Very comfortable and homely rooms, that are a reasonably short walk from town. Inn keepers are very kind and accomodating people especially to a nervous, anxious traveller like myself. A significant indicator of the character of the innkeepers was how kind, helpful and patient they were as we struggled with international card payments. Breakfast was also very nice. Whether I wanted to try a varied multi course cooked breakfast or just have some toast and coffee they accommodated my wishes. read more

We just returned from a very nice stay at the Inn on Poplar Hill. We were there for a wedding literally across the street. Marty and Victoria are great hosts and the breakfasts were very nice. Yes, the home is definitely aging, but it is an 1891 home. We would definitely visit again. Special shout out to Marty for all the extra effort. read more

I want to start by saying the owners are very nice people who make great food and will go out of their way to be accommodating. They also have some great wine tasting passes. But... You can tell that this place is in decline. We found a stink bug in our bed the first night. It didn't freak me out but definitely not something You want to see. There was a hair found in my breakfast both days as well as one in my wife's fruit the first day. The trails around the property are mowed but not trimmed back where a normal size man can walk comfortably without ducking constantly. There are other small things like lights out and a funny smell in the media room. In general I feel like this place was amazing at one time and the level of care has just declined. Victoria and Marty are wonderful people, and our stay here didn't ruin our trip, but I don't think we would stay here again. read more

We had a lovely time here thanks to our attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable hosts. Marty and Victoria made us feel extremely welcome. They also paid attention to details, such as who needs extra coffee and who doesn't. The food was excellent both mornings, with generous portions and vegetarian options (a bonus for us). They offered coffee service to the room each morning before breakfast so that we could sip our coffee in bed and become human before coming down to breakfast. The room was comfortable and tastefully decorated. Marty filled us in one local wineries and made excellent suggestions for trying new places. One note: There's not a TV anywhere in sight, which we found lovely. Others might mind. read more

Stellar service and a wonderful room to boot! The boyfriend and I found we had a few days in the middle of the week off and decided to go to wine country VA. We found the Inn on Poplar Hill online and booked our stay. Marty was waiting for us when we arrived with great suggestions on where to eat, go and play. We were the only ones in the house and were awarded the best room with a hot tub in the middle. When we weren't at the wineries, we were in the hot tub! It was delicious. Victoria made us the most delicious omelets in the morning and Marty gave us certificates for free wine tastings at some of the local wineries. The rooms are luxurious; we had three rooms and there was a sit-in bath tub in each room, which was needed after our 5 hour mountain hike. The owners were extremely knowledgable about wineries within 50 miles, and gave us 1/2 off coupons for tastings at the wineries we chose. They also helped us find great restaurants. The inn is within walking distance of a cute town, which includes the James Madison museum. And we had a GREAT breakfast. read more

Other than the very nice couple who own and manage this B& B, there is not much else to say positive about this except it is well located for the nearby Woodberry Forest events. It is simply beyond dated and needs a number of improvements, some very simple such as a good cleaning (low level mildew smell eventually wore me down) and replacing light bulbs (our flush ceiling light fixture was minus a covering glass globe so 3 bare bulbs were seen, one not working). The old time claw foot tub/shower may have preceded my grandmother's time (she died 50 years ago) and was beyond awkward in getting over its high sides and balancing oneself on the concave bottom. If it were inexpensive, I might be more forgiving, but it is not. read more

My partner and I stayed at the Inn on Poplar Hill for four nights in the Blue Willow Room. Both she and I fell hopelessly in love with the lovely small town nearby, and Marty and Victoria's drop-dead gorgeous home. Our hosts, Marty and Victoria, were very accommodating. For example, I wrote a small note that my partner is a vegan on the online booking. And when we first showed up, there was a giant jar of vegan chocolate chip cookies waiting for us fresh from the oven. Not only that, Victoria offered a smorgasbord of varied vegan breakfast items. The property is outright tremendous and very private. The walking trails, swings, and ponds verily occupied a majority of our time in Orange, VA in addition to the wineries close by. The fresh country air was invigorating and inspired both my partner and I to try out yoga outside. We were genuinely sad to have had to leave the Bed and Breakfast; I cannot express in words how wonderful this experience was. read more

