After two years, Empanada City finally opens! Today (May 5th) was opening day and it was BUSY when I walked in this afternoon. The interior is done in the industrial chic look that's so popular these days. They really worked hard on making this place look good. I look forward to when they have seats outside. The empanadas are little fried pockets of happiness. I got the ground beef empanada, which was lovingly filled with meat. The spice sauce has pleasant mild heat and isn't too spicy. I love heat, so I wouldn't have complained if there were more heat. The only snafu was that I ordered a ground beef and apple pie empanada, but I received two ground beef ones. This is the usual opening day snafus, so I expect this will be resolved in the future. Looking forward to trying the apple pie soon. read more

Obsessed with rustic space and flavorful empanadas! I was truly impressed with the Cuban empanada (being Cuban myself) and the fact that is was bursting with FLAVOR! Many places lack flavor when incorporating the meat in their empanadas. I was extremely impressed with all the ones I tried (signature chicken, Cuban, platano and cheese OMGG, and americano) DELISH! I'm happy this place has opened up in the neighborhood, because it provides an excellent spot for all sorts of people--even kids looking for a $2 snack ($2!!) Most empanadas are $2, some of the fancier ones are $3, which means you can get away with a whole lunch for as little as $4?? maybe $9 if you're really hungry. That's a good deal as far as i'm concerned. I've only had maybe 3 or 4 varieties? Which is mostly because I can't get past ordering the SHRIMP empanada. Man. It's amazing and I could easily eat 5 of them in a row they're so good :| It's sauteed shrimp in a very light red sauce with onions and peppers :9 I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. I had three empanadas here: Chicken (Signature, $3): Chicken was quite dry Shrimp (Signature, $3): One of my favorites, this empanada was very tasty because of the red sauce within Spinach and Ricotta, $2: My favorite of the three, this one was very flavorful and satisfying. Would recommend this one the most even though the signature empanadas tend to have more special fillings. The decor here is cute with indoor and outdoor seating. The empandas are all thrown into one bag so it's a guessing game if you order different flavors. Customer service here is lacking. Waited over 15 minutes for three empanadas while others who ordered after me received their orders first. Had at least three staff members just standing in the front area doing nothing, asked if they could check if my order was ready yet, turns out it was just sitting in the back. The staff just handed it to me, no apology or anything. When I opened the bag the oil from the empanada had already seeped through, most likely from sitting in the bag too long. Biting into that buttery, flaky crust of that ROPA VIEJA EMPANADA made me giddy and hop around. Remember that scene in Ratatouille with the food critic? It brought me that back. The empanadas here are good but I definitely had better. They are a bit expensive in my opinion, The prices for empanadas range froom $2.50 to $3.50 each. They do not give dipping sauce with the empanadas, they charge 25 cents for each dipping sauce. I never been to a place that charged for that and the amt given is so small. This is really frustrating because the Ropa Vieja, Pastelon, and (surprisingly) American empanadas are delicious. They are something you will find yourself craving. But there's a big problem with their delivery system, and they need to take responsibility for it. I have ordered from here about five times, trying several different empanadas. They are hit-or-miss. While there are a few flavors that are excellent, the beef empanada has no flavor, the broccoli-mozzarella is bizarre, and the chicken is dry. More importantly, though, the delivery situation (through Seamless/GrubHub) is a disaster, and it doesn't appear to be just Seamless/GrubHub. On a prior occasion about two months ago, they took over an hour to get here (more than 30 minutes outside the delivery window), and they are literally two blocks away from my house. When I called about it, they said they had no control over the driver or way to contact him, sorry. Tonight (9/13/19), I ordered $34's worth of empanadas, sauces, and flan. About 30 minutes later, a delivery guy (Mohammad, from GrubHub) shows up, thrusts a bag at my boyfriend, and says, "The restaurant sent the wrong order. You have to take this one and call them to get the right food." My boyfriend asks why he can't go get the right food or call the restaurant for us, since he knew it was wrong in the first place. My boyfriend also says we don't want some other person's food. Mohammad pushes the bag back into my boyfriend's hands, says, "You call the restaurant, and they will send the right food," and leaves. (For the record, "Jon K." is the one who really ordered the beef and the broccoli-mozzarella empanadas. I can only hope he hadn't had them before and didn't know they were gross because otherwise he has pretty terrible taste in food.) So we call the restaurant. Unfortunately I didn't get the name of the woman I spoke to. She said there was nothing she could do. She said they couldn't send out our actual order because they don't have another driver. She said they couldn't call Mohammad to come back because "that's not how it works." She left the phone for a bit and came back and said she spoke to "the girl" (didn't get a name) who gave the order to the driver, and that girl said she gave TWO orders to the driver, one for me and one for "Jon K." Therefore, the driver must have messed up, so it's really not their fault. She said I had to call Seamless myself, get them to reorder the food for me, then they will get sent a new driver, and THEN we can get our real order. Otherwise, Seamless could give us a refund. I told her, you know, this isn't an efficient or even logical way to run things and that it didn't make sense that THEY didn't call Seamless/GrubHub to get a new driver ASAP. So I called Mohammad since, you know, Seamless gives me the driver's number. I have a hard time believing the restaurant couldn't get ahold of the driver if the system gave his cell phone number to ME, the customer. And he picked up the phone. Now, Mohammad said that the woman at Empanada City was lying, that he was only ever given one order and that he could send me a screenshot showing he only ever got one order from them. I questioned him on this, but he was persistent. When I went back to Seamless to try to leave a review for the experience there, I found two things: reviews for the restaurant appear to have "broken" or been disabled, and the restaurant was already closed. It does make me wonder: was it that they couldn't get ahold of Mohammad and that's not the way the agreement works...or was it that they were closing and didn't want to bother with getting me the right order? Someone, or more than one someone, involved either lied or made a mistake. In any event, they handled it terribly, and it left a terrible taste in my mouth, and it's not just the broccoli-mozzarella empanada. I want to be clear: I'm not trying to get anyone fired. The problem here lies with the restaurant's management and Seamless/GrubHub. Take responsibility for the process and your part in it. Negotiate a better system, or be honest about the current system and/or when you make a mistake within it. And add some seasoning to your beef empanadas. Also that. read more
