Worst rental car experience ever. They tried to charge us $1,500 for a small scratch to the car …read more.. two weeks after our rental return, we were sent a demand notice for the money along with a small, blurry photo of a scratch no more than 3/4 inch long. We ignored it because we looked over the car when we dropped it off with the agent and there were no new scratches on the car that weren't there before. There were plenty of small scratches and dings on the car when we picked it up. Do your research on travel forums. Lots of posters from the US are charged preposterous amounts for small paint 'damage' weeks after returning home. The demand notices kept coming and they said that they would put a lean on our credit history if we didn't pay them. We kept trying to call Sixt ... the US office said we had to call the European office. Emails were exchanged and they would only write back to us in German. It seemed we were getting nowhere in being able to contact someone. Finally, we had a relative who is a lawyer step in and draft a response for us. The next day, Sixt wrote us to say they were waiving the charge. We did not buy their insurance because it was and extra $40/day and our credit card company has rental insurance. It was pretty clear based on a lot of the comments I am reading online that if you are from the US renting at Sixt in Europe and waive their insurance, there's a good chance they'll claim you owe hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a small ding or a small scratch. Beyond that, the car they gave us had the coolant light come on after 3 days. We called their customer service and they were able to give us little help or advice. Luckily, I speak a little French and we were able to find someone in the town we were staying in who could assist us in finding the correct coolant to add. There were 4 different colors of coolant and the manual was unclear which to use. It was stated damage could occur if the wrong one was used. The people at the rental counter were not very helpful at all and gave us a giant gas-guzzling SUV from a brand we had never heard of even though we rented a sedan, which was supposed to include brands like Mercedes or BMW. We told them that we would be driving many miles but they said it was either that or a very basic downgraded car. Overall, we would never recommend renting from Sixt ... nothing but problems and in my opinion, they tried to scam us into paying $1,500 for a very minor scratch which we believe was not caused by us. Do your homework and read their complaint site posts before using them.

If I could give it zero stars, I would. Save yourself the hassle of dealing with their unfair…read morebusiness practices and take your business elsewhere. They want to charge us more than $300 for a small scratch on one of the rims which they claim was a "damage" that occurred during our rental period but that can only be described as ordinary wear and tear. When you pick up the car, they leave it up to you to do an inspection and to report any "damages" to them. Which means you have to figure out whether or not any particular scratch/dent should be put on the list. They also don't tell you what they mean by "damages". Probably for a good reason so they can get you later. When you return the vehicle, it's no longer up to you to do the report, but it is a company representative who inspects the car and all the sudden discovers all the "damages" that allegedly occurred during the rental period. They then send you a repair bill that shows a random (and probably inflated) price to fix the "damages". After doing some research on the issue, it appears that this is a common practice and we're not the only customers that are victims of their scheme. I would urge you to read all the reviews before you rent a car from Sixt. I personally will never rent a car from them ever again. It is not worth the hassle and I've already spent too much valuable time arguing with them over what can only be described as a scheme to extract additional money from customers (in particular those who don't buy the insurance they are offering for $40 per day). As others have said, do your homework and pay particular attention to their complaint site posts before using them.

Avoid! Why? I have never been so insulted in many years…read more This is how: First i get the rentalcar, and everything is ok, but then i experience a sudden and massive shaking when retardating on the highway, and want to tell the agency about it the next day. What happens? Well, first of all they do not have ANY parkinglot for their cars, so YOU have to park it on a public by-the-road lot and if they are occipied they say, YOU have to go and drive it closer if they will have a look at it. So the customer is the one responsible for having the rented car nearby their doors. (less than 40 meters) Not very nice when there is no free spot, and have to park it 100 meters up the road, and you have waited for 20-25 minutes listening to 2 cellphone conversations and the guy in front of you in line, and then when its your turn to get service, you are told to get out and drive the car closer, because they can not move 100 meters to have a look at it! Getting back again you have to wait for you r turn again(inc. cellphones/phones etc) Embarrasment number 2! And then when you say you want it for the agreed amount another day, the colleague shakes his head, and wiggles his eyes (just to say you are a moron) in stead of asking the original colleague whom i first rented it from, if the prize i said was correct. Very embarrassing thing number 3! Then when i tell them what is wrong, that the wheels must be unballanced or worse, then say the will look at it when i return the car....! Of course i did not dare to take it to the highway anymore, and that was my fourt and final ebmarrasment with this ADA in Cagnes Sur Mer. Never them again! BUT the only lady who worked there was actually quite nice and friendly. Not any of the 3 men i spoke to. So, i experienced a lot of french people that where 100% service minded om my trip, but thoas men in ADA @ Cagnes Sur Mer would need a litle cheering up and the whole place should move to another location WITH their own parkinglots nearby. That is essential for a rental-car business. (ps: sorry about my bad english guys..!)

Europcar - The "damage" they are charging me for is a tiny scratch less than one inch long. 100% scam.

Europecar had competitive rates and many of the agencies do try to tack on extraneous fees. Of course you have to be vigilant and ask questions, which is tough when you've just been on an international flight. I also needed a GPS for navigation which was an additional cost of 15 euros per day. I'd recommend buying one or if you have a phone with a local SIM card and enough data then of course you won't need a GPS unit. Our Fiat took us all the way to Meribel Mottarette for an Alpine half marathon running race and back. Be prepared to spend a ton on tolls though. In France there are toll many many toll gates where as in Italy you typically pick up a ticket at one end and pay when you get off the highway or at your final destination. Apparently in Switzerland you'll pay one fee and then no tolls for one year and you are allowed to travel within the country wherever you like. The convenience and flexibility of having a car is one of the many reasons we chose to rent one. If you have time on your side and can plan ahead it is much more economical to use public transit.

Despite the minimal nature of the mark and our protests during check in, Europcar charged us a significant fee. Many other rental companies, such as National and Budget, allow for minor wear and tear, but Europcar chose not to. Because of this, we do not recommend Europcar and will not be giving them our business again.