What a wonderful place. We had an impromptu getaway weekend and booked a room last minute. They had a cancellation and we were just lucky enough to fill the spot! We love Orange, VA. It's our "runaway place" when we've had enough of the busy DC area. The room was huge. We stayed in the Library. The bed is very comfortable and the hospitality is incredible. Marty and Victoria made us feel so welcome. The Inn is walking distance from downtown Orange so we walked to supper. Breakfast we fresh and delicious. You won't go hungry here! Our favorite part was the walking paths on the large property. There is a fishing pond too...we didn't catch anything but that's not really why you fish now is it?!? And they are DOG FRIENDLY! My husband and I had a wonderful two-day stay in the Black Walnut Room at th Inn on Poplar Hill. Marty and Victoria were friendly and incredibly helpful in advising us on local restaurants, wineries, and attractions. Marty even got us discounts/free tastings at several wineries. Our room was one of two dog-friendly options, and our dog had a great time as well! There was a bowl of water waiting for her in the room, and 28 acres on which to frolic. We all enjoyed the beautiful grounds and hiking trails, even in February. We would love to come back sometime in warmer weather to get even more out of the outdoor experience. We had three meals at the Inn on Poplar Hill-- two breakfasts and one special dinner by the fire (a wintertime promotion). Every single thing we were served was delicious! Victoria was happy to adapt meals for a party of one vegetarian and one raging carnivore, and we had more than enough food at every meal. Of particular note: blueberry scones, lemon souffle, stuffed French toast, strawberry waffles, an egg-and-potato frittata, roasted corn soup, stuffed mushrooms, and an amazing chocolate cake. We also enjoyed the dog-friendly game room, and had a good time playing pool and watching free Netflix, while eating the extra chocolate cake that Victoria left out for us. Marty was very nice and knowledgeable about the wineries in the area. Unfortunately I cannot give my experience more than a one star. We stayed 3 nights. When we walked in there was a bad smell. We bought some Fabreze but it didn't seem to help. The house had stink bugs everywhere. The heat was turned off at night which made it freezing in our room. Our beds were made each morning and bath towels replaced but not vacuumed or dusted. The house needs a good cleaning from top to bottom. The outside paths need to be cleared. I would not recommend this place to anyone. This place is in massive decline and needs a full time housekeeper and groundskeeper. Don't waste your money. read more

This Inn is the perfect place to stay for a weekend getaway! It is located in the adorable town of Orange and is surrounded by VA wine country. Marty and his wife were the sweetest, most gracious hosts who went out of their way to help my boyfriend and I plan our weekend. Marty made us reservations at a delicious local restaurant and gave us recommendations for activities to do during the day. On Saturday, Marty drove us around to multiple different vineyards for wine tastings so we didn't have to worry about scheduling a shuttle service, it was so convenient! It was like our own private wine tour! There were always fresh brownies in the entry area and the breakfast was so delicious. I highly recommend staying here for a cozy weekend away! read more

