So, even though it's a bit off the beaten path, Calico Creations has become a place I can rely on to grab the perfect fabric for my latest project. So I try to stop there when I'm passing near (or through) MV. They carry all of the major designers and latest lines. From modern prints by Tula Pink and Kaffe Fassett to more traditional calicos and Civil War style fabrics, you will find it here. Not to mention they have an extensive collection of solids and blender fabrics, baby fabrics, pattern books and even some pre-cuts (not many, but I'll take it). Not in a sewing mood? Find inspo from their ever-rotating samples adorning their windows and walls. On a budget? They have an impressive (and huge) sale area in the back, where fabric is $10/yard (or lower). My only criticism is their small space. They could easily fill a shop twice the size, and as a result many MANY of their bolts are sitting on the floor. They try to keep it organized, and do a pretty good job, but it bears mentioning you'll need to "file" through bolts on the floor that aren't as easy to view as the ones on the shelves.

And just as happy when they announced they'd found a new space and were planning to reopen. I have to say, having visited there a few times now, I'm pretty disappointed. The new space is still downtown, but a few blocks west of their previous location. Where parking was free at that spot, it's metered at this one. When I think of all the vacant retail spaces in town, many with parking lots or at least free street parking, it leaves me perplexed. And the new space itself is so incredibly small and disjointed. It's separated into multiple, small rooms. Their inventory is but a shadow of its former self. And the prices have gone up. Wayyyy up. Perhaps most perplexing is the complete lack of classroom space, which they'd gone to so much trouble to add in their own space. Combined all of this with semi-surly, N95'd employees and well... to put it simply...I don't see the appeal in returning here anytime soon. For now, I miss the old Ragfinery and hope they turn things around.

Bobi is such a lovely lady. One time years ago, she tried to discourage me from "spending so much money" but I had found so many wonderful out of print fabrics as well as some gorgeous Japanese florals, so I was happy to spend. The selection of fabric is a little lacking for me and while they have the biggest selection of…read moresashiko items I've seen, it's very expensive. The whole store is pretty expensive really. Also, the front desk doubles as the fabric cutting station, so that can jam things up. There was one woman in front of me and she was already part way through her transaction when I got in line. It took 20 minutes for them to finish. It didn't appear to be an issue of anything other than that there was fabric to cut and the two were chatting. However, quite frankly, were it not for the fact that I drove a hour to this store specifically for the sashiko items, I would have left. By the time they were done, five more people were in line. I don't think they were used to that level of traffic, so I didn't want to put lower than three stars, especially since I accidentally left my card there and the staff emailed me and got it back to me. The staff are really very nice, I just think they aren't used to more than a few customers at a time. That being said, I'm not in a rush to get back here because my overall experience was poor. I guess the best way to put this is, look at the 3 stars as this place has potential. Hopefully they can learn to juggle customers better. Because they have some unique offerings. I think if they can widen their selection of fabric and work on getting through customers faster during high traffic times, they could really be a delightful store.

Oh my goodness goodness gracious! This place is truly a quilter's paradise. I had never even heard…read moreof it before, but was passing through Snohomish recently and, of course, my car swerved into their parking lot as soon as I passed by. Downstairs, the place is about half fabric and half classrooms of various sizes. The fabric area is mainly quilting cottons, with a decent selection of patterns, and a recently-updated yarn area for the knitting and crochet crowd. They carry most of the main fabric designers for quilting, as well as batiks, holiday prints, and tons of solids and mixers. Accessories include any ruler, tool, or notion you could possibly need for quilting; plus they have sewing-inspired gifts, too. Upstairs, there are more classrooms (including a pay by the hour longarm rental room) and a large Bernina showroom. This area also has more patterns, as well as bagmaking supplies. The supply selection here is pretty good - lots of zippers, d-rings, etc. However, as with most things bagmaking, there just didn't seem to be enough stuff to satisfy my cravings for things like printed vinyl, waterproof canvas, rainbow zippers, etc. The sad truth for bagmakers is that it's hard to find a local option to shop these things; I end up buying most of my supplies online or at the Sew Expo. That being said, if you're a beginning bagmaker I'm sure you would find their supplies more than adequate. The staff I encountered were friendly and helpful, too - I was a little nervous about this after reading previous reviews, but I had no issues with service. I ended up buying a quilt pattern book and a really cool fabric-focused wall calendar that I can't wait to start using in January. I'll definitely be coming back here, and I hope to take a class or two in 2025.

Who knew Seattle had such amazing little fabric shops tucked away in its neighborhoods?? Not me --…read moreI have sadly been relying on places like etsy for my fashion fabrics for wayyy too long. No longer! I dropped in two weeks ago and was floored by the selection of silks, linens, shirting cottons, wools, and knits. Are you looking for a Calvin Klein wool? Silk duponi? French cotton? Italian shirting cotton? She has it. If you're looking for a sequined knit, a sheer crepe de chine, a lightweight wool crepe... she also has it. Frankly I'm amazed at the size and quality of her selection, especially for the small size of the storefront. The owner has all the long 60" rolls of silk and linen up against one wall, which makes for a beautiful display and shopping experience. You can get a sense of the scale of the pattern as well as the weight, and drape of the fabric without ever having to make a scene unrolling and clumsily holding up a bolt of fabric. I found a beautiful silk that was patterned with the NY city skyline, and have been dreaming of it ever since. My first visit, I found a beautiful patterned french cotton remnant that I sewed into a beautiful apron for my cousin...unlike most quilting cottons, it's the kind of patterned cotton that doesn't have a discernible repeat, and it has thrilled each and every one of my friends who has come over and seen it on my sewing table. My next visit I brought a friend, and she found a beautiful textured black nettle fabric from Nepal that will make an amazing statement skirt -- it has a subtle gold sheen to it and looks just like something you'd find at Anthropologie. Even better, it was only $8/yard. That's right, in addition to stocking high end $40/yd fabrics, the shop has a lot of amazing options for those on a budget, too. The owner has even thoughtfully packaged "made boxes" where you can buy a prepacked box of fabric and notions that you will need to take one of the beginner classes at Made. What a great way to introduce someone to sewing -- now they don't need to worry about picking the wrong fabric type or yardage for their project! Additionally, the owner is super thoughtful. I found a snakeskin print that I liked that I thought might work for a Halloween costume, if it came in green. The owner called the manufacturer for me, determined that it didn't, and remembered to tell me so on my next visit in. She even offered to keep an eye open for me on her next trip to the LA fashion district. Ladies and gentlemen, you CANNOT beat that service!
