I wouldn't classify myself as sandwich-lover, but these tortas are undoubtedly one of my favorite NYC discoveries since moving here two+ years ago. Their torta bread is all pressed, leaving grill marks and making for a nice crispy bite each time. I ordered the Torta Chorizo and Huevo Torta and didn't want it to end. The flavors and ingredients work together so well, especially the fresh cheese. It's such a soft yet satisfyingly salty element in the whole mix. I also tried the hefty Mexicana Torta. Great recommendation for meat-fanatics. It's a packed mouthful with exciting textures and savory goodness. I actually really enjoyed this one even after I let it sit out a couple of hours. The textures seemingly got even more distinguished. Lastly, the empanadas are amazing as well. Their fillings are completely full--no room for disappointment. Don Pepe is a neighborhood institution dishing out some of the best smoothies, milkshakes and juices on the block. The colorful signage will catch your eye as you huff and puff your way up 5th ave on this humble corner of Sunset Park. Inside the counter is full of a large picture menu, it's like walking in to a juice heaven. There are so many choices it would take a lifetime to try them all. Everything from acai bowls, to all sorts of fruit mixes are available. I recently tried their chocolate explosion smoothie it was fantastic and delicious. Service is always fast and efficient and they even have a small seating area inside. If a sandwich stuffed with a whole deep fried pepper, itself stuffed with cheese, seemed like a fever dream from that trip, I confirmed its reality at Don Pepe, whose interior decoration also feels like something not of this world. The sandwich was surprisingly not overwhelmingly heavy, with a flavorful layer of avocado, tomato, fresh white cheese, and of course the aforementioned chile. It went down nicely with the tropical smoothie, which tasted most prominently of mango and guayabana - one of an overwhelming number of beverage options lining the menu on the walls. IN-SANE! These tortas (Spanish for sandwiches) have so much going on that you will need a GPS to find out where you just started. First off, the tortas are filled with plenty of meat and taste GREAT. There is so much going on with them that it would change from one sentence to the next. The bread is made perfectly, soft and pillowy with just enough crisp to avoid it from getting soggy from all what is inside. Second, the menu is extensive. VERY extensive. Hundreds of smoothies, juices, tortas, tacos, and burritos to pick from. This is a restaurant that you could plop in Los Angeles, or even in Manassas, VA (just ask), and it would work out fine. There is a little bit of seating so take advantage of it if you plan on eating this inside. I'm not gonna lie the amount of choices here is a bit overwhelming but it's well worth it. There is every kind of smoothie/juice imaginable available here. And the portions are very good, I barely finished my medium. The smoothies are the perfect consistency, they don't fill it with ice to water it down or anything. Just the fruits, veggies, and juices listed on the menu. Nothing more nothing less. We got 2 smoothies and 2 sandwiches which came up to about $55 which seemed like a lot at first but like I mentioned the portion sizes are good here. Every thing was very filling. We got tortas #30 & #16. Definitely plan to come back and try more. There's a couple tables in the back to eat onsite but if the weather is good, sunset park is a 5 min walk away as well. Had this legendary spot on my list to visit for ages and finally made it down this was for tortas and smoothies (and some post-lunch bowling nearby of course) and was not disappointed. It's fresh juice and smoothies in the front, tortas in the back. Come as hungry as you can imagine being and prepare to leave well sated to the point that further meals in the next day or two will seem completely optional, as these suckers are huge! Everything was quite delicious. We ordered a couple of juices and tortas to share--for the juices we picked a couple that I think went well with the tortas--a Carrot Gold and a Golden & Delicious--felt healthy and fresh and were quite tasty. Tortas were huge (it bears mentioning twice)--lush, packed with ingredients and bursting with flavor. Loved the Hawaiian, which balanced spicy pork and jalapeños with pineapple and huge avocado slices. Also tried the Espanola Doble for a more breakfast-y vibe. We barely finished the delicious stuffed sandwiches. If I had a complaint, it's weird but I'd say the menus are almost too overwhelming--literally hundreds of juices and dozens of tortas to choose from, all on colorful signs above the counter and some with alluring photos...by the time we ordered I was wickedly hangry. I ordered the #24 De La Casa torta sandwich and a beef empanada. The prices were decent and the portions were large. There was a lot of filing in both the torta sandwich and the empanada. The torta was delicious and had a kick to it. The torta was grilled well and the empanada was crispy. Both items were hot and fresh. I've been eating a lot of sandwiches lately. And by lately, I mean the last 30 years or so. And I can honestly say that I've never had a sandwich like the tortas they've got here. These things are just stacks on stacks on stacks of FLAVOR. I got the Hawaiiana: carne enchilada, jamon, tocino, piña, queso fresco, quesillo (doble queso). For you gringos: spicy pork, ham, bacon, pineapple, and cheese (these are all my favorite things). My friend got the Espagnola: salchicha, jamon, tocino, huevo, queso fresco, quesillo, papas de casa. I'm not going to translate that one, because you should have learned Spanish by now. We split them, and I must tell you, both of these tortas were massively, painfully delicious. So many flavors. So much happy. Downsides: 1. You've got to wait as they stack these things. All good things take time. 2. Eat the whole thing, and you will destroy your entire day. And possibly your health. But as they say, if you haven't got a torta from Don Pepe, you haven't got anything. read more

