a table bc u need a reservation. We called and called before going but no one answered. Also couldn't book online. But we just walked around while we waited. We ordered pasta and pizza to go but wanted the carbonara to eat there. The Waiter was nice and all but didn't understand we wanted one pasta for here. So it never came. It was never ordered. Once we got that fixed and the carbonara ordered - we just got it to go. Ended up not being good. They were nice and ordered us a taxi tho. Ambiance outside was nice. But we were sat right at the front near the door, not even In the large nice room :/. They have 2 bathrooms as well with communal sinks. read more

WOWWWWW DEFINITELY a must try place Tips: make reservations. We made reservations at the opening time of 1230pm and by 1230pm we had about 15 people waiting behind us Pizza : delicious !!!!!! We had the chorizo pizza and it was great. Their pizza is very thin and the dough taste amazing. 10/10 rating Carbonara spaghetti : great !!!! Tasteful. Highly recommend. I give it a 10/10 Ravioli : my wife says it taste a little Mediterranean (don't know why she said that lol) the white sauce it brings is actually yellow. She still ate it all lol I ordered the meatballs and they were pretty good. I would say a 6/10. Overall great experience. Would def recommend this place. read more

Sadly we really didn't have a great experience at Emma. Recommended to us by two locals we ditched some of the restaurants we had saved and decided to give it a try in search of some good pizza. I would say the food was fine, nothing that really blew me away. The service was mediocre at best and where I was most disappointed. The menu here is extensive, I mean pages long of different pizzas with a variety of ingredients. Our waiter really didn't explain much of it to us, and looking through it felt like a large undertaking due to the language barrier. When we asked what was popular he really didn't have any suggestions to offer. After sorting our way through the menu without much idea of what to order, we decided on just a margarita pizza (the version of just cheese) and to add pepperoni. The waiter said no they can't add pepperoni, despite me seeing it in several other places on the menu, so we ended up with soppressata instead. Not the end of the world, just kind of a weird experience. Maybe this could be due to a cultural difference, but I just did not find the staff friendly or helpful here. I probably wouldn't make a return trip here when back in Rome. read more
Incredible thin and crunchy Roman style crust. It's one of the best pizzas in Rome. Be sure to check out the seasonal offerings for the best Emma's has to offer. While I lived my pizza the whole cherry tomatoes leaked too much water into the center of my pie turning the once lovely center into a watery mushy slop of dough. Beyond that, a damn near perfect pizza. read more
We heard a lot about this pizzeria and it definitely lived up to expectations! We saw a lot of Italians here and heard it is where many of the locals eat. We started with the sun dried tomato burrata which is a must get!! We also got the prosciutto pizza which was amazing also. Very thin crust, not too much sauce but still lots of flavor. I thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. I was hesitant at first because it had high & a decent number of reviews on yelp..which made me feel like it might just be a touristy place to go to but felt much better when my local tour guide recommended it as well! he suggested we check it out for traditional roman pizza. we went and were blown away by the taste of the margherita pizza especially. we had never had crust that thin, crispy, and light. our waiter told us they use 3 different types of flour for the dough! the tiramisu was also undoubtedly the best tiramisu I have ever had. the texture was perfect and the cream to cake ratio was also unmatched! Lovely pizzeria spot with the flower zucchini blossoms as an appetizer! Opt to sit outside. It's romantic. I'm sure inside is too, but glowing with charm, outside. Get the fried blossoms with anchovies in it because it adds that nice fish flavor to the whole cheese fried sha-bang! It compliments the whole item gloriously on one's taste buds. Their pizzas are nicely flat and thinly baked. I wanted to try Roman local pasta eats, so I ordered up the rigatoni styled Amatriciana. It was superbly delicious. Wine was served and complimented well with the whole dining experience. Date spot, surely! read more