My husband & I were very disappointed with the level of service we received and the lack of understanding of their business from the Inn on Poplar Hill. Due to employment issues with this economy, my husband and I are living 4 hours apart from each other. We thought for our 10 year wedding anniversary that we would go somewhere special and meet in between. We had $300 in Bed & Breakfast Gift Certificates so we thought we should meet halfway in Orange, stay at a B&B & spend a romantic weekend wine hopping. Now we are aware that these certificates have some criteria to them. It specifically says that we MUST go ONLINE at Bed & Breakfast website to use them. The Inn on Poplar Hill does have a website connection with B&B.com and it does say on there that they do take gift certificates them, however, there is not "Book it Now" button link to use the gift certificate on the site. I emailed the Inn on Poplar Hill from the B&B website & Victoria answered saying, 'We do accept gift certificates from Bed and Breakfast.com. We just don't use their on line booking link. you can make reservations online at our website or by calling.' So I called. I mentioned that these gift certificates say they are online only and she said it is ok, that they take the gift certificates. I felt concerned that she did not understand me fully and called again. This time Marty answered the phone. I explained that these certificates say they are online booking only, that it is $300 and I am worried you won't take them. He assured me that they do this ALL the time. He explained the process that he goes online, types in the GC# and then the money goes to their account. OK then. Well, I talk to my husband and there still is a fear in our stomach that they won't take them when we get there. So, this time my husband calls (I didn't want to annoy again) and READS the entire terms & conditions to Marty and we are again assured that there is NO PROBLEM. Fantastic! We book! We arrive & hand them the gift certificates and pay the balance with our credit card. We sleep and we wake up and have a great breakfast. After finishing breakfast, Marty comes to the table to tell us that WHOOPS! We do not accept these gift certificates and we will need to pay it all off with another form of payment. WHAT? My husband and I step outside to discuss what just happened. This is now NOT in our budget! Well, we have to go! When we went back to them to tell them we were leaving, we spoke with Victoria. We told her that this place was NOT our first choice, if we were to pay in FULL we would have gone somewhere else. She said she was UNAWARE that there were different types of gift certificates. My husband told her that as a business owner working with a third party to promote your B&B, you should be AWARE. Especially after us calling 3 times to make sure! Now the rest of the weekend is ruined because we have to drive separately to all the wineries and then we ended up at my husband's home 2 hours away which defeated the purpose of the weekend. So, are we partially to blame? Yes, of course. But we were assured that this would be no problem and they would accept the gift certificates. Not once did we check, but via email and THREE phone calls and even reading the entire terms and conditions to them. We felt safe because they assured us! Now throwing salt on our wounds, they still needed to collect a remaining balance from us that the gift certificates would have covered for the one night. The least they could have done for the mistake of not knowing all about who they are partnering their business with is to have not collected the balance of $63 remaining after handing my cards back to me. They could have said, "Sorry for the mistake, we will not collect the remaining balance of $63. We are sorry you cannot stay the entire weekend with us, we would have loved having you here longer." THAT would have been a better service. It was very inconsiderate. I was in tears. So Marty & Victoria, please educate yourselves on everything about your business and your third party partners and please actually listen to the questions and concerns that a future vacationer has. You should also know that if you love your job, it should not be just all about the money. read more

My wife and I wanted a quick get-away, so we chose to go to a Bed and Breakfast. After some research by my wife, we decided on The Inn on Poplar Hill. Marty and Victoria couldn't have been any nicer and the service they provided was awesome. Marty made some great recommendations and also made reservations for us at a local restaurant. Our room was the Blue Willow Room. It was so cool!! The house was built in 1891, so you might image it has a rustic feel to it. The Tourville's have done a great job in putting together a nice B&B. There is also a game room to relax in if you don't feel like venturing out. The property is 28 acres with hiking trails and hammocks out in the woods for those who really want peace and quiet. We had a great time and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a nice break. Marty and Victoria will take great care of you. Oh, bring a hearty appetite to breakfast. I must begin the review by saying that prior to arriving the owners were very helpful in choosing the right room for us and making suggestions on wineries and restaurants upon arrival we were shown to our room by Marty-a very nice and helpful person-the room is very dated it was quite cold and there does not seem to be any heat other than the small space heater in the bathroom and a "fireplace"that blew a little warm air - no f"flames" as apparently the light bulb is blown out and they have not replaced-we did not see any vents so I assume there is no air conditioning either -the ground level bathroom had only sheer see thru curtains over a expansive window to the outside-there were also no apparent smoke detectors--We had a lovely dinner in Gordonsville but decided to drive home when the in-room temperature reached only 63 degrees As we did not stay for breakfast I cannot comment on the food In general this is a very old property both in structure and furnishings and the pictures on the web site definitely do not accurately represent the property read more

This was our first stay at a B&B and we will be back. Marty and Victoria are absolutely wonderful hosts that made us feel welcome the moment we walked through the door and sad when we had to say good-bye. The Inn had all the quaintness and charm we had hoped to find. We enjoyed the walking trail on-site and it served as a great launching point for the Montpelier grounds. We attended the wine festival on 03 May and opted for the picnic lunch the Inn offered. The picnic was so plentiful we could not finish it, but so tasty, we made every effort to get one more bite. The breakfast both days was also well beyond expectations. My wife and I cannot say enough good things about the Inn, the Innkeepers, or our stay; please join them and experience the wonders of Inn on Poplar Hill first hand, you will not be disappointed. read more

Home away from Home! My boyfriend and I were in town for a friends wedding and needed to find a pet friendly place to stay because we had to bring our puppy with us. The Inn on Poplar Hill welcomed us and our puppy with open arms. Upon our arrival, Marty and Victoria showed us to our room, gave us a tour of their extensive grounds and ALSO offered to let our puppy out while we were at the wedding so we would not have to come back early!! We were so relaxed to know she was in good hands! When we returned from the wedding, we took a stroll under their lit tree and took a swing in their romantic swing set.