Their workers behind the counter act like their s**t don't stink. Like we are blessed to have them serve us. I can't believe the owner of this business is not aware of how bad their service is in this place. That speaks volumes about how they don't care about their customers. My experience was so horrible yesterday. I was left in tears and shock. I have ordered many times before. This business is very pricey. So I have spent much money here. And yesterday I called to place an order. I explained to the loser with the worst customer service skills that I had surgery. I could not eat. I didn't have a problem waiting for my order. He went on to say; we are not delivering to you. If you want something, you got to pick it up yourself. Again I said, I just had two surgery back to back. I could barely walk. He hung up the phone on me and blocked my number. I called back from my daughter's phone number, and he answered. He passed it along to another guy. Now, this guy lied and said my number was not blocked. They had many calls coming through. But that was untrue because as soon as I called from a different number. They picked up right away. So, in the end, I was told we would never deliver to your address again. And we don't need your business. As a business, your food could be amazingly good. But if your customer service skills are horrible. Your food means nothing. And yesterday, the two idiots I spoke with had a significant impact. It made me create a Yelp account. So I can leave a review on this horrible, disgraceful place. Good Luck, because in my heart, these people are racist and lack morals, empathy, effective listening, problem-solving, and professionalism. I want and told all my friends, family and neighbors. I've been introduced to this place by one of my best friends who used to live in the Sunnyside neighborhood. She told me it was her go to place growing up and she still goes here as an adult. Since it was a warm day, we were in the mood to grab some smoothies. The menu of types of smoothies to choose from are endless. As soon as you enter the menu of smoothies start at the entrance and end by the cashier on both sides. I was amazed of all the choices there were to choose from. I ended up getting a smoothie with pear, pineapple, papaya and ginger. I loved how fresh tasting the drinks were. You can even see them prepare it to order behind the counter. There are three sizes, but the small was plenty for myself. I definitely will need to return to try different ones. For a small snack, we decided to share the nachos. They were quite delicious and I was impressed that the chips remained crisp despite the topping on top. For the past month I've walked down 5th Avenue, saddened to see this Sunset Park staple closed due to COVID19. Until today. Today we walked past a Don Pepe open for delivery and takeout. I write this review sipping a perfect-as-ever Pango Mango smoothie, more thankful than ever for this neighborhood gem. With a food menu that you could explore for months without exhausting (over forty tortas alone, not to mention tacos, burritos, salads...), one could be forgiven for thinking that this is review is of just a breakfast/lunch spot. That does a monstrous disservice to the juices, smoothies, shakes, and other beverages. Whether you like a sweet blend of fruits, something chocolatey, nutty, spicy, or bitter, there's not simply a drink for you, but probably a dozen options. The choices are nearly overwhelming. Most restaurants with a menu of half this many options would fail to make all but one or two particularly well. Don Pepe is consistently great, no matter what we've tried. My favorites are the aforementioned Pango Mango smoothie, a delicious blend of peaches, pineapple, mango, and citrus blended with yoghurt, and the Chili Relleno torta, a MASSIVE sandwich (seriously, the first time we ordered two sandwiches, we thought they accidentally put three in the bag) of a perfectly battered cheese-stuffed Poblano, with avocado slices, jalapeños, tomatoes, onions, refried beans, and more cheese, all on a perfectly toasted torta. ¡Viva la Don Pepe! read more

Both the juice/smoothie bar and savory food menus are *enormous*, with generous portioning to match for how reasonably priced everything is. My boyfriend and I picked up two Chile Relleno tortas the other day, with the intention of having one each, only to be very (pleasantly) surprised by how heavy the bag was and find out that their standard sandwich weighs a pound/we can split them and still have plenty of food. What took me so long? *cough* laziness *cough I was on the train heading to another destination to eat, and decided that enough is enough. Today will be the day. I've seen the pictures of the menu, and it still doesn't do it justice. I'm serious when I say it's never-ending. The smoothies section is even crazier!!! Decided on a Al Pastor Torta and a large Summer Breeze smoothie to stay. The Torta was delicious but was it worth $10 plus tax? I can't say for now, but I'm going to try another one soon to find out. The smoothie though..... Wow. Just wow. Now that was worth the price to me. Boy did I underestimate the size of that drink. It was hot to serve filed with pork fillet, ham, pineapple and cheese. Prepared inside with avocado, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos and refried beans. Be warned, it was a little spicy. If do not want any torta spicy, order it without the jalapenos. The atmosphere was really casual and to order your torta you go up to the counter in the back of the store where the guy freshly cooks it in front of you. Also, if you don't know Spanish don't be worried! The menu is huge and has a photo of what each torta exactly looks like with the ingredients listed in Spanish and in English. Also for purchase are little handcrafts and food imported from Mexico. The tortas ranged from $8-$10 and so did the very large juices.
