I came with very low expectations due to very low price for the night. (We came during off season - freezing winter weekend.) and they gave us a refurbished room. Big deck overlooking the lake. Cathedral ceiling on the 2nd floor. It is very cold. The room heater took several hours to warm the room. My husband thinks if we had set it about 5 degrees warmer than we really wanted, it might have warmed up more quickly. I tried to change channels on the TV and we didn't have the correct remote, so the TV channel got stuck on trying to have us choose the proper language. The guy who was on duty (at the bait / fishing place - where we checked in), came in, tried it out, couldn't get it to work, then went to another room and got us one of the older TVs. (Which was a big TV also, but not a widescreen new one.) That TV worked fine; but then we couldn't use the remote to turn it on & off. (gasp!) (First World problems.) He was a nice guy and was very helpful. The way the building is oriented, you can't see East or West directly for seeing sunrise and sunset. (Darnit!) It was so cold, I didn't want to go outside to take pix over the lake to get the sunrise & sunset pix I really wanted over the lake. Still, I got good pix of different skies over the lake. Even got some seagulls flying overhead! That was pretty cool in freezing February!

We were looking for a home to vacation at for a long weekend away, by Lake Ana in Mineral, Virginia. The house was huge with plenty of room for the 5 of us and my dog. It was beautifully decorated and full of amenities. We had an updated kitchen, large living room, and backyard deck with a fire pit. There was also a gas grill for cooking meals outdoors. The bathrooms were lovely. There were 4 bedrooms and plenty of space in the house. There was also a large driveway to accommodate several cars. I am sorry I didn't get a picture of this epic game room with a pool table, darts, assorted board games, a projection tv, and video games. My son really liked it. Lake Ana was a 15 minute drive and there were plenty of places to visit for food and drink. I was really impressed. We had a great time and I highly recommend them.

A significant indicator of the character of the innkeepers was how kind, helpful and patient they were as we struggled with international card payments. Breakfast was also very nice. Whether I wanted to try a varied multi course cooked breakfast or just have some toast and coffee they accommodated my wishes.

The really nice breakfast spread made us forget it was just continental. (Fresh berries, Greek yogurt, good bagels, hard-cooked eggs, nice granola ... ) It also made our stay doubly worth the money. Staff was responsive, pleasant, and unobtrusive. As it happened, there were no other guests our night, and so we had the entire place to ourselves and lived like kings. It was SUCH a treat. Staff even left us a couple of slices of delicious quiche, out of which we made a light supper. (It's also good we had the place to ourselves, because: we booked I think the smallest room in the place, and, though there were about 24 inches to sidle around the full size bed, there was nowhere inside our private room to put our bags.) In the evening, we took a stroll down the street and into downtown Louisa, which was very pleasant. My only note is that, personally, I feel the Boxley Place is due for--and deserves--an interior refresh by an excellent professional designer. Just because architecture is historic does not mean furniture should stay stuck in yesteryear. But truly, our stay at the Boxley Place was an unexpected highlight of our trip. The grounds are so pretty and our cottage (#2) was so warm and cozy. Everything you would have at home was here and the cottage was very spacious. I cannot say enough good things about Mark because he was so nice to talk to. I called and texted him numerous times and he was very easy to work with and never seemed to be aggravated tgat I was bothering him.
