I just love this place and the staff. My family was delayed with meeting up with me for an hour! The staff took the best care of me, and then of my family. The food is delicious. The ambiance tonight was like a house party because there was a work party going on - so it was unusually loud. It is normally pretty quiet there. The pics tell a better story about the food than I can right now, but I will describe one: The poached fillet is a treasure chest of good stuff. It has sea bass, enoki mushrooms, wood ear mushrooms, lotus root, bok choy, etc. I did not realize this until I dipped the spoon under the fish. It is worth every penny. My family of four had a terrific experience at Emperor Garden. Given the beautiful ambience with red lanterns, one would never think one were in a suburban mall. The Chinese food was tasty and authentic, and portions were generous (huge amount of rice). The lunch specials included one egg roll and a soup. We ordered the slightly spicy homestyle tofu, which came with nicely textured tofu, soft on the inside, along with a superb egg drop soup. The other vegetarian dish, with sautéed eggplant, green peppers, and potato, was just as good. The wontons in the wonton soup were small and forgettable (only pork, no shrimp, unlike the classic Cantonese version). The two entrees overall represented Dongbei cuisine well. OUTSTANDING! My daughter told me there was an authentic Chinese restaurant in a mall. Impossible I said. I was wrong. The menu which comes on a tablet is formatted in a way that is a bit foreign but if you are able to stick with it you will find the Chinese specialties Americans are used to under American Style and Staples. My daughter and grandkids ordered from those 2 sections I ordered from Sichuan and Liaoning and made converts of the rest of the table. Dishes we ordered and devoured: Steamed as well as as fried Pork and cabbage dumplings: Plump, not doughy, delectable. The youngest got some pineapple chicken ting that she devoured. Daughter ordered Beef & Broccoli and a rice noodle dish with chicken. The broccoli was tasting, the noodles were not over cooked, the plate was cleaned by 3 at the table. Grandson ordered General Tsaos chicken. Looked good, he ate 90% of it. Thy other Grandmom and myself ordered the Eggplant with minced pork, stir fried cabbage and Mapo Tofu. INCREDIBLE. Daughter and Grandson reluctantly tried the 3 dishes and tucked into them like they'd never see food again. Lastly, I ordered the tea. A small pot with a loose mixture of high quality leaves that you can keep refilling from the carafe of hot water. The fried rice was definitely my favorite, simple, flavorful, and comforting. I also really liked the sauce that came with the duck dish. The ambiance was calm with no loud music or distractions, making it easy to enjoy the meal. Good Chinese food in a fancy mall location. Price is a bit elevated as you might expect. Apart from the typical Chinese American standbys, there are a few more interesting dishes. I tried the pork intestines lunch special and was quite satisfied. Comes with soup, hot and sour was somewhat bitter and not generous with the ingredients, and, an eggroll. Does not include tea. I was able to try the Emperor Garden with friends recently. It did have very nice ambiance. It happened to be dead as a doornail the Thursday night that we went. I'm not sure if that is typical for there for a weeknight but needless to say we had no issues getting a table. Regardless of being dead, service was extremely slow. Unfortunately the servers weren't really sure what to do. I'm not really sure how long this place has been open but some more service training would definitely not go amiss. The food was definitely good. The lo mein was the standout item out of all the items that we ordered. read more

Thought we'd check out a new Chinese spot. Albany lost Hong Kong on Wolf Rd., sadly so we need a new go to place. Not sure where to start but we were not impressed. The menu is absolutely massive and focuses on multiple regions so while they do A LOT of stuff, it probably takes knowledge or a lot a trial and error to find top items. We ordered chicken with crispy chilli. The chicken bits were course, they used a standard thick coating from a package (seemingly) and carelessly threw the crispy chilli flakes on it. The fry oil taste was unappealing as was the chilli which I normally love. It left an awful taste which was not alleviated by beer or water. Family found it generally distasteful as well. The shrimp dumplings tasted like they threw shrimp powder into them. Not good. And I am a big fan. The vegetable lo mein was ok. Decent wok hei flavor which would have been enhanced with more vegetables and some nice fresh scallion. Again, kind of carelessly prepared. The roast duck was ok. Fat was well rendered but again flavor was lacking. The pancakes were cold. The cucumbers used in the dumpling were carelessly cut with seeds hanging out making them wet and soggy, failing to impart that nice crunch. Again, not thoughtful. The wait staff was thoughtful enough to let us know a pot of tea would be $10.00. Trying to keep a straight face we opted for water and one of us had a beer. He said that was the best part of the meal. Won't be returning unless someone who knows what to order takes me there and pays! read more

