I like this small buffet. They have plenty of food options and they are great about keeping the food servers well stocked. It's a smallish space but easy to access. Food: delicious and fresh. Service: excellent. Ambiance: fine, probably. I was too busy stuffing my face with some kind of crunchy fried shrimp in sweet creamy coconut sauce to pay attention. Prices are quite reasonable. Best quality buffet in town. The selection is more modest than some, but they have all the classics, perfectly prepared, always consistently good no matter what day you go. Except Mondays. The restaurant is closed on Mondays, so if you go, you have to fight the raccoons. Just wait and come back Tuesday. You don't want to fight the raccoons. read more

This is a great little buffet on 9th Street, where red pepper used to be. The food was delicious, fresh and had many choices. Starting with the basics and on; fried rice, lo mein, rice noodles, steamed dumplings, stir fried green beans, soups, different meat and vegetables, plenty to choose from. The service was a 6 out of 5, they were clearing the table and filling drinks.... and very friendly. They offer deserts and individual ice cream as well. We've been in a couple of times and everything was delicious for each visit. It was a little more crowded the second time but we could still carry on a conversation. This restaurant is in the prior location of Red Pepper, which has moved. SOHAO Buffet is strictly a buffet, with no full-service kitchen service. But the service nevertheless is surprisingly good for a buffet restaurant. There are many servers constantly walking around the restaurant. As soon as I arrived, I was served a drink. The choice was Pepsi products, hot tea, cold sweetened tea, or cold unsweetened tea. As soon as I finished a glass, the server was back with another glass. As soon as I finished a plate of food I had selected from the buffet, a server arrived to clear away the empty plate, so I could take a new plate from the buffet tables. As soon as I had finished my meal, I was brought the check, and as soon as I had placed my credit card on the check, it was taken to the register and then returned for me to sign. The food on the buffet tables is rapidly replaced as needed. The price is reasonable for all you can eat from the buffet, and there are discounts for students and seniors. The food is very fresh. The choices are mostly rather traditional Americanized Chinese. If you are looking for innovative authentic Chinese foods from various regions of China, you might be disappointed. I particularly liked the Seafood Pie and the Bao. There are many seafood and vegetarian choices, which work very well for me as a pescatarian. Frankly I was initially hesitant to try this restaurant with only buffet service, but I was pleasantly surprised when I did. read more

I've been to this buffet about five times since I started to come to a doctor in Lawrence. The first time, right after my hip was replaced. I could not have asked for a kinder staff. They were very considerate and helpful. The buffet itself is excellent. Yes, it's standardized American-Chinese but care has been taken not only in the presentation but in the spicing of each dish. The flaw in this rating system is that I cannot give this restaurant the zero stars it deserves. I would lead off my saying that I generally love Chinese buffets. There wasn't a single item on this buffet worth eating. AWFUL! An entire canister of Altoids would be necessary to combat the lingering disgusting coat of yuck polluting my mouth. By way of example, I would've thought the orange chicken was actually an orange peel, except an orange peel wouldn't be that hard. The items were mismarked on the buffet. I will not attack the service (which didn't even bring the bill to the table) because they probably did not expect my party to leave that quickly. There were no second plates, only first plates with considerable leftovers. This was the worst meal I've had in a very long time. The best thing on the menu was the white rice. Not even the shameful excuse of a chef would botch that flavorless item. No flavor is better than yuck. It was easy to park and I trust that the parking will get easier in the future as people will stop going to this dump. Will I go back to So-hey-o? No-way-oh! read more
