We started with the variety from the Appetizer Sampler which was our easy choice. We struggled to decide on the main course choice due to all the interesting choices. We settled on the Bird's Nest because of the proteins included and the change of pace to have pan-fried Canton noodles. Overall it was a good meal. I always love eating at Encore. It's one of those restaurants where eating in person makes the food taste better. The entire vibe of the restaurant is immaculate and extremely cozy. We stopped in last Monday for a bite to eat. We were waited on by Brian, who was fantastic. Great conversation and he didn't let our glasses get empty. We started with the Szechwan Wontons which were flavorful and plentiful. For dinner I ordered the szechwan green beans which are my favorite and my husband got shrimp fried rice and egg rolls. The food was delicious as it always is every time we have eaten here. We sat at the bar and it was not to noisy, everyone was enjoying the ambiance. This is my favorite restaurant in Lawrence, but recently I had a very poor experience there and I want to make everyone aware of what happened so you can make sure it doesn't happen to you. After a very delicious meal, I asked for the check and instead the paystation was brought to me without the check. The total was $90.00, and asking for a $20 dollar tip on the screen. I almost tapped, and then I thought about it and after some internal calculations realized my order shouldn't have been over $50. I asked to see the receipt, and then she was like "there must have been some kind of mistake, and left the table to get the actual check. When she came back, my bill was $50. I asked her how this happened. Her explanation was that it was "busy" and "the previous table paid in cash so the table was accidentally left open." When she brought this paystation however, this time she brought the check so she could show me that everything was there. Interesting how she didn't bring it the first time when the bill was much higher. Unsatisfied with her explanation, I went to the bar and asked to speak to the manager and told him what had just transpired. He apologized and asked if I had paid the correct amount in the end. I told him I had, but at that time no offer of compensation was offered for this egregious mistake. At that point we left the restaurant. I understand "mistakes" happen, but this did not seem like a mistake. By her mannerisms and underhanded actions, this seemed like an intentional action by a slimy waitress in an attempt to obtain a bigger tip, and I want to make everyone aware of that! Lastly, while I would have been able to absorb the additional costs without it adversely effecting me, I know that that is not the case with all people or families, and I want to make sure that everyone is double checking their receipts before paying, because there is at least one waitress out there, degrading the consumer trust that encore has spent years building and cultivating. Look out for yourselves and each other. TLDR: waitress tried to scam me into paying double, management didn't seem very concerned. No compensation was proffered to the aggrieved party. Reviewers are urged to carefully check their bills at the end of their meal to keep themselves safe. I will update this if anything changes. read more

We LOVE Encore! Even our picky kids will eat the Sesame Chicken with us. Great fried rice. I love to get the crab Rangoon as an appetizer and the Gyoza is my favorite! I'm always surprised we are able to be seated quickly even when they are busy. To go orders are always ready fast and are delicious at home (but nothing beats eating there fresh!). A delicious Asian restaurant on Mass street! I can't believe it took me this long to try Encore. I have heard nothing but great things from friends, so I finally went there to try it a few weeks back. I ordered the chow mein with beef which was amazing! My mom order the Thai Mango Chicken which was very flavorful. In addition, we also shared a jug of Strawberry Basil Soju that was so good! That was my first time having a special-made soju like that and I definitely wanted to order a second. The jug was about 2 healthy sized servings each. Soju did take a long time to come out unfortunately. Same time as our food even though we ordered it early. Plenty of low tables and booths as well as bar seating. Probably one of the best restaurant in Lawrence, KS. Great for big group because they have a couple of private rooms in the back. Clean bathrooms. One word of warning though, The mirror connecting the male and female bathrooms is see-through but it's only at the sink. Food here is excellent. Beef teriyaki in bamboo is delicious and provide a unique dining experience. Fried rice in there is moist and tasteful. Mango chicken is really good as well. The mango taste varies depending on the season though. When I had it, it was a little sour. But overall, the think it complements well with the chicken and sweet chili source. The food was packaged nicely, place is cute and would even venture to come again to stay and eat. Have a 10 minute drive home and food was intact and even still hot! I ordered the sesame chicken which had a wonderful flavor. Almost Half the container was broccoli which was different. Could have done without that and more of the main dish. But regardless I very much enjoyed the chicken. The crab Rangoons were filled generously and fried to perfection. The egg drop soup was one of our favorites that we have had from a Chinese food place. We ordered the large one and it was enough for 3 big bowls or 4 small bowls of soup. I grew up a rabid Mizzou fan. The idea of going to Lawrence for any reason was akin to treason. However, while driving a U-Haul 900 miles to Denver, ya get hungry. Around 7pm, my companions noted that Salina was a long way off, and suggested Encore. I hope my ancestors can forgive me. This place impressed on every level. If we were hitchhikers, the thumbs we put up for Encore would be visible for miles in the Kansas flatlands. On a busy Saturday night, we waited 15 minutes, but were seated promptly after our table was cleaned off. Our server was friendly and handled questions with ease. Prices were very low compared to Denver. Based on the food, you'd never know it's a college kids' hangout. As soon as we sat down, I was stoked to order Vietnamese coffee with chicory-more on that later. Each of the following was well-prepared with quality ingredients: Egg rolls; fried calamari; pineapple fried rice; bird's nest; general tso's chicken; "pad" thai. Sounds perfect, right? Almost. Be warned (I was not). The Vietnamese coffee takes forever to make. Other beverages came, followed by appetizers. When entrees arrived, I asked about the coffee. It hadn't been forgotten. It just takes that long. Is it worth the wait? Yes. Just be prepared to have it for dessert. Final word: Even if you don't need to go, check out the bathrooms. I guarantee a double take when you go to the sink to wash up. read more