We normally try to avoid the more touristy restaurants in Rome, so I was a little hesitant about going to Emma Pizzeria. It is a popular place with tourists as I heard a lot of English speakers surrounding us, but we pushed ahead anyway and we are glad we did. We started with a couple of appetizers, which included a simple dish of green beans with lemon, and a plate of fried Supplì al telefono and Crocchetta di Patate, which were both fried well, crispy and not too greasy. According to the menu, the potatoes in the crocchetta were from the Grotte di Castro, which thanks to google maps I just learned is in Lazio, north of Lago di Bolsena. Both of these nuggets had mozzarella, and the crocchetta also had smoked provola, which added a nice subtle flavor. For our mains, we ordered a pizza bianca with tomatoes and arugula and it was made in true Roman style. It had a thin focaccia crust, which was also a little softer than other restaurants and you can see from the picture that the tomatoes were very ripe and they were delicious. We also ordered the pasta Carbonara. I enjoy comparing these across many of the restaurants we try, and I found this version to be one of the best I've eaten. The guanciale in particular was in large meaty chunks that were both salty and peppery, and the sauce was a perfect blend of egg yolks and cheese. I was so happy with that dish that we were already starting to plan our return. No dessert this time, but others around us enjoyed a delicious array of sweet offerings. read more

5/5 for the food 3/5 for the service 5/5 ambiance I'm not familiar with Italian Service and the expectations, but I can't blame it on the language barrier because they were speaking to us in English. And smiling is a universal language. So with that said, our waiter was pretty short with us while at the other table he was attentive and friendly. In regards to the food, it was delicious. Who knew pork jowl was so tasty in pasta? My cousin's pizza weas great, the place was beautiful, and the owner was courteous and nice. read more

Who knew it would be difficult to find good Roman pizza in Rome! Emma does Roman pizza very well. The dough is the perfect consistency with just enough crunch. The tomato sauce was fresh and the pizza has just enough cheese where it's not too heavy. The food came out fast and service was friendly. The restaurant was comfortable and prices were reasonable for being so close in the city. read more

Ate here twice. Made sure it was our last dinner in Rome. There are two evening services. We ate our meal at the early one the second starts at 8:30. A reservation is really a great idea. We lucked out both times with a table as we agreed to be finished before the later service. The restaurant is CLEAN. Probably the cleanest I have ever been in either hemisphere. Cute bathroom. The food is so good. I am not a true pasta fan but here I will eat pasta. The first night I had a pizza. Excellent. The second night I had the pasta. After tasting me friends pasta the last evening I was here I was determined to eat Pasta. So fresh and perfectly cooked When I return to Rome I am headed here. read more

This pizzeria is way bigger than it looks from the outside. The dining room we sat in had AC which was nice. They have an extensive menu, especially for pizza. The pizzas, pasta, and dessert we ordered were all delicious and flavorful. The server was attentive and professional. Overall a great dinner experience! read more

This is simply put some of the best pizza i have ever had in my life. I cant think of any place i have been to (in Italy or NY) that comes close. I showed up at 2pm on a Sunday to a fairly large line. I approached the hostess who told me roughly a half hour wait but they could get me in for certain before close at 3pm. I had very high expectations after reading reviews online. I ordered the artichoke salad for starters and the margherita bufala cruda which is the hand pulled buffalo mozzarella. The artichoke salad was good but the pizza was where the magic happened. Do yourself a favor and go and try their pizza: this is a can't miss for me in Rome. read more
Went there based on recommendation from friends in Rome. Had no reservation but were seated as we came in close to opening. Extremely clean and modern feel. Good wine selection. Great pizza made with extremely fresh ingredients with variety of locally sourced cheeses. Thin crust and baked to perfection. We also had homemade Cacio Pepe pasta which was delicious, best we have had ever and doubt will find in NYC. Desert options are also amazing. We had the ricotta cheesecake and were not disappointed. I came here based on recommendations from a friend. I was there around 6:30 PM, but was told to come back at 7 PM once the restaurant opens. I got there at 7:15 PM I am literally 3/4th of the restaurant was full, we were asked if we had reservations the. - which was odd. Anyhow we got a table for strict instructions that we had to be out in 1.5hrs. Loved the zucchini flower with mozzarella and the pizzas. Great selection of wines and the tiramisu. This would have been a 5, if not for the service. I'll come back here when in Roma for the zucchini flowers. read more

Incredible. Simply the only way to describe it. Rice balls are amazing (wish I ordered more, I have been craving them ever since I walked out). Pizza is unbelievable, especially the one with all the different types of ham. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Rome, as you are unlikely to find better pizza than this! read more