a very nice Chinese restaurant located inside Crossgates Mall. it was Sunday evening, so our favorite Chinese restaurant in town (Ala Shanghai) was not open... so we drove from CP to Crossgates. The servers were dressed in nice uniforms. We got a nice greeting.. We immediately ordered Hot and Sour soup (it was a damp, chilly evening)... we also immediately ordered Peking Duck (which I called in advance and was assured by James they had it... it's not even on the menu; I asked for James and he said they could make it... and they "faked it" alright... it took some time (@ 45 minutes, but that was OK. Our waiter didn't know they could make it and had no idea what Hoisin Sauce was. We continued to review the menu to order another dish (beef with broccoli) while we were waiting for the Hot and Sour soup. I asked about the soup "numerous times". Waiter said they ran out of it and were making it for us. The first food that came out was the beef and broccoli, which as mentioned was the 3rd dish we ordered about 20 minutes after we ordered the soup and duck...but it came out first! After waiting over 30 minutes, the soup finally came out... and the soup was COLD! how is that possible if they just made it fresh for us??? We returned the inedible soup and we were told, we will take if off the bill... DUH. One reason the service was so "Inattentive" was that the staff was eating their dinner on the other side of the restaurant.... Overall, the food was OK. definitely "Nothing special". Service was poor, but polite. the prices are higher than most local Chinese restaurants in Albany area, but that was expected. We saw the prices online before we went there. If the food and service were good, it would have been fine.... a major FAIL! I hate to do a review like this. read more

They just opened and don't yet have liquor license but that did not bother us as the food was fantastic. We were three adults and ordered three meals - had leftovers to take home. Struggled to give this a three star, the food was nothing special, run of the mill Chinese food, on the expensive side as well. Ordered five different dishes to see how they were, average. The service... this is probably the worst service I've had out of any restaurant I've ever been to.! What is the point of using a tablet as a menu, to place an order, only to have the server come back at the end of the meal and ask everyone what they had to eat so they could bill you! There is a serious language barrier here, and I'm sorry but as an American if you're in this country, you should know how to speak English! At least some!!! The restaurant was nice, used to be world of beer, didn't change the inside too much, it's a bit cold, sitting on the one end next to the main entrance of the mall, they should've blocked that side off, we kept getting a cold breeze every time somebody came in and out of the mall. (Beer costs between $6 and $8 at Emperor Garden). -- We complained to the manager via the server because the mgr doesn't speak English). They removed the $10, but I am nevertheless alerting potential customers to this issue because some may not be as assertive as we are and pay this outrageous amount. Buyer beware! read more

visited with my family early on a wednesday evening. we were greeted right away, as we were the only customers at the time. nice ambiance for a mall setting, and tablets for menus. didn't see or hear of any drink/food specials. waiter must've been bored because he was constantly hovering, not giving us time to absorb the menu. we ordered dumplings and were told they would take 15 minutes, ok. ordered spring rolls, which came as 4 slices the size of a pinky with little stuffing. daughter ordered onion rings, biggest order of onion rings i have ever seen, however, they were cheap frozen onion rings with no "onion" inside. our meals came out one by one, so we weren't able to enjoy the meals as a family. my rice noodles were so spicy i couldn't eat them, we had requested the general tso's spicy so they got that mixed up. no option to get fried rice with general tso's, you have to pay a full meal price for the upgrade. beers were a decent price. overall, definitely not worth $140 with tip. save yourself the money and go to China Max in the food court. read more

Emporor Garden is a new, restaurant quality, Chinese restaurant at Crossgates mall. Key location, and they dress the part, literally. Friendly servers dressed in authentic garb adds an authentic and more than pleasant touch to the experience. Beware, this is family style. So if you stroll in like I did, order some apps(dumplings are a must) and some hot tea. I thoroughly enjoyed everything from the decor, service and of course the food.
